GM: Captain Vimes
Players: Annie
Synopsis: A summoning goes horribly awry.
Date:

Annie picks an area for her summoning circle that contains a large rock to serve as an altar and experimentally paces out the perimeter for the force ten temporary circle. Once she is satisfied that there is enough room for the full circle diameter, she heads on over to her ritual pack and begins pulling out the various items she will need for the circle creation and the actual summoning itself.

A prepared packet of powdered bone mixed with a carefully selected variety of other ground minerals is next. Annie walks the perimeter of her circle once more, trailing the dust in her wake as she softly chants to center herself for the task at hand. The creation of the circle takes around ten hours in total, but once it is complete it will most likely be good for three to four summonings over the next few days.

Braziers filled with the appropriate elemental incense and hand-made torches are placed at the four quarters corresponding to the points of the compass. A purple pillar candle, a white illuminator candle and a sculptural depiction of Hecate are placed on the makeshift altar along with Annie's athame, wand, staff, and elemental correspondences.

The ritual is ready to begin.

Annie strips off her clothes leaving nothing on but her consecrated jewelry and foci, then loosely ties the spun Silver cord representing her official rank as a High Priestess of Hecate about her waist. She stands before her altar and takes a moment to ground and center herself for the ritual ahead, then draws her athame from its sheath with her right hand.

The silvered blade glints in the moonlight as she traces an invoking pentagram into the air over the altar. Annie begins the ritual, chanting softly in Sperethiel:

"I bless you now that you may aid
The energy flow as magick is made
I cast out all negativity,
Leaving only the good that I may need
Within you as I start this Rite
Blessed be my magick this night.”

With her left hand she makes a quick arcane gesture toward the illuminator candle on the Altar and the wick bursts into flame in response to her magical urging.

"I invoke thee Creature of Light,
Illuminate the path of Magick this night."

Annie exhales slowly, raising her arms toward the moon riding the night sky overhead. As if at her urging the soft whispers of a breeze can be heard, at first at a distance and then rapidly closing on the circle. As it arrives near the ritual location it seems to swirl around the clearing as if cleaning the area of negativity. Annie murmurs softly, her eyes closed and arms still upraised toward the heavens.

“Witches Breeze, swift in flight
Cast Out Darkness, Bring in Light
Earth be hallow; Air be clear; Fire bright; as water heals
A sacred bridge this site shall be, as I will, so mote it be!”

She lowers her arms and tosses her head to clear some of the hair from her eyes. Her athame sketches a banishing pentagram over the censer, and a fine gray smoke begins to rise from it as the incense ignites.

“I purify and consecrate this creature of air.
May all that is good enter herein in the name of the Goddess Hecate”

Another banishing pentagram over the red candle.

“I purify and consecrate this creature of fire.
May all that is good enter herein in the name of the Goddess Hecate”

Once more over the half shell filled with rain water.

“I purify and consecrate this creature of water.
May all that is good enter herein in the name of the Goddess Hecate”

And finally over the lacquered clay bowl of salt.

“I purify and consecrate this creature of earth.
May all that is good enter herein in the name of the Goddess Hecate”

The athame is placed in the sheath tied to the cord around her waist and the staff is taken off the altar and given a quick spin to extend it to its full length.

The staff activates in response to Annies mental urging and pulses with a surge of power as it's connection with it's mistress is reestablished. A soft hum fills the air, oddly reminiscent of a purring cat. The orichalcum runes along the weapons length begin filling with a pastel blue light which seems to flow outward from the point Annie's hands connect with it. The light begins pulsing; thump-thump, thump-thump, timed to the beating rhythm of the Earth mages heart.

Annie walks to the northernmost point of the circle, sketches a courteous salute to her element, then begins walking deosil around the circle. Her staff is raised before her, the bluish light illuminating her path as she walks around the circle perimeter three times. As she makes each circuit, the fine powdered lines that form the circle itself begin to glow softly and increase in intensity on each pass as she repeats:

“I conjure this circle as a sacred space, a place between worlds and out of time.
I conjure this circle as a boundary of protection to preserve and contain all energies that will be raised herein.
I conjure this circle in perfect love and perfect trust in honor of the Goddess Hecate.”

