Log: The Fourteenth Floor

GM: Posh
Players: Feather, Krieg, Imaki, Lost, Posh
Synopsis: Posh gets a notification from Les that he has a datapacket for a short notice job. What she knows is that another team failed. What she /doesn’t/ know is that an angry security shaman had killed himself, leaving his spirits…spirits that he’d been shaping in his free time, free to rampage in a building he was assigned to guard. The team had been hired to steal a datafile during the confusion, but stumble upon a story of murder and mayhem and revenge against the workplace. They take out the CCSS rigger that was part of the coverup from the company that had no idea to do, and oddly, in the long run, their theft ended up solving the company far bigger problems in liability fears and magical cleanup costs than the value of the data they stole – because the company had hired the team to begin with. Why not clean up messy loose ends and get a free stress testing of your security system?
Date: 10/5/2075

«Plot» Posh says, "I'm going to throw some challenges, partly like what you are designed for, and I want to make sure that is OK: You could be hurt or suffer loss as a result of this. I also hope to post this on the wiki. Everyone good with that?"

<Plot» Krieg says, "I hope so."

«Plot» Imaki says, "Yup"

Posh frowns a little as she considers the job that she'd taken on. An odd mix: heavily warded, heavily secured, but the security is almost all automated. At least, that's what the advance intel reveals: a packet from Les regarding a datafile located in a secure private mini-haven used by a subsidiary, as well as a payout offer: a hundred grand for a retrieval of the paydata, quick and quiet. "I think we've got something here that might be right along your lines," she says, sending quick message to the two electronic wizards she knows best: Krieg and Imaki.

"I'll try my best" Is the reply from Imaki's number. She suits herself up in her form fitting armor and gets her satchel with all her tools and deck in order as she waits for the meet location.
"I do require additional funding for a project. I will need further information to determine the potential threats." Is what gets returned to Posh, from Krieg.

The meet location is in the back of Sara's van, which has been configured with its bench seats facing the centre. Posh is at one side, with a big smile, and a tray of a half dozen assorted coffees in styrofoam cups that each of you can choose from.

"Thanks for joining me on this one," she says. "So. We have to penetrate a secure, secret facility we've been given a tipoff about," Posh says. "Intelligence provided by the client reveals that the wards at the facility have been allowed to lapse, thanks to a recent resignation and fallout over succession," She explains. "Personnel difficulties. But in any case, that gives us a chance to manipluate the security systems so that we can gain access," she says.

It seems like the facility is hidden on one level of a multilevel corporate office tower, unmarked. There's a printscanner/cardreader at the front door, should one come out of the elevator, and the first hint of the security system, a camera directly above it. "We've got no intel on the layout of the facility itself, but we know how the floor was generally configured: a large central bay with office space along the walls, room for a cubicle pool in the center, and so on. The facility seems to rely on its CCSS protection and its offline data server; otherwise, it seems based on personnel records and this installation info Les managed to recover," she says. "So. We've got the main camera systems, some difficult doors, minimal physical security, but response times in the area are likely to be fast and we'll be a dozen floors up," she says. "There is a fire escape down the outside of the building, and a service stairwell in addition to the elevator," she says. "The stairwell runs along the elevator shaft, and the fire escape is on the outside accessed through this door, across the central area of the floor and to the left, from the perspective of the doors," she says. "We have little detail on what else we might find in there, though, so we should be ready for surprises, but without wards there we should have some changes to tweak this, if I'm not mistaken," she says. "I know this is a lot more in a briefing as usual, but I suppose that's why I thought the payout was reasonable: if we had to do all this, this job would be worth /much/ more."
The asian doesn't take on the coffees, resting in the seat with her elbows on her knees and her chin resting on the bridge of her interlaced fingers. An eyebrow is arched as she listens, glancing at Krieg for a moment before looking back to Posh, "I can't do anything with a CCSS, I mean… I -could- but it would be very difficult for me to do anything and it is much more hazardous than an Orange system. It's like skydiving without a parachute."

Having arrived just after Imaki did, Krieg notes the glance before looking over the available information again. She does retreive a coffee, but just holds the cup in her hands, not seeming to drink it. "I am capable of defeating the majority of security grade CCSS systems available. Mil-spec would pose a problem due to the number of opponenet operators in the system. This appears to be a private secure protection net for an independant storage host. I will not be able to provide much support for Trix based or physical events if the system proves more difficult."

Posh nods. "Well," she says. "I suppose what we could do is get more information if you like, or, well, we can consider going there. We will need a rationale to get to the twelth floor of the building, though," she says. "See, there's a cardreader in the elevator that you'll need to create spoofed credentials for," Posh says. "That'll even get me onto the twelfth floor," She says. "Although, I suppose it would be safer if I went to a different floor, and took the stairwell," she says, thoughtfully.

Posh widens her eyes as she seems to zone out for second, nodding, a little twitch. '…Shit,' she says. "Just got another little packet of information, It seems like the mage in the personnel dispute has just killed himself," she says. "He left a suicide note saying that now his spirits will make all his bosses pay," she says. "I'm probably going to need some help in there, if I'm going to have to be fighting angry spirits while avoiding CCSS." She blanches, and then frowns. "The Johnson has approved payout for another team member based on this information. Success seems to be critical." She smiles a bit. "And I think I know who'd be ideal to help with that," she says, with a nod to Imaki. "All right," she says. "Do you want to jack from off site to start with the spoofed credentials to go to another floor? The access from the stairwell to the site might be locked, but I'm reasonably good with doors," she says, pausing a moment again, to go silent - it seems like she's mind-texting again.

----> Text Message to Feather from Posh (#11342)< ---

Hey there. Got a job with an unexpected surprise and I'd love to have you on board. Payout's a little north of thirty grand. You in?

"There are numerous methods for gaining access to the system. The majority require a datatap on site." Krieg notes as she looks to Posh. "Intrusion may be difficult until some devices have been circumvented or disabled. Unfortunately doing so must be done with extreame caution as alerting the security network is only a matter of time more." She blinks a bit and sits back, holding the coffee cup a bit higher to look over as she glances to Imaki. "If the elevator is on the Trix based hosts it will be simpler. Whatever is on the CCSS will draw immediate attention and combat if tampered with on the network itself. It would have to be disconnected and controlled manually, or the network infiltrated and defeated first."

