GM: Posh
Players: Blackheart, Miyo, Pooka, Posh
Synopsis: Posh’s contact Trevor Chang asks her to arrange a team to quickly track down a ritually-linked wu jen important towards maintaining the ley lines. Apparently he’d been tracked down by two Black Chrysanthemum outsiders as part of a spillover from the conflict in Hong Kong, to weaken Red Dragon operations in the area, and to provide information on security weaknesses. He asks for Posh to arrange a retrieval – but it turned out that the thing that managed to ambush a wu jen and separate him from his elemental spirit guardians was – another wu jen, with a powerful bodyguard and a ferocious shen on command! They managed to sneak into the house where the target was being held, giving them the advantage as they engaged in a quick and nasty fight after tampering with the ward in the house.

Trevor Chang is a man who's all about balance sheets. He's worried about the balance sheet of his body fat percentage, though he's comforted by the recent dad bod trend, back in fashion again, right? Idly toying with his old lacrosse stick, he considers the elf who's been a bit of a problem solver for him. And so he has a Shining Mountain decker arrange a secure call to Posh.
"Yo yo, Poshie honey," he drawls, in his affected Dartmouth accent. "What is uuuup? Look, I've had a guy ghost on me," he says. "The finger wagglers tell me that they were able to track him to a location that's been used as a foreign rented Black Chrysanthemum stronghold, temporarily of course, in this spillover from the Hong Kong conflict you're dealing with. They're mainly trying to hit at our revenue streams, and, well, the loss of this guy, who helped manage the ley lines properly and prevent spiritual poisoning of many of our talismonger businesses. Anyway. They tell me he's a wu jen, and they've got a location. If you've got someone who can take over the link and track 'im down and bring him back…" He shakes her head. "We've got his parents, and his wife," he says, sending an info pack on Mr. Yi Karwai, apparently one of many Shining Mountain wu jen. "So we really think he's likely to have been…taken against his will. That doesn't mean he'll be of sound mind if you confront him. Return him to us, alive, and I'll arrange for a hundred grand for you and your team. He knows too much about how we work to let our enemies turn him with magic, twist his mind and allow him to spill the secrets of our society. Let's say that…Mr. Yi has consulted on the securing of some very important buildings. It is only a matter of time before they are able to break his will in some manner."
His early casualness an obvious attempt to cover the seriousness of the situation, Posh nods.
"I see, Trevor," she says. "But, as you know, it's been very good for me to be high on your list of names when you run into difficulties such as this and need some short notice assistance. And I understand not wishing to reveal any weakness in Shining Mountain operations before the true masters of the society," she says. "So, shall we call this one eighty thousand?"
"You're too good to me, baby. If you are able to work without a dossier on this one, just an image and the location we've got him traced to, that would be perfect. I'd hate to have to…call in the big guns on this."
So Posh realizes that she's got together who she can, fast. She first attemps to connect with those involved at her clinic - Blackheart and Miyo, who both had been working on a plan with her, consulting on whether they could assist on a surgery to reinstall her kevlar bone lacing eventually. She heads over into the clinic and informs them both. Most of her other calls are unanswered - and then she takes a gable and asks Trevor to send a message to a young shaman she'd heard about from Luck - one who goes by Pooka, and had shared her number. So she fires off a message for her.
Got a job for you. Will be by in my van. Got your number from a very Lucky friend - interested?" She desperately hopes that will be more intriguing and profitable than utterly creepy.
"What, we're not the big guns?" Blackheart seems hurt by the thought, wounded, even! "What's the address? I haven't ruined a BC's day in ages, it feels like," she says, eager to get going as she gathers her usual things for a run.
Posh nods. "Well," she says. "They don't really have turf here in Denver, see? One outfit of them rented out that distribution building, but that's lapsed because we hit it too hard. There's no real Black C operation here - it's all spillover and mercenary - hired attacks on Red Dragon assets here, to try to weaken them back home," she explains.
"Ah," Blackheart nods her head as she slips into her form-fitting fullsuit. "Sounds complicated. What's the address of this extraction?" she asks, zipping up and buckling in her harness for ammunition and her submachineguns. With her overcoat over top to conceal them, she throws on her mirror shades and smiles, "I'm ready. We're picking up your new contact on the way, right?"
Pooka says "Yea sure, I could always use the work and it keeps me off the street." She grins but well the phone does not convey that, al;though her tone does as she says "I can be ready in a few.""
Once Miyo has gotten dressed up and ready to go, she meets up with the others and looks Blackheart over. "Hmm.. Nice." She checks her equipment quickly and nods. "So…" She begins as she accepts the gadget from Posh. "It sounds like we're going to be dealing with something pretty tough. If it took down a skilled Wu Shen, probably another magic user. We'll need to be careful."
Posh nods as she moves to make sure that Miyo's set up with her SMG and exex rounds as well, and that she's got her injector gun with plenty of trauma patch chems to help preserve any survivors. "All right," she says, uploading her own network and plugging into her datajack, the location provided on Trevor, as well as the image of Mr. Yi. It reveals that Mr. Yi is being held in a location in the CAS district, just outside of areas nominally controlled by the 88s, apparently in the basement level of an apartment building. She gives one of her extra personal units to Miyo, which helps show her the target location, and a microwave link, which she also connects to hers. "So. Just don't get out of sight of me," she says. "I think that we can surmise that whatever managed to capture a powerful wu jen must be somewhat magically active, of some sort. That's why I'm getting as much magical support as possible. Let's get going," she says. "Time's running out."
She spends a few minutes on the way, preparing the instantaneous HUD that she and Blackheart share, setting up a display on her master unit that can get piped through her microwave link to those, and the personal units, she plans to loan Miyo and Pooka.
With such a setup, she's ready to give a grin and a friendly wave, perhaps looking quite a bit different than most who pull up in vans on Pooka, if that happens frequently, and inviting her into the plush interior, shoving this strange piece of tech. "All right," she says. "That includes the map to a target that we need to retrieve," she says. "We're linked onto there by a ritual link - perhaps they failed to find him and break him, or perhaps they think they can drain his mind of knowledge before we respond," she says, with a frown. "All right. We'd best be prepared," she says.
The area where the target's being held, according to Posh's mapsoft, is a residential park. Street upon street of redeveloped town houses…panicbuttons on every corner. The modern white collar farm, a grotesque pretense of the American Dream. A-level security - that calls for stealth and quiet weapons. However, she's got her armguns, Miyo and Blackheart have XSGs, and she reasons spells available for Pooka.