Once the three passes have been completed she returns to the altar and lays her staff across the stone. It flickers momentarily as if disappointed and then its glowing runes fade. She picks up the bowl of salt, draws her athame once more and heads to the northern quarter where she raises the silver bowl in a salute and sketches an invoking pentagram with the point of her blade.

“Planter! My powerful and faithful elemental of the north, ever silent Guardian of my honored Element,
I bid you join and stand guard over my circle this evening.
Lend me your powers of strength, endurance, and wisdom
That we may best honor the Goddess Hecate as she presides over my Summoning.
I bid you hail and welcome.”

The air in the northern quarter seems to shimmer as the powerful Earth Elemental slowly materializes to take his station. The torch, time honored symbol of Hecate, bursts into flame with a momentary surge of blindingly intense power as the quarter is charged.

Annie returns to the altar and takes up the censer before proceeding to the east, saluting and once more sketching the invoking pentagram.

“Ditz! My ever knowing guardian of the element of Air,
I bid you join and stand guard over my circle on this evening.
Lend me your powers of intelligence, practicality, and joy
That we may best honor the Goddess Hecate as she presides over my Summoning.
I bid you hail and welcome.”

The elemental slowly begins materializing as she takes her place, the torch begins blazing merrily as if to denote that the Air elemental is in place.

One more trip to the altar and the red candle is retrieved, and Annie turns to the south. Yet another salute and expertly traced invoking pentagram.

“Sizzle! My ever willful guardian of the element of fire,
I bid you join and stand guard over my circle on this evening.
Lend me your powers of courage, enthusiasm, and willpower
That we may best honor the Goddess Hecate as she presides over my Summoning.
I bid you hail and welcome.”

Sizzle seems to materialize almost over the now blazing torch, feeding off of it's meager energy as he takes up his post.

Annie returns to the altar and retrieves the half shell filled with rain water. She steps to the west, salutes solemnly and the blade in her hand flickers once more as the final pentagram is sketched.

“River! My ever daring guardian of the element of water,
I bid you join and stand guard over my circle on this evening.
Lend me your powers of love, compassion, and receptivity
That we may best honor the Goddess Hecate as she presides over my Summoning.
I bid you hail and welcome.”

River materializes, almost reluctantly. The torch bursts into flame and immediately begins guttering and smoking with trails of steam that begins to fill the clearing with a soft white mist. The torch remains burning however, in spite of the somewhat damp guardian that fills the air next to it.

Annie returns to the altar, once more sheathing her athame. She stands in front of the altar, ignites the Goddess candle with a snap of her fingers, then lowers her head as she begins the invocation of her Goddess and Patron.

"Hecate, beautiful Crone of Night
I call upon your magickal might.
Render aid and guide me in my fight.
Help me to do no wrong within your sight."

The staff is drawn from the altar once more, the exultant humming filling the air as it seems to express it's excitement at once more being a part of the ritual. Annie suppresses a grin…some of these powerful foci seemed to develop personalities of their own once bonded. At least it wasn't humming the Benny Hill theme this time…that would definitely be inappropriate given the circumstances. The staff is raised into the air as Annie calls out:

"Hecate! Tonight I seek the aid of another of your children. A more powerful and willful being than I have requested from you in many years. I seek his aid in my endeavors and one day I hope to earn his friendship and trust. I pledge that if he is injured, I will recover and heal him. I pledge that I will not ask him to do anything contrary or disrespectful to his nature as your honored servant. And when his time with me is through, I will willingly free him from my service."

Annie turns toward the north and throws her head back, eyes closed in concentration as she mentally opens a channel to the metaplanes, sending out her call to one of the more powerful denizens residing there.

A mental *click* seems to fill the Elf mages mind as she makes contact with her desired subject, a surge of pain arcing across her forehead from temple to temple from the strain. A big one. She can sense it's lumbering approach as it arrives on the physical plane and begins materializing before her.