Imaki nods to Krieg, glancing at Posh at the mention of spirits, "Hrmmm.. that makes things a bit more difficult.. that is far from my area of.. anything.." She brings her left hand up to her face and rubs at her chin a bit as she thinks, "If the elevator is on the CCSS I can manually disable it and take control, but that would require me getting access to the elevator's wiring somewhere. The first step I think would be figuring out exactly which systems are on the CCSS and which can be accessed from the Trix. If it's all split off from the Trix in general that'll mean like Krieg said, I'd need a datatap on site."
"The elevator, I'm pretty sure, is not on the CCSS," says Posh. "And is the datatap wireless? Can I install that for you?" she asks, "so you don't even have to go onsite at all?" she asks. "Or should we find some way for you two to hide out of site, but on site, say, between the elevator and the secured door?" she asks.
----> Text Message to Posh from Feather (#12973)< ---

I'm still recovering from our last operation. I will try to be of assistance, though.

Superb. I think the experience will be valuable, and we have good intel going in.

========================> Item 15 on Krieg's Backpack< ========================
Item Name: R12 Dataline Tap - Transmitter Model
Item Type: ITEM
Quantity: 1
Fractional OK: No
Clonable: No
Players Can Link: No
Created For: Krieg (#6133)
Created By: Rando (#1923)
IC Location: Carried
-----> Description for Item< ------
Spliced into a dataline, the tap will transmit a copy of any data to a distant receivereither through the Matrix or by radio signal (with a Flux Rating = DL Tap Rating / 4, rounded down). Because fiber-op lines cannot be tapped, taps can only be set in certain places; inside devices, between devices and fiber-optic cables, spliced into fiber-optic junction boxes and so on.
To avoid detection, many devices are set to conduct burst-data transmissions at irregular intervals. These devices can even record the simsense feed of a decker's Matrix run.
Deckers can use this device to create an illegal jackpoint (SR3 200).
The rating of the tap must be equal to the MPCP of the deck being used.

The asian shakes her head, "No, I don't have the proper hard or software for a wireless transmission, but like the mall job the other day, if we can get the datajack in an unconspicious location I can chill out there. Like if we could get at the junctionbox in the street or basement that connects to the building."
Posh gives a grin. "All right," she says. "If we've got a wireless datatap, how can we make it so that Nubia doesn't have to come into the building?" she asks. "Or is that tap worthless for her? Or is it good for CCSS?" she asks. "Hmm," she says. "Actually, this is giving me an idea. If you can spoof me some credentials for maintenance or inspection, so that I can operate temporarily in that foyer area in front of the camera," she says. "Then, well, I might be able to install the tap on that camera," she says. "Especially if you control the elevator and help me get there," she says. "All right, let's stop where we can meet the fourth team member and bring her up to speed," she suggests.

Posh considers the map again, provided by Les, as she asks Sara to head to a meeting place where they can meet and pick up Feather, where the van will soon be waiting when she apprives. "Hmm," she says. "The door camera is right above the door," she says. "It's likely to be a thermographic camera," she says, thinking aloud. "What if you took control of the heating system, and brought it up to my body tempoerature?" she asks of Imaki. "Then, I could just walk up to the camera and install the tap for Krieg," she says, thoughtfully.

"Physical presence insures a clean connection, but imposes issues of hostile discovery. Depending on the locations we are able to find nearbye, there are limits to the capabilities." Krieg blows across the coffee for a momment and continues her observation of Imaki. "It is also possible to send bring a hardline optic teather to the site from outide Via drone, enter the facilities service system and then attach it to a jack point within the structure." She pauses a momment with the discussin of climate. "I have done similar methods in the past, if there are other sensors systems it may not be effective. Most often thermal systems are suplementary to basic ones. Most security cameras include Thermal, low-light and tyical high resolution daylight operations layered in a flair system overlay for selective use."

Posh nods. "Well," she says. "Perhaps if I came in from the stairwell I could come in outside of the camera's line of sight?" she asks. "But of course it'll be a tougher job for Nubia to open the door access there than it would be the elevator: those are one-way doors," she says. "Our operative is particularly adept at avoiding the visual spectrum. Better even than me," she says. "What about a mix of ruthenium and the heating idea?" she asks. "And even though she is no expert, perhaps I could direct her in how to install the tap."

Feather seems to pass on the ride, instead showing up on her bike not long after she's called. Dismounting, she quietly peels off her helmet, long black hair pinned into a bun above her, her face its usual dour, impassive expression. A few bruises are still visible, likely from a past operation that went a little sour.

She parks nearby and engages the ruthenium coating of her bike, the high-powered machine fading from view. And then she makes her way to the van where the team is brainstorming. She knocks on the van's back door. "Pizza delivery," is spoken in her distinct heavily-accented, no-nonsense voice. Because this works every time. Or maybe she just has a lousy sense of humor.

The meet is in the van, so Posh opens the back door to alow Feather to join the rest of the group, with a smile. "Hope you didn’t forget the pepperoni," she says. "There seems to be a free spirit threat inside the facility we are going into, after a security shaman apparently killed himself after a personnel dispute," she says. "We need to retrieve data off a secure, separate Host," she explains. "So. Krieg's going to be offline, and it'll be Nubia, me, and Krieg, on the team. You'll have to hack the system ahead of time, Nubia," she says, "to spoof ID cards for us, and you'll also be hacking the offline host to get the paydata," she says. "Krieg, Nubia's work will allow the two of us to get direct access to the CCSS network, and once that datatap is installed, Feather and I will escort Nubia to the offline host, likely in the management office, neutralizing any threat from freed spirits," she says. "Does that all make sense to everyone?" she asks. She looks a little concerned at Feather. "Is there anything I can help with, by the way? A little nanite pick me up? Magical healing from one of my team?" she asks, concerned.

