She Who Always Lives on the Coast

GM: Whiskey Slim
Players: Smoke, Whiskey Slim
Synopsis: This is an AQ of Smoke and Whiskey Slim learning the meta magic feat Extended Masking. This is a retelling of a classic Coyote story.
Date: 10/23/2072

The smell of sage is thick in the air, hot rocks burn in the center of the room sitting in a fire pit that has been carved out of the stone floor, the air is hot and humid almost stifling. Smoke and Whiskey sit cross-legged on the floor on either side of the fire pit in the middle of the lodge, Beth also sits in the lodge with them, (For those of you not acquainted with Beth she is the spirit that binds the witch doctor society together and pretty much tells them what to do and where to go) her normal pencil skirt and white shirt replaced by shadow and stars as magic energy swirls around her. She lifts a water dipper and pours water onto the stones; it sizzles and hisses and the sounds of music escapes from grandfather stone. Beth opens her eyes and all you can see are stars in the dark depths of them, she speaks "Aho Mitakuye Oyasin, let me tell you a story for I am the keeper of tales and lore, there were once two boys who went looking for ‘She who always lives on the coast’ and this is their part in her story…”
An old Sioux woman stands on the threshold of what is beyond the door and looks at the two young braves. She smiles a quirky little grin and says "Tell me a secret and then see if your magic is strong enough to go where you need to go."
Whiskey turns and looks towards Smoke and then at Beth before standing up and moving from the protection of the lodge towards the threshold "It was Coyote who stole Smoke's China-man food but him only do it to impress da gurls no cause him was really hungry…" Whiskey looks sheepishly at Smoke and then breathes deep to see if his magic is strong enough…
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Magic + 5 (astral pool) vs TN 5 for "bypassing the threshold":
1 2 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 5 5 7 8 10 = 7 Successes
Smoke feels the heat of the grandfather stone, sweat running and the intensity of the hiss of the water as it becomes steam. His small blade; the tool of protection that he always takes with him on these journeys is placed at his side, fingertips resting on the grip. He slips from his body and looks at the woman. "I am Tijinko Redsky and I left the woman who bore my children because she could not in the end understand my way of magick. It was selfish, but to continue learning I had to walk that path." He stands and moves to Whiskey's side.
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Magic + 7 (astral pool) vs TN 5 for "bypassing the guardian at the threshold":
1 1 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 4 5 5 7 7 11 11 17 = 7 Successes
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, " Both Whiskey and Smoke get 7 successes which will equal 3 extra karma for reroll during the astral quest."
Whiskey takes hold of his tomahawk and closes his eyes, stepping through the threshold and out onto the bank of a river he looks around seeing only an old man who is fixing a canoe.
Smoke appears next to him actually standing on the bank rather than in the cold river water. Whiskey lets out a howl "Smoke it got me…" Whiskey jumps and splashes around trying to get out of the river; all Smoke can really see is that there are fish swimming in the river, albeit big fish, but nothing more dangerous than a salmon - it may be that Whiskey is just freaked out about being cold and wet.
Smoke looks at Whiskey carefully, "Come, brother it is just the water. Step up on the bank beside me." He reaches out with his hand to offer help for the troll. His left hand still holds the small blade. He looks around a little as he does this, staying wary and being careful, things are not always what they seem in the mirror world.
Whiskey takes Smoke’s assistance and pulls himself out of the river. The old man fixing his canoe just stares at the two for a bit "What are the two of you doing? You cannot travel this river by foot, you need a canoe to get anywhere on it." The old man cocks his head to the side in a strangely familiar way "You boys trying to get somewhere?"
Whiskey responds as he drags himself out of the river "We are trying to visit ‘She who always lives on the coast.’" Water squishes out of his boots as he plants his feet on dry land.
"Well if you boys catch me some fish I will let you fix my canoe and then I will take you down the river" says the old man with a laughing grin on his face.
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "Roll survival, stealth or something like that to fish or something relevant fix the canoe soaking M physical"
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Stealth + 7 (Astral Pool) vs TN 5 for "Soaking M Phys":
1 1 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 7 7 = 2 Successes
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Stealth + 7 (Astral Pool) - 2 vs TN 5 for "Soaking M Phys kp1":
1 1 2 2 3 3 4 5 7 = 2 Successes
Smoke wades into the water with his blade and slowly creeps up on the salmon-sized fish. He lunges after remaining still for a time. The hand with the blade pulls up a red-scaled fish. He tosses that onto the bank and begins to hunt again. This time he is able to reach down with his free hand and catch the gill of a silver-scaled fish, just a little smaller than the first. He gives out a satisfied laugh and wades ashore.
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Wilderness Survival + 5 (astral pool) vs TN 5 for "soaking M Phys":
2 2 2 3 3 4 5 7 10 10 = 4 Successes
Whiskey, who is none too happy about having wet feet already, goes to help fix the canoe. He finds some pine sap and some reeds, pulls out a little water bag out his satchel and goes about making a patch for the canoe; soon the pine sap has turned to resin and sealed the split in the canoe and she is seaworthy once again. Whiskey drags the canoe down to the river and launches the canoe; the old man spryly jumps from the bank into the canoe. He sits in the middle and hands an oar to Whiskey and one to Smoke. "Paddle away boys paddle away," and Smoke and Whiskey paddle the old man down the river headed towards "She who always lives on the coast."
After paddling for a while Smoke and Whiskey notice an old blind woman sitting on the side of the river and she is carving something by feel. Whiskey, always one to talk, calls out to her "Hey there old woman what are you doing?" The old woman turns her head to listen to Whiskey and says "This old blind woman is carving; what is it that you are doing?" Whiskey responds, "Why old woman we are going to visit ‘She who always lives on the coast.’” The old woman’s face cringes in horror "Oh no, poor boy you should not go see ‘She who always lives on the coast.’” Whiskey looks confused (not that uncommon for him) but maybe it is time to ply the old woman for information…
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "This is the place of Charisma roll an appropriate social skill"
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Etiquette + 7 (Astral Pool) vs TN 5 for "Asking why?":
2 2 4 4 4 4 5 7 9 10 11 = 5 Successes
Smoke nods to Whiskey and tilts his head looking at the blind woman. "Why should we not continue on this journey to find 'She who always lives on the coast?’" He shifts a little in his seat and then asks, "Your face was filled with fear, why would you fear this person?"
"That one is a siren; she summons men to her using her magical charms and if she gets ahold of you she will eat you with her woman parts as she has teeth down there" the old woman points down between her legs. "She ate my beautiful son and I put out my eyes that day because I will never be able to see anything beautiful ever again. Please, please don't go"
But Whiskey and Smoke keep paddling on unable to stop themselves. Whiskey calls out, "We cannot stop we have to go to see ‘She who always lives on the coast.’ Can you help us in any way?"
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Etiquette + 5 (astral pool) vs TN 5:
1 1 1 3 3 3 5 5 10 = 3 Successes
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Etiquette + 5 (astral pool) - 3 (successes) vs TN 5 for "1kp":