She doesn't hesitate before mentally widening the channels to the metaplanes, seeking to infuse the Elemental with more power in an attempt to provoke it to it's Great Form.

And then it all goes pear shaped.

Blinding pain nearly drives her to her knees, causing her to stagger backward from the quickly forming elemental. A sense of mindless rage fills her head for the moment before the Elemental wrenches itself out of her control and goes free.

"Fuck me!", Annie mutters to herself as she raises the staff in a last ditch effort to defend against the enraged massive earthen monster.

The staff blazes with neon blue intensity, the hum switching immediately from the once contented purr to a more martial throbbing…rising in pitch and intensity to match the dramatically elevated rise of its mistresses racing heart.

The Earth rumbles as the spirit breaks free of Annie's control. Trees quake, branches splinter, the ground rises and falls in the circle: the instant, initial burst of wrath splintering the sacred space of the circle…

And there, in the circle, wearing the same garb as the day she died…

It's annie's niece.

"Hello, Aunt," she murmurs, her smile twisting. "Miss me?"

Talia was a human Apache woman in her early fifties at the time she died. Waist length ebony hair streaked with strands of silver, her stature and build showing her genetic relation to her aunt; namely short and willowy. Laugh lines were distinct at the corners of her eyes and mouth…which aren't exactly visible in her more somber ancestor.

Annie still has her staff at the ready, though she does lower it slightly as the image of her niece appears before her. She didn't expect this, though with her Goddess' connection to the underworld, she certainly should have.

"Indeed I did.", Annie murmurs in response, "I wasn't expecting a family reunion tonight…so please forgive the lack of those tasty sandwiches you used to adore so much."

Johnny runs his circuit of the property. Sundown was hours ago. Every so often, just to prove he's still got the goods, Johnny does a full ruc-run. It's not a fun thing, no music player in a trendy jogging suit, staring at cute tits as they run by. No, a serious run, with serious weight. It's got even Johnny sweating up a storm as he runs in the cold, near freezing denver night.

Janie has been walking back toward the Vault. Regardless of her reservations and concerns, Annie is a big girl and Janie trusts her not to do something thoughtlessly rash like starting off by summoning the biggest elemental she possibly can… On the other hand, the countryside /is/ lovely tonight this time of year, so she has been taking her time.

And then the woman explodes outwards, becoming a shower of living rocks that comes for annie with a life of their own, sweeping around the woman, trying to get into her, trying to get in her lungs, trying to cling to her body and drag her back into the earth and crush every ounce of life from her!

Annie staggers backward, Roger (her uber powerful magical staff o' doom) swinging upward in an attempt to deflect the brunt of the assault. Only the last minute twist of her body and sideways movement manages to allow the slender mage to avoid being fully engulfed. As it is, oddly enough, Annie is really wishing she had at least thought to wear a sports bra. Damn skyclad rituals.

"Ditz! Engage!", Annie calls out at the top of her lungs as she attempts to move around the altar and away from the rampaging spirit. Typically hiding from an Earth Elemental behind a fucking BOULDER, probably isn't the best advice…but the elf mage is attempting to buy time for now.

The Air elemental, who was standing ready as one of the ritual guardians, flows forward with an accompanying shrieking howl of whipping wind, throwing leaves into the air around her as she moves toward the spirit attacking her mistress.

Johnny comes to a halt, his boots skidding a bit in the gravel of the running trail. Ears alert, he narrows his eyes… Some things not right. This isn't a sizemicly active area. He orients himself, then patches in to the patrol-drone… getting a birds eye view of the situation as he moves to head in the area of the disturbance.

Commlink-(Geist): Nacht to base.

Janie doesn't stumble as the earth moves below her, but she /does/ pause. That didn't feel like she'd expect a /safe/ elemental summoning would have… And even if it were, Johnny will likely tear a strip off Annie's hide for causing tremors this close to the vault.

A snap decision is made, and a command to Athena goes out at the speed of thought. The owl leaps from her shoulder and vanishes into the astral, making a beeline for the epicenter of that tremor while Janie turns on her heel and breaks into a sprint, keying her comm as she goes.