"Nice neighbourhood," Blackheart observes, watching the picket fences and cloned houses pass by. "Oh wow, a poodle, I didn't think they had those anymore," she adds as they pass by someone walking their dog. She keeps her eyes peeled on the Astral Plane, looking for whatever spirits might be keeping watch on the apartment they're to sneak into.
«Plot» Posh says, "Wu Jen are known for summoning spirits of man and spirits of the elements. They cannot summon or control elementals. They cannot have totems and such. So whatever dealt with the Wu Jen must have ambushed him and banished his spirits, somehow, or prevented him from summoning them: that means either fast ambush, or powerful anti-spirit abilities and much magic access."
Posh sees little other than the basic security presence. The townhouses have roof access to a little deck, they've also got a front door and back door. Based on the other side of the street, the back door has a camera, both sides are protected by a standard residential maglock, likely R4.

Assensing, Blackheart is able to see that there is a standard perimeter ward on the building itself - perhaps not unexpected when it's known that the magic user is held at home. There's a black SUV in the driveway of the home itself, and with the unobtrusive Luna, it's clear that whatever's happening in that house is using the cover of the middle class residential park as its primary defense from the outside.
"Looks like wards all over the building," Blackheart observes, "I don't see any watcher spirits. I suggest we try for the roof top patio. Two up there, with the others watching the front and back door." She thinks, "If we can't keep things quiet, then kick in the doors." She glances to the rest of the crew, "Or do you think we should all go for the roof?"
Pooka says "I could transform and fly up there, but it would leave me without a gun ar body armor I am afraid."
"I'm not sure I'd be able to kick the doors in, but if we were going full pynk hawx we could probably blast them down with our SMGs, come to think of it," Posh says with a bit of a frown. "OF course, that'd probably attract attention. But I think Miyo is correct," she says.
The wards seem to be the standard alarm wards, set to detect the presence of any active spell signature that passes through them.