«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Etiquette + 5 (astral pool) - 3 (successes) vs TN 5 for "3kp":
1 2 5 5 8 10 = 4 Successes
"Whiskey this one might be a little hard for me. A siren? Women that use charms… and draw people in? Teeth like that?" Smoke continues to paddle looking worried. "That just might be the worst thing ever."
"Here take this" the old woman says throwing them a stone chisel that she had been using to carve with "and stick that between her legs; maybe that will break off her teeth" the chisel flies through the air only to be caught by the old man whom our two braves thought was asleep in the middle of the canoe. That old man is pretty spry…and the canoe continues down the river.
They come upon another man who is standing in the river trying to fish but every time he almost gets a fish an old, cranky bear spirit eats the fish right out of the air. The old man is screaming at the spirit "Get out of the river you greedy bear spirit!"
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "Welcome to a place of spirits"
Smoke stands up in the canoe and grips his blade tightly staring at the bear spirit. "Be gone bear spirit or I will drive you away by taking your pelt!" He brandishes his knife and as they get closer he prepares to leap into astral combat with the creature. The blade glimmers and feathers appear on Smoke's arm that holds it.
Big River Bear raises up on his hind legs and roars at Smoke and Whiskey. His spirit is strong - maybe stronger than the two are capable of taking since Big River Bear is king of his domain…all the fish belong to him and our two braves and the old man who is sitting in the middle of the canoe are small in comparison…that’s saying a lot since one of them is Whiskey. Big River Bear slams into the canoe capsizing it and spilling Whiskey and Smoke out onto the rapids…somehow old man stays in the canoe and he howls as he paddles the canoe to the shore below the rapids yelling "I will save the canoe, boys, but you better take care of that bear!"
Whiskey drags himself out of the water, tomahawk in hand; water drips and runs down his hair "Damn ju bear me was jus gettin dry now we is defiantly takin ju skin" and combat ensues. Is that blood in the water or water in the blood? Whiskey howls…Big River Bear growls his mouth opening like some slathering beast of legend. Damn that thing could eat a troll whole…

The tomahawk opens the bears chest like a zipper is pulled.