Commlink-Mustang> Janie says, "Nacht, Mustang. I left Breeze to experiment with great form elementals a while ago, but that didn't feel like it went well. Headin' back t'investigate."

Commlink-(Geist): In route myself. I've sent Silk an IM, but she's out of the pocket.

Comm-IM (Geist): Disturbance of some kind topside. Already on a run, investigating.'.

COMM-IM (Silk): Way out of pocket in Aurora. Do I need to be en route?

Comm-IM (Geist): No data.'.

Commlink-Mustang> Janie says, "Nacht, Mustang. I left Breeze to experiment with great form elementals a while ago, but that didn't feel like it went well. Headin' back t'investigate."

Comm-IM (Geist): New Data. Mustang indicates breeze was workign with G-Frm Ele's in the back 40.'

Comm-IM (Silk): I can be there in 15 minutes or less?

Comm-IM (Geist): Too far away for anything reasonable. I'll keep you updated.

The earth elemental roars as it turns on Ditzy, striking out with its rocky limbs as it pulls away from annie, trying to rip the spirit limb from limb…

Ditz has had a lot of experience working with Annie for the last five years, much more than a simple newborn like this critter…regardless that the newborn is the size of a fucking Buick. The Air Elemental flows around the attacking free spirit and then surges inward as it attempts to 'strangle' the life from it.

As the spirit roars, the earth shakes again, trembling at the wrath the earth elemental can manage to bring to bear.

Two trees, ancient monarchs of the forest, shatter under the forces being expended here.

Commlink-(Geist): We have serious hostiles!

Johnny breaks in to a run, dropping the heavy rucksack. "Shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit!" He mutters, the ExEx clip, letting it clatter to the forest floor as he moves. GPS notation made as to location; will retrive later. The gold clip he carries for JUST THESE SORTS OF ISSUES slams home and the gun snaps to rights. "I HATE MAGIC!" He screams as he runs. "AND ALL YOU FUCKING MAGES! EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU! AND I REALLY HATE PUSSY ASS MOTHER FUCKEN ASTRAL TRIPPEN IMMUNE TO MUNDANES DUMB AS ROCKS STUPID SHIT ELEMENTALS!"

Commlink-Mustang> Janie mutters several curses. "All points, Mustang. Breeze is being engaged by an out-of-control Earth Elemental. Estimate eight to ten on the Hume scale. One of her air elementals is assisting her.

Commlink-(Geist): When this is over, we are having a discussion about the shit we teach people.

Janie then shuts up and concentrates on running, silently thanking the Warrior for granting her clarity of sight.

Commlink-Mustang> Janie says, "Acknowledged."

Unable to hear the radio, Kassandra's body is safely watched over by several of her assistants, her soul and power hurtling through the atmosphere at the speed of thought, dodging around two watchers out on a joyride and a stray mage trying to corral them. The dark haired woman is a blur of blue and glitter, streaking towards the base.

Annie leaps forward, vaulting with one foot on her altar and then sailing through the air toward the rogue spirit. Roger buzzes eagerly as it anticipates the impending kill, its orichalcum runes continuing to pulse with blazing neon blue light in time to its owners adrenaline fueled heartbeat. The staff flickers through the air, leaving a glowing after image on the retinas of any observers and impacts the free spirit with a flash of light and an audible *CRACK* noise.

The rampaging spirit only gets a moment to shriek in pain as its physical form is violently disrupted by the combined attack from Roger and Ditz. Dirt and tiny rocks explode outward forming a debris cloud that engulfs the clearing for a few moments before slowly beginning to settle downward or drift away on a passing breeze.

Annie lands heavily in a semi-crouch on the far side of the spirits former position, then gives Roger a final flourish twirl as she turns to face Ditz. "Thanks Hon", she murmurs softly to her Air Elemental.

Commlink-Mustang> Janie slows down from her breakneck pace as Athena relays the latest development. "All points, Mustang. Elemental is down. Situation contained… For now."

