Synopsis: Kellogg gets his matrix-mentor Katral to look into a run he did recently that made the news.

«Plot» Hazard says, "Log started."

Kellogg, having finished up a sudden run, was curious about what was going on. News about a Politician being hit.. someone HE shot it seems, had him curious. Using that contact he had with Katral, he'd text the other decker. «Hoi. I was wonderin if ya were willin ta help me go 'trix divin. I wanna check on this politician and what data the media got from him, wiz?»

«Plot» Hazard says, "This is a powerplot. If you try to deck Mitsuhama with the worst deck in the world, jacked in from your local coffeeshop, and you just sit around while you get traced and have Red Samurai sicced on you, there will be consequences. Got it?"

«Plot» Katral says, "Got it."

«Plot» Hazard says, "This is also a nonstandard sorta thing. Kellogg and Katral, you guys decide what you're doing and I'll handle the world around you. No Jay or all that."

"Aye, aye." the decker responds, yawning lightly as he picks up his commlink. "Got any particular targets ya think might have the info or do you just want a regular scan?" The decker had been taking a nap, as he is known to do, but was seemingly quite keen on more work at the moment. Maybe because he's quite poor after the last few days.

«Plot» Kellogg says, "I also concent. heh."

Kellogg nods to Katral. "Yeah. UCAS Politician. Welborn, wiz? Seems he's allergic to nacrojet. Who knew?" Shrugging slightly, Kellogg shakes his head. "Anyways. he had a briefcase. It was dropped with a media team.. I'm wantin ta know what they wanted to know.. And I know ya were willin ta help me do such a dive.. This ain't megacorp, but it's somethin, eh?"

Katral shrugs, which wouldn't be heard over the comms. "I'm fine with whatever man, long as I don't end up on the list of people being shot at… for too long, anyway. I'll just give it a lookover in the usual places, but if you get any harder leads, lemme know. Oh, and uuuh, got anyplace I can set my satlink up?"

Kellogg grunts. "Yeah chummer. I'll drive us ta the edge of town and the highway, wiz? I can actually do that witcha too. Ifn ya dun mind me hookin in ta get the uplink? I ain't gonna want to slow ya down or nothin.. but I do need ta learn.."

Katral says "I'd rather you spent time watching over my hoop while I'm in there, man. Just gimme a time and place, I'll bring my stuff and you can drive me on up to wherever."

Katral starts gathering his stuff up, being his cyberdeck, his sunglasses and his regular legal-like armor. No guns though, being that he might run into people asking him about it.

"A'right. That works." Kellogg would muse, then give Katral a generally public area and a half hour to get prepped. For himself, he'd clock out at the DC, get in his Ford and drive over to get the decker.

«OOC» Katral says, "I'm in the CAS at the moment, cottonwood"

Katral gets himself out of his apartment, stalking away on foot towards where he needs to be with his gear in his sportsbag. He actually looks a lot more athletic these days, so it doesn't look QUITE as out of place on the pasty decker!

Kellogg treats it as normal. Pass the boarder and to the spot that he gave Katral for pickup. Pulling up at the curb, the door would pop open on it's own. Dwarf jacked in with a hand planted on the center control, his voice came from the speakers. "Ya can put yer gear in the backseat, then hop in, wiz?"

Katral does as he's told, because he's a true follower. He trusts the guy not to just rush off with his deck and commlink etc, sitting down besides Kellogg. "Lead the way, champ!"

«Plot» Kellogg says, "Kelloggs going to get them into the Warrens and from there out to the edge so they're not going to be harassed. Also, clear skyline for ease of satilite use."

«Plot» Hazard says, "Sure thing. There are holes in the wall around the Warrens all over the place, and you're in the CAS sector so it's just a matter of time to get where you're going."

Katral mostly sleeps during the trip, trusting in Kelloggs driving skills after all.

Kellogg grumbles. Typical Warren traffic. That of being shot at and stuff. There's a reason he has armor on his Ford, afterall. Either way, they'd get to the spot he knows and he'd park there, finally jacking out with a nod to Katral. "A'right chummer. Yer parta the show. I'll keep overwatch, wiz?"

Katral wakes up shortly afterwards as he's spoken to, yawning again. "Sure thang man. " He doesn't even bother asking where they are, just setting up the satlink atop the vehicle, then settling himself inside of it once he's done. He aims it towards the Angel Satcom, trying his best to get a good link.

Katral sets things up expertly, having done all this maaany a time before, after all. "Welp, ya got us a nice clean spot." he says, just as he hooks up his datajack with the cord to his deck. "Just keep my hoop out of the fire and make sure nothin' bothers me while I'm in. And stay safe, neh?"