«Plot» Posh says, "34 stories. This is floor 14."

«Plot» Posh says, "The office space is rented out to different small research operations, fertility clinics, etc."

"To start with, we need to be realistic about our footprint within the facility. You have the skills to talk your way past most problems, Posh, as well as the ability to modify your appearance to varying extends, which you should do. You are the only one who can reliably infiltrate the facility with social camouflage. You also have the ability to plant a dataline tap. I can try to come with you, but I lack the required technical skills. And as a warning, my cloaking systems are not fully upgraded. They might not withstand thermographic imaging. We have a secondary option, though." She points at the map.

"Think in three dimensions. I'm capable of scaling this building. At this height, I estimate the entire operation would take no longer than two minutes. With the proper positioning, and the right cable guides, I could run a sufficiently long cable along the entirety of the building, from the 14th to the 34th floor, out of sight of those inside. And at the roof, I could set up a satellite uplink. Most buildings of this height do not have extremely sophisticated security at their summit. There will be some, but I will take care to avoid it."

"This would allow Imaki to indirectly infiltrate, without needing to be physically present. Not only would it be easier to get in, but if things go wrong, you exfiltrating alone would be far simpler. A few wildcards remain, though. The spirit. Are you sure it's present?"

Posh considers Feather's words thoughtfully. "I see," she says, considering, running through a map of the place in her mind, imagining Feather up there. "We could easily pick up some weak adhesive compound from the clinic, coat the cable in that, and stick it against the wall," she says. "The weight of the cable will make it easy to make it fall flat, but then you'll probably be able to have it end up where you want it. We'll be able to pull it away after that," she says. "What about reeling the cable in, and feeding it out, once we retrieve it, from an empty wrist grappling gun?" she asks.

She nods decisively. "All right. After we have it secure, though, well, I think I might need you in there. And I'm going to absolutely -hate- this, but…" She chuckles. "I suppose I could let you in at the very top of the stairwell, right? And then we descend through it. Since the doors are locked and alarmed they didn't bother to install cameras in there, except at the ground level escape door, so once we're in we're in," she says.

"With the small size of the area, and semi-remote access it may also be possible to simply breach and clear the security. Cut the network off from transmitting a distress signal, lock-down the building itself with a false firealarm to clear civilians form the site. These could be simpler efforts than attempting to remotely breach the main CCSS security network. Or if someone does enter the site physically with a hardline to access a maintenence jack for the CCSS I could immediately combat the security system without having to commit to an extended combat." Krieg mentions as she cools the coffee a bit more and eyes Feather as well.

"For reference, though, this kind of operation really demands more preparation. If you wish to specialize in offsite Matrix infiltration, access to other interfaces beyond satellite is invaluable," Feather suggests to Imaki. "I have no real knowledge of the Matrix, but I have participated in operations with the sole goal of installing discrete taps, for the purpose of industrial espionage. With the right hardware and skill, devices can be masked very cleverly. A discrete radio transmitter might double as a functioning data card reader, for example, and the average worker would never be the wiser. It wouldn't even require line of sight or elaborate placement of transmitters. Some interface device are hard to acquire, but theft is useful there."

To Posh, she hmmms. "You want me on hand to deal with the spirit. I really do not like the option of using the roof door, though. They're often more highly secured than one would think. And beyond that, I'd have to sneak past every security device within the facility from the roof to the target floor. Do we have alternatives? Compromising a large section of glass might be inadvisable to get window access. CCSS maintenance monitors might pick that up. The front door will be highly guarded too."

She seems to come upon an idea. "Is there a basement level with a utility elevator? Perhaps cliche, but it might be our most discrete option. They're not often used. I could call the elevator to the lowest garage floor, make my way via stair to the floor above it and force the door above it slightly, just enough to gain access to the roof of the elevator. Because of my abilities, even with my gear, I will make no sound to those within the elevator. From there, Krieg merely needs to discretely call the elevator to a floor nearby to the target floor. Lure the spirit out. I will emerge and deal with it, then use the elevator to again return to the basement, then exfiltrate. Then you exfiltrate alone while Imaki harvests the data."

Posh frowns a bit. "No, I have a solution," she says. "I can negotiate with the client that this job can be done more smoothly with a further assistant, to deal with the spirit," she says. "Then you no longer have to get in," she says. "After all, you managing the installation of the datatap is certainly enough, and you'll have to risk being spotted up there," she suggests.

Posh drafts a message to Les. "Heya pal," she says. "We're going to have to bring on another teammate for this one, a specialist to deal with a sticky spirit problem. We've managed to get a technology apparatus set up to crack the last nuts, but we'll need the extra investment to guarantee smoothness," she says.

Imaki says "If I can access the elevators from the Trix, I can handle all of that. Give me a couple hours and I can get a friend of mine to see how much of the system is accessable from the Trix."

Imaki rubs her chin again and then settles her hands in her lap, "If you want to go that route, and again if their HR department's records are accessable through the Trix I can actually forge a work order custom suite to your internal team so that the security personnel assume it is legit.

«Auto-Judge[]» Posh (#11342) rolls Negotiation vs TN 5 for "Remote negotiation, with Les +1 TN during job, -1 TN Level 2 contact. No KP allowed Predetermined result: Failure means the team splits 133k. Success means the team splits 166.":
2 2 2 4 4 4 7 = 1 Success

"Unfortunately the system is itself a body, controlling it requires you to defeat the mind that inhabits it. Much as a spirit would posses a person, we would possess the system itself. While it can be monitored, and infiltrated, to control it is a direct act of aggression upon the mind that weilds it." Krieg comments, the coffee being set back down on the small table. "Once the combat for it begins, it is victory or defeat."