Johnny comes, stripped to the waste, sweating, armed only with a pistol, charging in to the clearing. He slides to a stop, realizing Annie is naked. "Well." Says he, pistol at the ready, scanning the perimeter… "On the plus side, I got to see annies tits."

The air tears open as Kassandra manifests and becomes visible to this side of the Veil, her gossamer wings beating the air, hair swirling behind her. Energy crackles around both hands as she looks around with a scowl, peering for danger or something out of the ordinary to vent upon.

She glances past the naked Annie, the elemental, the sweating Johnny, remarking in a quiet voice that nonetheless carries, "Someone called for an intervention?"

Janie arrives at roughly the same time as Johnny from the other side of the clearing as Athena settles back onto her shoulder. Now that the immediate danger is past, the adrenaline needs other ways to spend itself, and yelling at Annie sounds like a very tempting idea right now…

Still, one thing to confirm first. "… Athena couldn't see f'r sure, but that wasn't /just/ an uncontrolled earth elemental, was it?"

Annie blinks in surprise as the cavalry begins arriving on the scene, "Sorry to wake you. Everything is under control.", she pauses and adds after a moment, "I think." She suddenly seems to realize that she is still dressed (or undressed as the case may be) for ritual and takes a second to clothe herself with a physical mask spell, locking it down with her sustaining focus. It doesn't do much to protect her modesty from Kassandra, but what the heck.

She looks over at Janie and nods sadly, "Oddly enough…it was. I've summoned them at that level before without a problem. Maybe it's because Mercury is in retrograde…but my karma wasn't where it should have been and it slipped the leash."

"More'n that, it seemed," Janie adds. "It went /Free/, not just uncontrolled."

Johnny steps closer, not letting the gun drop. "Well. I got my cardio for the night." He looks at Annie then, eyes goign up and down her form. He know's what she looks like naked now. and he's got a mind for detail. "Cute mole."

Sniffing the air still ripe from the manifestations of pure Elemental power and might, Kassandra adds, "It is gone, but only for the moment." Her gaze sweeps the area for anything else out of the ordinary, adding, "May want to move this party elsewhere. The amount of sheer power unleashed here is bound to have alerted someone that there is more going on here than not."

Johnny looks to the shimmering form of Kassandra, offering a nod. "Lets take this downstairs."

Annie nods to Janie, "It may have been. I didn't have a chance to carefully assense it during the engagement.", she nods to Johnny and Silk, "I will clean up here and loiter a bit to deal with anyone that might swing by to check things out. Hopefully we are remote enough and its late enough that no-one will take notice."

Janie shakes her head. "I think this screwup managed t'literally measure on th'Richter scale. Someone's bound t'come an'check, and we want t'not be here when they do."

"Luckly…" Says Johnny as he moves to walk back twords the Vault itself… "We are in the middle of nowhere and the USGS aint what it used to be."

"I'll go back and retrieve myself and meet you in fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on air traffic and weather." Kassandra glances at the sky, seeing beyond just clouds and wind but the very energy patterns that make up the fronts and thermals, "And it is going to snow too, so things are looking up." She laughs aloud and then vanishes abruptly, sending her consciousness back to her waiting body.

Johnny chuckles now, realizing just how cold it is as his heart starts to slow and excess heat is dissipated. "Lovely. And here I am in my favorite set of nipples."

Annie spends a few moments thanking and dismissing her elementals. No need, or time for that matter, to be overly formal and ritualistic at this point. The sacred circles perimeter was shattered during the engagement, and the altars contents were effectively scattered when the elf mage used it as a vaulting horse to get at her attacker. She shakes her head sadly, gets dressed, and then begins picking up her ritual supplies and packing them into her backpack

Once the area is cleaned up, with the exception of the fallen trees, Annie stands quietly for a few moments to look over the scene. "You need to get over that rage little sister.", she murmurs softly to the now departed and disrupted spirit, "I offered you my friendship and companionship. You chose to attack. Enjoy your freedom and don't force me to destroy you.", she murmurs softly as she turns and begins the hike back to the vault.