Kellogg nods and offers a fist bump to Katral. Then he'd check his Ares and keep on alert, letting the man does what he does oh so good.

Having found his quarry, The Gryphon decides… well, why bother waiting? He dives forwards, straight towards the adress of the Office, ready to bust through the windows.

That's an apt action, as it turns out, because the host's metaphor is an actual office building. Outgoing news takes the form of actual newspaper bundles, airlifted out by drones. Incoming data looks like letters to the editor. The various daily processes necessary to keep a host going and that the business utilize take the form of minions in cubicles, janitors pushing mops, and a cigar-smoking editor that looks straight out of a pre-awakening superhero comic. The Golden Gryphon easily logs in, and the broken window reassembles itself behind him.

Katral is suddenly hit with much angst of the existing kind, stuck in an Actual Office Space. The place he now dreads to return to, for he once lived that type of life, or came close to anyway. Still, that's not important right now, as he looks about the place and hums. "Might as well make myself boss around here." He looks about again, this time for a bit of paper to fold into a crown, settling it on his golden gryphon head.

Katral shrugs at the defenses he finds. Rather standard, for an official government host. Still, the tougher stuff's probably just a dance away, so he looks through the official papers to see if he can find any reference to where he needs to go next.

Looks like a briefcase was dropped off recently that sparked quite a fuss. Belonged to some UCAS politician, Lawrence Welborn, who was hospitalized that same day. Knight Errant has been trying to intimidate Free Press into turning over the briefcase and everything inside without looking at it, but cross-sector crimes are a bit of a legal landmine. Free Press has already turned over the briefcase and the original documents, but they've got copies of everything in their datastore and are working up a big story right now.

Katral trips over towards where he needs to be, trying his best to sneak across the wires, copying machines and crazy old terminals lining the officespace.

The datastore's metaphor is a bit more serious (and lively) than the main office host. You've got your traditional 1960's looking reporters mashing away at cubicles, clerks filing and retrieving data from intimidating metal cabinets set into the wall, and cameras on the ceiling making sure everyone is acting appropriately.

Well, why change up a winning formula? He removes his former hat, tucking it beneath a wing, whilst looking through the cabinets for something new to adorn himself with. Maybe a nice set of paperclips?

"Ouch" Is the Gryphon's response, as the clip sticks in beneath his feathery hide. He looks about, then hums again, almost about to check if this is a VM or something… then realizing these guys would never be able to afford it. With that, he starts looking for what he came for, ruffling through the stacks of secrets as he goes.

With your account, it doesn't take long at all to find the datadump from the briefcase. There's a buncha files themselves, pictures of the briefcase inside and out with some notes, and the big points the journalists will be emphasizing in their story. The Gryphon's paranoia is getting the better of him… something really does seem off, and so he consults the logs of the host, dumping them and giving them a lookover to see who has had access to these files beyond him.

Hmm? It looks like shortly before the files arrived on the system, a new security account was created.

"Someone had the same idea as me, it seems." Katral frowns internally, scratching his non-existant feathery scalp. "Lemme see if the logs note anything about this particular user that seems… off."

Well, that's definitely unusual. There's simply no logs there whatsoever. They've not been deleted, the host itself has been hacked to not keep any logs of this particular user. A fairly unique hack, but pretty obvious if someone looks at the account logs like Katral did.

"That would've taken dedication… and possibly quite a lot of time or preparation to set up." Katral muses to himself as he looks over the data and tries to draw conclusions. "Well, that's quite unfortunate… this probably means the files have been altered somehow, or at the very least copied and accessed by this unknown person." Since the host was hacked to do this particular thing, has it also been hacked to do anything else if the file is accessed? As in, report it being accessed, for instance? He decides to check

A thorough and skillful examination reveals… that there aren't any more surprises. Whoever did this didn't leave any traps or alerts for anyone looking into what they did, they just kept their own actions from being logged. Hm, given what you know about how this system was hacked, the oddness within the datadump becomes more obvious. When you were checking it out, one of the files was simply had blank lines in its log. Whatever was done to the file, you can't tell.

Katral is paranoid. VERY paranoid. All this weirdness is starting to bug the heck out of him, and he only knows of one real reason it might be thus. He's probably overreacting, even putting the mission at risk, but he must know… and so he checks: Is this place a VM or not?

Katral makes a note of that in his mind, and makes a copy of the files to his deck, just in case he needs a comparative one. Before he logs out, he checks if there's anything in particular relating to any other goings-on in the area, what with the assassination attempts and various powerplayers working in Denver.

Still, with all the crazy shit else he's done, he thinks it best to just get all this data, the dump, and a nice clipboard named Clippy all onto his deck before logging off, gracefully.