Posh nods. "I see," she says. "So it is not something you can do without them knowing," she says. "Well, still, with the magic protection temporarily disrupted, this is the one opportunity, I think, we have to do this. So that's what we're doing," she says. "However, the problem is, I'm concerned about being recorded, or about any possibility of even booby traps. There's rumors that gel-armed defense gun turrets are becoming more popular inside some corporate offices, particularly where there are shenanigans. I heard Nightshayde got done up and dragged into the Star from one such setup," she says. "So if I'm going to be going live, I'd rather have you covering my flank on the security setup, than not," I suppose," she says. "That means this'll be quick and dangerous, then," she says. "And Feather, no matter what, stay out of sight, even when the alarm goes off. That'll be quite a bit harder, getting away with a satellite dish. We don't want to leave a trace," she says. "Well, at least this way, you'll be able to turn off the elevators," she says. "It'll take quite a while for security response to get up the stairs, after all."

Posh nods thoughtfully. "It'll also take extra time for an armed security response team to get up to the twelfth floor…if the elevator's out!"

«Plot» Posh says, "Posh successfully negotiated to raise payout to add an anti-spirit specialist. Lost added to plot."

"While it is difficult, if I am able to strike with enough force the network will go down immediatly, and no detection will occur. I would then be able to control the systems within, delete any recording materials, overide any security locks, and detere responding units. The extreame risks offer signifigant rewards in this case." Krieg blinks a bit again, taking a momment to smooth the pleats of her skirt.

"We could kill the elevators to slow response. And then ourselves use one of the shafts as an exfiltration route, provided the elevator therein is on the lowest garage floor. By my estimates, if we rappell down one at a time, sending the grapple back up each time, it would take us less than 30 seconds for all of us to descend from the 14th to the basement floor. From there, we might have an easier escape. Even if the building is sealed, secure garage gates have to be flexible, to be easily raised and lowered. I could breach an opening with my sword. We could then make our way onto the street and get away," Feather states matter-of-factly.

"It would be a slight modification of our plan. Lost would still deal with the spirit, but after placing the sat uplink, I'd infiltrate the elevator shaft to facilitate our getaway, then wait pending your signal, out of sight."

Imaki falls silent as she begins sending out feelers of her own throughn her implanted poc-sec, working on getting access to a satellite uplink and have an old friend of hers to take a peek at the Matrix hosted systems in the building.

«Auto-Judge[]» Imaki (#9271) has the Contact Ngai Ushi with the following information (only to Posh):
-----> Contact for Imaki (#9271)< -----
Contact Name: Ngai Ushi
Level: 2
Type: decker
GM Note: Racist +3 (Elves)

Ngai Ushi was a fellow decker in the same squad within the Yakuza academy Imaki was trained in. They became great friends being the only two girls in that batch of recruits. She was not quite as talented as Imaki was but she was decently good. An inherent distrust of magic has lead her to be a bit racist against all metahumans, but especially Elves because she was born human in a small community of Elves, and thus was hated and treated badly by them until she ran away as a teenager and found herself with the Yakuza.

Being a decker, Imaki can get ahold of Ngai easily through the Matrix without it being traced right off the bat. Mostly Ngai is used as a sort of ping, when Imaki wants to know how much the Yakuza knows about her activites and other than that just poliet conversation with an old friend. Imaki makes contact using her SIN 'Nubia Haik' since that is the best one she was able to cobble together and would be very hard for the Yakuza to break without a fully dedicated team tipped off to the fact that that SIN is Imaki herself.

« Sure, I'm up for making some money tonight. I'll be outside the building, just be ready to tell me what you need me to do when I get on board! » Lost texts back in reply to Posh. It takes her a couple moments, but she throws on a SecureTech jacket, gathers up her combat helmet and Savior kit in an unassuming duffle bag, throws on her shades, and heads down toward street level from her apartment.

Imaki receives a quick message back «Yeah, I took a look for you, chummer. The systems on the outside host are just the elevator and environmental systems, front door, that kinda stuff. Then you got subhosts for the connectivity and business work into each of the office, but every floor got its own CCSS setup. One rigger manages the whole building, and a few others, besides. It's a good way to get the nameplate of SOTA with minimal risks. Mind tipping daddy five grand for that hot packet?»

«Plot» Posh says, "Using quick rules vs Green-7 system to take control of the elevators, climate control system, and front door and building security cameras Make a Computers (Decking) test with all your hacking pool. TN 7, 2 successes required. What is your Detection Factor?"

Jeremy also directs you to a little underground synth bubble tea joint with a few jackpoints. It'll probably get you shut down next week, but it's at least physically safe for now, with good lookouts and little chance of being arrested even if you were traced to that point. It's got a secret sat uplink for its points, one that can be moved and spliced into some other stowen power source. Imaki might get jostled a little bit among the other jacked in folks and not quite decrepit mid-tier BTL-heads, but five grand to your buddy gets a good tipoff.

The van pulls up to the Woodlands, and the back doors open revealing the four runners staring at Lost, Posh with a grin. "Looks like we're kidnapping you." As Lost steps in, to sit on the benches set along the sides of the van, Posh chuckles. "This all got very complicated, but suffice to say. You're coming in with me, as anti-spirit," she says. "All right," she says. "So, in any case, back to what we do. We get inside. Lost makes me invisible, and while I'm invisible, I install the datatap in the CCSS camera outside the main door. That gives Krieg a chance to try to take down that system while I bust in the door," she says. "Then, we go in, take care of any loose spirits left by the dead shaman, and install the tap by cutting a hole in the window that Feather's taken care of, connecting that in for Nubia," she says. "She gets the paydata, we detach the connection, you reel it up," she says. "Then, Lost and I grapple down the elevator shaft," she says. "Unless you can just float us down, Lost?" she asks.

«Auto-Judge[]» Imaki (#9271) rolls Computers (Decking) + 4 vs TN 7 for "Hacking Pool 4, I'll make my list depending on if I even succeed":
2 3 3 4 4 4 5 5 7 7 10 11 = 4 Successes

«Plot» Posh says, "You get two items."

Lost flails her arms dramatically before snickering and clambering into the van, giving each of the team a smile in greeting, "How's it going, guys?" She asks, before settling into a seat and strapping in, "Ok, so I'm on spirit busting duty. I can do that." That said, she leans back and listens to the outline of the plan before nodding again to Posh, "I can float us down, but I might have to do so one at a time. Otherwise, you can rapel down and I'll just float down myself… if I have to climb up or down, you know, physically, I'll probably make a mess of it." She admits with a laugh.