Pooka says "Well I could change into something allot stronger and pull the door open?"
"If you're able to disrupt wards on the down low, I think that'd be our best course of action. We'll cover you," Blackheart suggests, nodding her head. She grins to Pooka, "Are you able to transform others?" she wonders. "A sudden bear attack could be interesting."
Pooka grins to Blackheart and says "I can actualy."
"There is a good chance that I can disable the ward long enough for the rest of you to pass through. I may or may not be able to pass through. It depends on how well the ward is functioning." Miyo adds with a tiny shrug. "If it just senses active magic or something, which is common, then if anyone uses magic, they just have to go through and I'll come through clean after."
"Well, as Blackheart mentioned, it's a ward on the inside of the building. So if we're relatively stealthy, we can get up there as needed," she says. "Let's hope nothing notices as you…spell us up there. The problem is, this is just the time when people are coming home. We'd take a real risk of getting spotted up there." She thinks a bit. "Pooka, could you maybe sneak inside the roof as some kind of animal, while Miyo disables the ward for you, and turn off the cameras? Then Blackheart and I will bust in through the back door." She nods. "It'll be risky if you two get caught, but if you don't, then…that'll probably give Blackheart and I a big edge, and then you two can rush down and play clean-up."
"That would be awesome, Miyo," Blackheart smiles. "If you want to keep your gear, I can levitate you up to the roof, might be a bit more slow than flying as a bird," she says as she listens to Posh's plan. "Works for me, if we can blow the lock and get in before anyone knows what's up, we coudl probably catch them with their pants down."
Posh nods to Blackheart. "I can loan my ruthi cloak to Pooka, actually," she says, wriggling out of it. "That way you don't have to use invisibility to get up there. They can move slow enough to not interfere with the ruth operation," she says. "We'll be able to probably sneak around back without too much trouble - I could probably talk us out if something if we get challenged.
Posh glances around. "Or do you want to risk us all going to the roof and then going in from the top, as Miyo said? It's not a bad alternative, and it does keep us all together."
Miyo fidgets a bit. "I just hope they actually have their pants on… and stuff. I don't need to see all that right now." She adds with a giggle.
Pooka says "Well I can stuff my gear into my bag and fly up there carring the bag and put my stuff back on. I mean armor and gun, thats about all I need."
Pooka seems to give it some thought. "Yea I mean I have like a jacket, a pistol and sunglasses, every thing else I can Conjure.
Posh nods. "All right," she says. "Let's do this, then. We're going with Miyo's plan," she says. "Let's park as if we were looking around, and then just sneak into the back alley, smooth as possible. We'll have to pass three cameras before getting to the back, but then we should be able to get to the roof relatively safely," she says. "It'd be great if you could start that now, Pooka, except don't carry the bag. Just be a bird or something, I suppose. You can land up there and see if there are any sorts of motion sensors."
Pooka says "Well I do have the ability to cast illusions that fool cameras also."
Blackheart nods her head. "I can keep us invisible if we keep close together, about two meters or so, so maybe we should hold hands on our approach. That should take care of the camera problem. Once under cover, we can get to work picking the lock while Pooka scouts."
Miyo scooches over next to Blackheart. "Well, I like that idea!" She takes a hold of Blackheart's hand. "Hehehe…"
"Well, all right, then," says Posh with a chuckle, grinning as she places one of her hands on Blackhear's shoulder. "I suppose I'll be at the back maglock, so let's play 'follow the leader. And then Miyo can hold the ward down while we three cross, under cover of ruth?" she asks. "Well, maybe that might be the simplest, if that works. You three know better than I - I'm as awakened as a hibernating bear."

Blackheart smiles and gives Miyo's hand a reassuring squeeze as she concentrates on her mirror shades for a moment, making her, Posh and Miyo shimmer a moment before fading almost completely invisible, only the most perceptive of people would notice them. «OOkay, let's get sneakin!» she says into her subvocal mic.
"Be sneaky like a fox!" Miyo whispers and then follows along with Blackheart.
Posh is all networked up at Blackheart, and so Blackheart can see the suggested route, including even separated, timed foosteps so that the group can stay together easily and duckwalk over towards the bakc door, under cover of magic and ruth.

Blackheart's invisibility spell is too much for the rather alert guy in the security room for the complex off-site, who watches the cameras. As a result, the group is able to proceed up the back passageway out of sight. Presented there is the door with a cardreader, under the camera above the door, presumably controlled by the home's separate security:

Miyo scoots along nice and quiet. There's not much for her to do, but she gives Blackheart's hand a little squeeze. She doesn't want to get left behind!

Posh carefully begins to work on the maglock under protection of the spell, using teeny, covered bursts from her tool laser on the bottom to create an area she can cut out, and then insert the spike from her fingertip-based minitool interface into the circuit, trying to get a good signal.
With a soft click, the maglock releases.
The door opens, reavealing a hallway - and the excited commentary of Combat Biker: Hong Kong.

Miyo manages to temporarily 'push' aside the ward, and the team is able to slip into the hallway, but that seems to create shouts of alarm inside, muffled from the outside as the door closes behind her once everyone's in.
Clearly alarmed, there's the sight of a tough looking man, who appears, closely followed by a spirit looking like an Eastern dragon the size of a troll, who hisses and seems ready to immediately dive to the assault. There's already a man standing up from the couch, a tough guy it seems, picking up a suppressed Beretta SMG already. No doubt that spirit already has his eyes on the ball…but the gang'd been able to get quite a ways in without alerting security.