«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "Bear dies before it hits the ground"
Smoke's blow is almost an afterthought compared to Whiskey's savage attack. Smoke's feet splash through the water and he shouts a war cry, ducking to the side and driving the tanto into the bear's armpit area, tearing deeply. The bear, already staggered now sags, arms dropping to its side and the energy seems to leave its’ eyes before the body topples with a red splash.
Whiskey cracks the mighty breastplate of their fallen enemy, and cuts free the heart of this once great beast. "Thank ju brother fo given ju life on our quest to find ‘She who always lives on da coast.’” He offers the heart to Smoke and begins skinning Big River Bear.
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Wilderness Survival + 5 (astral pool) vs TN 5 for "taking a bear pelt":
1 1 3 3 4 5 5 8 15 15 = 5 Successes
Smoke takes the heart and places it in a leather bundle, stowing it at his side. He looks for the canoe man and starts moving in that direction. "Aho Whiskey, that was a powerful bear. But you were the stronger warrior." He looks at the old man who was fishing. "You should be able to catch plenty now. Feed your family well!"
The fishing man yells from above them in the river "Thank you! Thank you but where do you go in such a hurry that you cannot stay and meet my family?"
Whiskey finishes skinning out Big River Bear and as he throws the pelt over his shoulder and starts heading for the canoe almost being tugged downstream he yells over his shoulder "We are going to see ‘She who always lives on the coast.’” The fisherman yells back, "Oh no, young braves don't go there; the father of ‘She who always lives on the coast’ kills anyone who comes to visit his daughter."
Whiskey yells back, "No we must go" and the fisherman yells again "If you must go take these masks; they will help you stay safe from injury and always beware of traps." With that he tosses a satchel towards the canoe and once again that spry old man jumps up and catches the satchel. As the old man sits down he starts going through the satchel and there are two masks: one is an elk mask and one is a raven mask, "Huh, these are interesting” he says and puts them back into the satchel.
Smoke, Whiskey and the old man climb back into the canoe and paddle off down the river until they come to the camp of "She who always lives on the coast." It is long after sundown when they make it to her camp and most people are asleep but they can hear beautiful singing coming from one of the teepees that is closest to the edge of the river …welcome to a place of magic…the singing draws you closer…oh it just brings tears to your eyes perhaps this place is not as bad as you have been told…

1 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 4 4 4 4 5 5 5 5 5 7 10 = 7 Successes
The call of the song is beautiful indeed, but Smoke remembers being warned. He focuses and throws his shielding magic up in an attempt to protect himself. The sirens song rips at his will but he is able to throw it off somehow. Fists clenched and eyes squinted he studies the camp and the teepees.
Whiskey starts to be drawn off the canoe and then remembers what the people along the river told him and he quickly puts his fingers in his ears and starts humming a tune.
Old man seems like he must be pretty wily too, ‘cause he has already stuffed his ears with some cattails and off he goes towards "She who always lives on the coast’s” teepee; chisel in one hand and…Well… dirty old man parts in the other. "I have something for you, darling” says the old man.
Whiskey closes his eyes and frowns as the old man enters the teepee where the sound of gnashing teeth can be heard even though you are trying to block it out SNAP SNAP CRUNCH CRUNCH the gnashing turns into moans as you hear the old man’s voice…which doesn’t sound so old anymore "Yeah that’s right I got something else for you too…”
Smoke looks at Whiskey, "Oh…what is happening there?" He stands up in the boat a little to try to get a better view.
"Dat is same sounds Coyote make when him is wit Alice…me tink dat old man is…well ju know." Whiskey says as he starts to get comfortable like this is something that happens all the time he closes his eyes and falls asleep…squishy sounds, moans and puppy growling and howling comes out of the teepee all night long…Whiskey snores…In the morning the two braves awaken to a very angry father yelling at the old man who looks about 30 years younger and a sheepish young lady who is trying to explain to her father that she has fallen in love and this is her new husband…finally the father gives up and invites his new "son-in-law" to come to his teepee that night for a celebration.
…as the father walks off you hear him mumbling about setting a trap in the teepee for his "son-in-law"…what kind of trap could it be…
Smoke stirs and listens quietly. "Hey Whiskey, this is gonna be complicated. I don't think the father likes the new boyfriend."
"Dat all right we jus tell…ju know me purty sure dat old man coyote…ju know…anyways, we jus tell him stay home an we go deal wit da trap. Whiskey says eyeing the elk mask that is sitting in the canoe, "Maybe we can use dis?"…so they wait for dark and Coyote and his new wife start doing their thing Bow chicka Wow wow and off Whiskey and Smoke go to…
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "The place of Battle"
The father’s teepee is obviously a trap with a big bear trap right out in front and lots of young braves with arrows pointed at the trap, oh whatever will our braves do? Whiskey looks at the trap and then at the elk mask and then back to the trap…
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "place of battle is a S physical melee combat skill soak"
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Muay Thai + Combat Pool: 6 vs TN 4 for "Soaking S":