Posh nods. "All right," she says. "You know, I can just use a wrist grapple gun," she says, waving bye to Imaki after she's dropped off about a block away near the mentioned underground club with the satlink. "All right. I need that datatap from you, Krieg, which I promise I will not just leave on sight," she says. "I've got my Lost, and my grapple gun," she says. "Feather," she says. "How are you going to exfil? Are you…erm…running down the building after you retrieve the gear, or are you coming down the elevator shaft with us?"

«Plot» Imaki says, "Total elevator control and a work order in the HR department that lists two females, for clearing the spirits from the dead mage's reckless move."

Posh looks extraordinarily impressed at Imaki's suggestion for an ID. "Goodness, why didn't I think of that?" she asks, with a chuckle.« Very well done»

"I thought I might assist you in rappelling down by infiltrating from the inside and preparing the shaft with a grapple gun. If you don't need such help, I can simply make my way down the building after placing the satellite transmitter, then remain on standby to cover your exit," Feather replies.

Feather adds. "If lost can reliably get you down the shaft using a levitation spell, that would be simpler and involve fewer potential complications. If she's comfortable in that role, I will limit my role to placing the transmitter."

Just before getting dropped off the blonde asian adds, "We shouldn't need to repel down the elevator shafts if I can wrestle full control of the elevators from the Host, I can just set you guys up a ride down to the bottom floor." Then Imaki waves and heads into the alleyway.
The den isn't the best place she'd ever want to end up, but it's got the sat-uplink she needs for the later show. For now however she pays the 500 nuyen cover fee and after jostling a simsense junkies out of the way plugs herself in.

While the ground crew is inroute to the location, a shadow being appears on the target building's servers and begins spreading white butterflies across the network, finding the elevator slave and bringing it under her own control. Because of her BattleTac utility she can set up a communications line with her team without having to spend extra time making comcalls, and instead spends her time writing up a fake work order and then uploading that into the HR database, having it finish downloading to the server about five minutes before the ground crew arrives on location. «Okay, elevators are mine and… work order is in progress. Upload should be finished five minutes before you hit the doors.»

"Remember to retreive the datatap before leaving, it is possible the device could be traced. if your attempts to install it are detected the system may disable that device and make the tap ineffective. Particular care must be taken to remain undetected." Krieg adds a bit more to the explanation of difficulty noting the fairly large contingent of runners who have grown into this. Needed for their particular talents, but also taking up valuable social space within the large Bubble krieg normally keeps. "I would consider device and resource costs are acceptable to split, if there was any question of it."

"I have no problem with that." Lost replies, nodding to Feather, "But, like I said, it'll be easier for me to take us up or down one at a time, and we can only move 8 meters per second. Which should be plenty, depending on how far we need to go." As Imaki mentions that she can take control of the elevator, the dark-haired elf grins at the rest of the team still in Sara's van, "Well. I guess that takes care of that problem. Still, if things change, I can always fall back on levitate if needed." That said, she switches to the commline.« Nicely done, Nubia. This'll make the infil a helluva lot easier.» Looking to Krieg, "I'm more than happy to take a slice of my cut to pay for our expenses on this one."

"If that's expedient, and you can manage the risk, very well. I'm personally not a fan of trusting elevators. Should the building's riggers wrest control again, a single elevator in motion while the others are stopped is a good indicator that something malicious is happening, as well as a hint to the whereabouts of who is responsible. And being trapped in one can be problematic. Since exfiltration is usually downward, and elevators are more reinforced from the bottom than the top, they can prove a bothersome obstacle when stopped midshaft. But I will leave that call to the rest of you. My judgment is always different, with the abilities and methods at my disposal," Feather replies. "And for reference," she adds to Lost, "at that speed, going one at a time, the two of you could be down in 15 seconds total. That might be faster than the elevator itself, depending on its speed."

Imaki pages: Now satellite uplinks are a bit tricker, because I need to Logon to the satellite, then logon to the private server the datatap is in. I have enough I/O speed to handle a satellite connection, but I lose 1d6 Init from the signal delay, 2d6 if I choose to run my ASIST cold instead of hot.

Commlink-Nubia> Imaki sends, « The elevators are a Matrix system, so it would have to be another decker that would take control of the elevators and stop them. »

"Hmm… I hadn't considered that." Lost muses as she looks to Feather, "Good catch. I suppose we can still use the elevators for the infil, but for the exfil it might be better to levitate down after all. I guess we'll have to play it by ear in the moment, but at least we have some options if, say, elevator control is lost or something else… unfavorable happens."

"To maximize our chances, where would you like to position our support forces. I will have to be within several Kilometers to ensure a strong stable connection. I would prefer to work on-site but the threat is signifigant and location not easily accessed by me." Krieg fidgets with her blazers sleeve cuffs for a momment. "The closer we are the less chance of disruption."

Posh nods to the others with her. "Allright," she says. "I think we have a plan," she says, "All right, Feather," she says, as the van pulls up now, about a block away from the target building, after making a quick pickup to get a cheap satellite dish from one of Les's dealers. She smiles, holding the datatap from Krieg. "I won't forget it," she says, nodding to Lost, all black-suited. "I suppose, let's move out, then," she says, "Krieg, I suppose you can stay with Sara," she says. "Time to head out." She nods to Feather. "Hope that running up the wall works well."

Power Name: Wall Running

Power Points: 0.75

GM Note: GEAS: Talisman: A wooden pendant on a steel chain, inscribed with the pentagram of the 5 elements of qi.

"Perhaps my suggestion is overkill, in this particular case," Feather states. "If the elevator is stopped, Posh can cut a hole in the floor using her tool laser, and then you can levitate to the bottom of the shaft."