«Plot» Posh says, "Blackheart, you're up! You can't react to any of the enemies specifically, but you could like…cast a defense spell or something, because you had an idea they'd be alerted by the ward."
Blackheart is much faster than the rest of the goons in the room, but can't quite get a good look at any of them, so she dives into a nearby doorway and gets into cover so none of them can cast spells at her or fill her full of lead!
The dragon rears back and immediately focuses on the weakest most tender target it can see: the strong, powerful aura of the magic flooding through Miyo, the fox gal. A breath of brutal flames sprays towards the fox's tasty aura!

Posh certainly learned from her last fight to geek the mage, as a the White Tiger’s had managed to take her out with a deadly manabolt. She figures that there isn't much cover to be found, so she just breaks into a sprint, trying to ziz zag as best as she can, focusing a close-ranged burst against the opposing mage as best as she can.

After surviving a torrent of fire coming her direction and maybe being lightly singed, Miyo throws up an armored spell on Posh to keep her safe.
Posh looks badly slowed but there's a grateful (if pained) look sent back to Miyo, as she drips blood on the ground, lurching a little bit. Still, she assaulted the mage brutally, but the way the dragon's turning on her, it doesn't look like she has super long!

The enraged dragon is not quite so easily tamed! Instead, as Blackheart attempts to banish it, the dragon turns away from Posh, who has mortally wounded its master, and onto Blackheart, who now represents an existential threat!
Blackheart dives for cover just as the dragon breathes it's terrifying flame down the hallway, incinerating her friends. "Holy shit!" she gasps, she's never seen a real dragon before, even if it is just a spirit of one—maybe that's even worse? Leaning out from the doorway, she tries to dismiss it "Begone, foul beast!" she shouts out, doing her best to banish the demon. Unfortunately, the dragon is a superior foe and it's power diminishes the mulleted mage's magesty!

They say you should never mess with a dragon, well, Blackheart's learning the hard way, why. "I… Said…. BEGONE!" She cries out, time is of the essence, there's been a lot of shooting, and a lot of people getting killed, in a quiet neighbourhood like this, it's likely that soemone's already called the swat team. Once again, the dragon overpowers her adn she falls back against the wall. "Fuck it," she says, drawing her submachineguns. "Have to do this the hard way!"

For her part, rather dragging her feet, in pain, Posh approaches the bodyguard with the submachine gun. She's just half a beat quicker than him, her EXEX rounds thudding heavily, brutally into his well-armored form, leaving smoke wisping out of her elbows and him bleeding on the ground.

Blackheart draws a bead on the dragon and fires her twin XSGs. Her bullets seem to do nothing, "Oh no… oh no, we're fucked!" she gasps as the dragon is proof against her submachineguns. "Miyo, Pook! Try banishing it, if we all team up we might be able to take it out!"

The dragon roars with rage as it manages to fight off the different assaults by the mages around it. "Weak mages," it laughs. "I will devour your weak souls," he says.
Posh, gritting her teeth, breaks out from behind her couch to charge at the shen, in her badly wounded state fearing she won't be much of a match for it - but she figures it's wounded as well…

Posh, bleeding terribly from several bad wounds, gasps in pain as she manages to hold on, but as she assaults the spirit, assisted from the attack spells and damaging wounds of the others, the flames singing her skin but instead causing her pain rather than damage, thanks to the trauma damper. She bashes the spirit back in the face, doing little damage, but still surprising and enraging it.

With her morale at an all time low, having never seen anything stand up to her twin machienguns, Blackheart cries out with a psionic blast. The effort leaves her on her knees, her nose bleeding and head dizzy, but it looks like it was effective at the very least. "Come on, let's get our client out of here!" she gasps, glancing back to the door, hoping Lone Star isn't already on the way.
Blackheart's managolt catches the shen finally in the chest, its surprise showing as it then disappears, fading quickly, leaving Posh to quickly inject trauma chemicals in the two mortally wounded folks. It'll likely be weeks upon weeks before they're even conscious, with the level of wounds they had.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yi is in the basement, nearly dead, and tied to a chair. He's led, most gratefully indeed, back to the van, less than a minute after the group had even entered the house.
Of course, that doesn't mean that there isn't time to pick up these things. Now, with only an assault to investigate, no deaths, and stonewalling victims, well…it's back home, for some serious rest and recuperation.
After the old man is dropped off, and it's on the way to a clinic, there's a beep. Posh, badly wounded still, connects Trevor up, giving him a tired smile as he shows himself on screen.
"Nice job, chaa," he says. "I'll be forwarding the information. It'll be a while before Mr. Yi's back to work, but he's safe with his family, and he says you were fast enough that he didn't end up giving up anything. Looks like it didn't go all to plan, but null sheen. Catch you all on the flip side."