Smoke wades into the opponents, this time not using a weapon, but kicking out with feet and throwing elbows. He ducks, dodging weapons and other forms of attack. He falls prone to the ground and lashes out at a leg, then spins back up on his hands and knees and forward rolls to get away from a mob closing in. He ends up on his feet running and then stops and charges back into them with a war cry.
«Auto-Judge[]» Whiskey Slim (#6879) rolls Wildcat + 5 (combat pool) + 5 (astral pool) vs TN 5 for "soaking S phys":
1 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 7 8 9 10 11 11 11 = 7 Successes
Whiskey runs into the middle of the braves and tosses the elk mask onto the trap SNAP and he screams "Oh no dey got old man Coyote in der trap." Then the kicking and punching starts; braves charge into the fray and try to tackle Whiskey to the ground, he punches, he kicks, he bites…
The great chief yells when the trap is sprung "We got the defiler of my daughter - let the other two go, tonight is a night for great celebration”…and the braves break off the attack, pretty happy to not have to continue…many walking away rubbing their hurt parts and a couple sliding off of Whiskeys back as he stands back up, not really bothered in the least by the three braves hanging onto him.
As the fight winds down, Smoke brushes himself off and rubs at a bruise on his cheek. He moves to stand near Whiskey.
The village brings out the drums and begins a celebration with dancing and smoking. Oh the fun that is had that evening…
The next morning everyone is amazed to see Coyote come out of "She who always lives on the coast’s" teepee. Oh the whispers that go around the village "Oh he must have great magic…Oh it must be true love that brought him back to life”…and all of this gets back to the big chief, who goes into a rage, how could he have escaped such a fine trap? He begins to hatch another plan. This time he goes to his daughter’s teepee and proclaims his love for his daughter and the greatness of her husband and requests that since Coyote has such great magic that he should come hunting with the chief and so they head off to go hunting
Whiskey looks over at Smoke and motions for him to follow and follow they do until they come to…
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "The place of fear"
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "This will be willpower vs D stun"
Smoke and Whiskey follow along on the trail behind Coyote and the big chief, it is a wonderful sunshiny day, they hike deep into the woods and underneath of a cliff then the big chief shoots an arrow and runs off chasing after something…they see him pointing down into a deep hole and he says to Coyote "go down there, son-in-law, and get our meat and we will take it home and have a great feast." Coyote crawls down in the deep dark hole to get the kill and the big chief with a mighty blow knocks down a stone that causes the whole cliff face to fall on Coyote and then runs off back to the village as rocks continue to rain down burying Coyote under tons of rocks and trees… do you have the courage to make you way over the falling rocks and trees to try and save Coyote…
«Auto-Judge[]» Smoke (#1419) rolls Willpower + 7 (Astral Pool) vs TN 5 for "Vs Fear":

2 2 2 2 3 5 5 5 10 = 4 Successes
Whiskey chases after Smoke hopping from boulder to boulder and hoping against all hope that neither one of them falls down the rock slide to their doom on the rocks below…they close the distance to where Coyote is buried trapped beneath a large tree with little room to maneuver
Whiskey digs around in the bag for the second magical mask and slides it down into the hole for Coyote who puts on the raven mask and turns into a bird which is much smaller than a coyote and flies up out of the tree trapping him and flies back towards the village…
Smoke balls up his fists after watching Coyote fly off and looks around for the father who caused all the problems. "That guy is just not right. He should let Coyote be with 'She who is always by the sea.’"
«Plot» Whiskey Slim says, "And the citadel is reached"
…and so Whiskey and Smoke clamber back across the boulder-strewn field and head back towards the village where Coyote and "She who always lives on the coast" are sitting down with the big chief in front of her teepee where they are invited to share a pipe and the hatchet is buried because obviously if the chief couldn't kill Coyote then he was a worthy son-in-law. Smoke and Whiskey are presented with magic masks made by "She who always lives on the coast" that will help them always be the person they need to be as they were such good friends to her beloved Coyote…Coyote stays with his wife…for a little while…