At that point, the team is about ready to disperse to do their jobs. A quick jaunt to a local dealer supplies the team with the required length of cable, a satellite transmitter, and a few wire guides, and Feather has the strength to easily add these things to her burden on her way up. She switches out her usual gloves, exchanging her friction-resistant riding gloves for her gecko gloves, also ruthenium coated for tasks such as this one. Leaving her motorcycle parked in an out-of-the-way spot in a nearby alley, its own chameleon cloaking left engaged, she quietly makes her way to the edge of the building. She peeks a bit, through the bottom windows, trying to follow the internal walls and dividers which would prevent those inside from getting a clean look at her as she moves.

She's silent as she walks and silent as she runs, thanks to her adept powers. 133 meters, she has estimated. This will take her about a minute, though it might be an exhausting one. She has used this power in this way before, but never for quite such a tall structure. She doesn't have much in the way of insurance policies, either, save for her grapple gun and the faint hope that it might save her in an emergency.

But she has guts. 6 meters at a time, she runs, scrambling her way up in a way that wouldn't work for a normal person with a normal body; with her, it does. And then she rests, focusing her qi again, steeling her nerves. And again, this process is repeated. And again. She repeats this ten times, eventually finding herself where she's supposed to be. A bit of technology helps with that. That helmet of hers is smart, a HUD overlaying the building map and her distance from the target room in her field of vision. A little mix of technology and magic can go a long way.

She leans in toward the window slightly, now 180 feet in the air, held up only by the grippy microfiber of her gloves. And then she quietly sticks a cable guide on the outside of the window, obscured by a plant inside the room, routing one end of the data cable through it. Then another, hidden behind a desk, turning the cable upward.

And up she goes, tracing that cable along a hopefully invisible route due to clever placement, close to the glass to avoid the worst of the wind. About 13 more trips upward are needed, a harrowing 40 seconds as she climbs higher and higher, eventually hundreds of feet into the air. And then she reaches the top. She peeks her invisible head above the roof's ledge, just barely. Spotting the roof service entrance, where the sensors are likely clustered, she begins to skirt the edge of the roof to avoid it, finding a huge HVAC unit to block line of sight from those who might be casually coming here to work or get a smoke. And then the satellite dish is placed. She doesn't have to do much. She asked those more technically inclined to preconfigure it before she set off. All she has to do now is the /really/ hard part.

She looks down. Only one way to go from here. Retracing her path upward, she begins to descend.

As the van pulls up nearby, Lost nods to the rest of the team, having wished Feather good luck before the adept disembarked to make her harrowing scurry up the side of the building. Posh smiles, checking her credentials, which she loads onto a burner pocsec for presentation and scanning - flashing a pocsec after all works, for presenting most credentials. «That's such a great cover. It'll even explain why there might be some noise or something» She marves again at Imaki's inventiveness, and then gives Lost a smile. "There, perfect," she says, finishing up muting Lost's usually lovely cheekbones. "All right, let's head in."

The entrance to the 34 story building is like many, the name, 'Freeman Building' emblazoned off the top, with a single bored security guard behind a desk. "Checkin," he says, tiredly.

Posh waves the credentials presented by Imaki. "My associate and I are here to help address a magical disturbance on the 12th floor," she says. "There are concerns of spirit possession," she says. "We'd recommend you keep anyone away from the floor," she says. "My associate can elaborate on some of the nasty side effects of contact with an unchained paranormal entity," she says, making way for Lost.

She conducts a prelimiary flight check on the drone, linking it to her network adn setting a basic external search and object identification reoutine into effect before releasing it into the awaiting sky. When the bumble takes off she proceeds to checking the airways for any interesting traffic.

Krieg is able to see through the bumble that there is little unexpected on the building from the outside. I will do my utmost to look suitably corporate." She does this by adopting a neutral, if mildly annoyed expression before following in Posh's wake. Looking to the security guard, she shifts her weight and launches into what sounds like a rather rote spiel, "Many spirits may not be able to hurt one /physically/, but even slight exposure has been proven to cause impotence in both the short /and/ long term." As Lost and Posh enter the elevator, the power to its camera is part of the elevator's host, so it's relatively easy for Nubia to command the elevator camera to display a still image.

Commlink-Posh> Posh sends, « All right, Lost, I suppose make me invisible, and don't come out of the elevator into the line of sight of the camera at the front door until I've got the tap set and Krieg gives the all clear. »

Feather reaches the ground without incident. No longer carrying any visible gear, she's a lot harder to spot now. But she's not quite done yet. Finding the exit to the building's garage, she spots two older year-model commuter EV's parked back-to-back on the street near the exit to the garage. Not quite done yet, she seems to have some other plan in mind, quietly reaching beneath two of the vehicles, severing their fluid lines, leaving a growing pool of orange liquid beneath each one. And then she crosses the street, looking for a nearby building a few stories tall, taking an up an overwatch position.

Over comms, she addresses her comrades. "I'm standing by near the garage exit. Use that as your point of egress. Good luck. But if we cannot do this quietly, we have a back-up plan. I can provide quiet covering fire from here, if you're being pursued. Or if you need a more flashy diversion, I have a second plan on standby that we can use to cover our exit."

Posh shows a map to Lost that will probably make it clear what she intends. "There's a camera just outside the elevator, watching the front door of the office," she explains.

Krieg clearly can tell that the security operator, still rigged in, has fallen unconscious under her electronic assault, probably drooling in his chair. If anyone were to check on him, though, how can you tell when he's drooling in his chair in regular mode, or when he's been knocked out? Such questions are more than metaphysical, as Krieg realizes that she has control of cameras for the inside of the office area, controls for the maglocked door in front, and indeed, controls for a gel round loaded autogun in the back office.

What she is able to see, inside the main atrium, is disturbing. For there is a presence there. It is hard to make it out, directly, but clearly something odd has happened, for it just stand there, facing the fire escape door, motionless, looking like a juggernaut formed from heated lava, though it seems not to damage the floor, perhaps because the floor around its feet have melted and then cooled, In any case, the corpses are of a few punk-styled elves and humans, all of them with elaborate tattoos and the like. With the spirit staring directly at the fire escape door, what happened can only be figured from the available information.

Krieg goes from begining her access to the midst of a rampant and envolved battle in an instant. The opposing Rigger seems to have jumped in just in time to oppose her attempts, causing a massive spike of conflict across the network. In any case, that's the story of what happens in Denver: relax your vigilance, and the runners descend like locusts. But what could have been going on here to cause this? Clearly, there are some major personnel issues with the security for this job."

Commlink-Posh> Posh sends, « Krieg. Do you have the doors? Can you see anything in there? »

«Plot» Posh says, "No automatic alarms triggered."

Commlink-Posh> Posh sends, « Is there evidence of any spirit activity in there, or was that a false alarm? I suppose, I'd like this main door, and also the door that leads into the management office where the secure server likely is. »

Commlink-Krieg> Krieg sends, « There appears to have been signifigant activity within the facility. There is some form of heated golem form near the fire escape. There is also several bodies within the facility, all bear signifigant markings. »

« A golem? » Lost replies over the commline in a curious tone, « Sounds like it could be a fire elemental. But why would it be… generating bodies? » Pursing her lips to the side, she glances at Posh,« I don't like this. There's definitely something fishy going on here. If we can avoid the golem, whatever it is, I say we go for that. If not… well, I'll deal with it as well as I can. »

Commlink-Feather> Feather sends, « Might that be the supposed first runner team sent to handle this mission? If so, why haven't the bodies been cleared? Is that activity recent? »

Posh nods to Lost. "Well," she says. "So rarely do I have a chance to take a breather like this ahead of time," she says. "In any case," she says, "I suppose there's nothing for it. It's not like this spirit…or whatever it is…can report to anyone," she says. She offers a quick smile and moves to head through the door with her comrade.

There is a palpable heat inside the room as Posh enters, figuring that her aura is going to attract him, as she's been told by the other mages. "Hey ugly," Posh can't resist saying, glancing at the bodies littered around it, the creature slowly turning, wordlessly, to present a featureless rocky face seamless with lava. "Looks like you've been a bad boy."

Commlink-Posh> Posh sends, « I think something else might have happened with that shaman. This guy is way too serious to have been a normal security spirit. »

Commlink-Krieg> Krieg sends, « If it is anything like the stories, it should have a firey temperment. »

«Plot» Posh says, "Krieg's activation of the fire prevention system via CCSS fills the area with flame retardant smoke, imposing 'Fire Retardant Smoke.' This acts as Smoke to metahumans and provides +1 TN to actions of any fire-associated spirits in the scene."

Krieg checks the various systems available to her, noting the fire supression system may be usefull. Last time she encountered such a creature it proved effective in limiting its rampage. A mental command latter, it's done.

The fire suppression system aims its dry chemical agents spraying nozzles in the direction of the heat source: spraying a white haze of flame retardant against the offender. It has water, but this is a major heat source, it seems, and the creature staggers a moment under that blast, which certainly has the effect of fogging everything up in the room.

The chatter on the commline is met with a bit of a wry smile, though Lost glances toward Posh with concern before focusing her attention fully on the encroaching fire elemental. Clenching her left fist, she stands with her feet shoulder-width apart, inhaling sharply. The dark-haired elf's aura flares as she locks her will with the elemental's, hoping to send it back where it came from. It does not seem to go as well as she might have hoped. The elemental is still there, after all, and seems no worse for wear. But it is rooted where it stands, stuck in a contest with the elven mage. Though, she's stuck where she is as well.

Commlink-Krieg> Krieg sends, « Incident occured roughly 3h 30m ago, awakened battle. »

Feather had been waiting. As the call for help comes in, though, she shifts to plan C. She had borrowed a full-sized grapple gun from the van before surmounting this roof, and here she decides to make good use of it. 45 meters is the distance read in her helmet's rangefinder, and she quietly manipulates the magnification reticle bundled with it to account for the ballistics of the grapple gun she's about to fire. It's not a big adjustment from the software's usual purpose, bows, and a few moments later, she has a firing solution.

She primes the gun, pneumatic force building. She aims. And then she fires, the hook sailing through the air, beginning to fall just in time to catch on the railing of the exterior of the fire escape. Securing the gun itself to the ledge near her, she creates for herself both a point of ingress and a means of egress for the team. Once they have the data, they won't even need to use the door. She just hopes they have the guts to zipline.

And then she starts to climb. The angle is a bit steep, so it's not quite easy going, but using her gecko gloves for grip, she makes steady progress, dangling beneath the wire as she pulls herself hand over hand.

Seeing the spirit blasted and engaged in battle with Lost, Posh does the one thing that she's done before that works: get all up close and personal, ignoring the burning in her clothes, though in a couple places they have started to burn her realskinn and that of her leg. Still, with endorphins pumping through her, she doesn't notice yet, but she suddenly is surprised and in quite a bit of pain as the searing heat starts to intensify, a sudden raging intense gas burner heat as she closes her fist and attempts to punch the spirit up close! Though the spirit seems to very much not like it as her shock hand discharges, shuddering through the metallic earth, though it seems little diminished by her direct melee assault, much to her chagrin…and pain of attacking something so bloody hot.

This time, Posh manages to have an effect; the spirit, surprised, reels under the assault of the brassy woman, her anger only inflated by the pain as a rather nasty looking kick travels through her. Feather's timing wasn't great. She showed up a little late to the party. But with Posh diverting its physical attention and Lost keeping the dual-natured being held in a battle of wills on the astral, she had enough time to make the trip, climbing her way to the group, opening the fire exit conveniently unlocked by the last team. She doesn't seem to mind stepping over their bodies to fight, and she doesn't seem to hesitate in fighting spirits. She comes from Dongbei, after all, a place where you legitimately might have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a spirit.

The orange metal of her blade, alloyed with orichalcum most likely, flares as she charges. Fighting carefully, defensively, she attacks, using her weapon's reach to keep the spirit at arm's length, making opportunistic strikes when she can. When she finally sees a solid opening, though, she lunges forward, a downward strike cleaving the creature in two, its physical form almost instantly beginning to cool and harden and crumble as its astral form is disrupted by her attack.

She steps back a moment later. Her sword is replaced in the oversized black case on her back. And then her form ripples and distorts as she quietly vanishes from view, her ruthenium again engaging. When she finally speaks, it's on comms. "Lets get the data and get out of here. If you can handle the speed, we can zipline down using the wire. There's a back alley behind that building that Sara can pick us up in."

Posh gasps, breathing hard, looking around the room, looking back at Feather, giving her a grateful smile. "All right," she says, smiling gratefully. "Wow," she says. "That…" She shudders a little. "The spirit was wavering," Feather replies matter-of-factly to Lost. "I don't doubt that you eventually would've won that contest. It was more a question of time."

Krieg makes sure to pause all sensor feed recording while the team is present. She locks down the security room if not needed and applies a quick cypher to it to slow any would be discoverer. She'll shut down broadcasts from the system besides the typical security check updates, and when the team exists set the place to reset to normal operating functions 5 minutes after our departure. «Comm»<The system is configured. Upon hearing her que, the shadow being does a quick log-off, her smattering of white butterflies erasing all her dataprints on the building's systems and she's back inside her own deck, but only momentarily. Then the girl is up, up and away, into space. She hovers in the satellite's Host for a few minutes, enjoying the simulated space environment before she beams herself back down into the satellite on the roof, through the datacord and .02 miliseconds later she's hacked past the firewall and sits inside the server's main datascape.

«Plot» Posh says, "Tally: 4"

Posh seems to only now process that Feather has created an exfil [atjwau. "All right, I think that's worthwhile to get out of here. We might get spotted, and there might be a news article, but…I'm eager to get this job finished and get done. She adds, "I think that's particularly inventive thinking though," she says, with a smile. "Certainly glad you took my invite to come along on this one." She glances back to Lost. "You too. Heck, this one might have been dead meat time for us, if we hadn't listened to Les's advice and took on another, and then Feather's advice and took on Lost."

«Plot» Posh says, "It is. Imaki might notice, though, a quick look at the paydata shows that it's worthless. It's clearly the correct file, but it's nothing other than a timesheet."

Feather collects the radios as instructed and calls Sara to begin to arrange the team's exfiltration. She wants the three of them to be on the rope and out of there as soon as they're ready. "I will be staying behind a little longer," she instructs the others. "Do not wait for me. Pull back the line once the both of you are down. The stairwell will lead you straight down to the ground floor, and Sara will be waiting in the back alley. I will retrieve the satellite transmitter and data cable and then leave on my bike."

"Sounds good to me…" Lost replies with a nod, "If we got what we came for, I'm ready to split. Hopefully no one spots us on the zipline, but… I can't think of a faster way to get ourselves down from this level." She fixes a smile on Posh, "Always happy to help. Glad I was able to earn my cut here." Looking to Feather, she arches an eyebrow, "Are you sure you're going to be alright recovering that stuff on your own?" Blinking, she shakes her head, "Forgive me, I'm sure you'll be fine. Stay safe, and we'll see you later."

While she has time to wait, she does another search and the shadow being picks up on some more paydata that might sell outside their current employee. So once the download finishes on the objective, she starts downloading the other file as well. A half a second goes by and then the shadow being lets loose her hoard of white butterflies that takes care of erasing her digitial fingerprints from the system. A quick flutter through the satellite host's records as well and then poof, Imaki wakes up in the tea den. Once she packs up her deck she decides to get a cup of orange pekoe tea while she waits for the ground team to come pick her up and while she's at it she contacts her friend DarkWolf to sell the extra paydata to.

Posh tests the grapple line. "Maybe I should go second to last," she say. "You sure it will hold?" she asks. "And here, you can borrow this." She offers her ruthi cloak to Lost, so she'll have cover climbing down the line.

Lost glances at the line, then back to Posh, "I sure hope so…" She says, suddenly looking unsure, "I would hate to end up a stain on the ground." Making a face, she covers herself with the cloak, grits her teeth, and grabs the zipline handle, ready to make her descent.

Once the ground crew arrives, Imaki lets the others know of the extra two grand she can forward to accounts or send in cash from the extra paydata she snagged off the server, and transfers over the objective file to Posh for delivery to the client. She rides back in silence, offering each of the team members a slight smile but she looks a little tired after the extended Trix run. Once she's dropped off in the CAS sector she bids everyone a farewell and good night before she wanders off into the crowds.

The grapple line was a well placed idea, and with the satellite link and fiberoptic cable retrieved now, Posh takes a deep breath and hooks her arms around the line, her armored jacket protecting her as she slides down at speed and slams heavily into Lost, who'd just landed. Posh had apparently misjudged her extra velocity at the start, and her greater mass to surface area ratio than Lost has.

Posh leans down, alarmed and apologetic to help Lost up, with a profusion of apologies. She runs through her head anything that needs to be done before getting in the van - the datatap was retrieved, also those nifty radios she saw, Feather's got the satlink and cable…

Oh that's right! Feather told her to reel in the grapple. She does so, from there, secures the grapple and its line, and sweeps it into her bag. She smiles at Lost, offering an arm. "Sara's waiting," she says. "Plus, we can get there before Feather."

Lost had pretty much come to a standstill after taking the zipline down. She's quite grateful for the armor she's wearing, though, as it absorbs most of the impact transferred from the incoming Poshjectile, but the dark-haired elf is still bowled over. "Oww…" She whines, not looking any worse for wear as Posh helps her back to her feet. "We good?" She asks, looking around furtively, "Ok…" She nods, once everything is squared away, and starts to head in the direction of Sara's van.

Feather's clean-up is a long one. It feels long to her, anyway. When she finally gets down from the building, she's pretty close to exhausted. When she makes it back to the van, dumping in the borrowed gear, she looks spent. "I will meet you at home," is all she says. Almost faithfully, her bike snakes its way around a bend in the alley, driving itself right up to her. She slides her weapon case into its smuggling compartment, then hops on. A brief wave is given before the machine heads out onto the street.

Posh gives a grateful smile to Feather as she dumps the borrowed gear in the van, Posh helping Lost in and then standing in the back, ready to close the back door. "Great job out there, Feather," she says. "I know I'd be proud to call you sister."
