Orktown Relief Delivery

GM: Orange
Players: Haldor, Orange
Synopsis: Orange got hired by the Sinners to deliver an arranged smuggling of VITAS/HMVV protection gear and vaccine from the CAS through Sinners' territory to Orktown. It's an unsual deal between the SInners and The Horsemen. Everything went well until Orange's van got ambushed by ghouls. That's where the scene starts. Orange makes an ad hoc recruitment of Haldor into the ongoing shadowrun. Both take some serious risks to get the supply out of the hands of ghouls and random pillagers in Orktown and deliver the whole shipment of medical supplies to the Horsemen.

Meeting at the Big House

The Big House, Orktown

Beating the humidity of the day, Haldor is leaning against the wall somewhere near what passes for an air conditioner in the Big House. He's sipping on a mug of synthahol while his piercing blue eyes idly scan the interior of the bar.

In steps a female norm which could probably count as some kind of middle-age punk, with orange hair and a purple leather jacket. The moment she steps over the doorstep it's pretty clear that she's NOT a frequenter. She seems to be cursing herself and her mirror shades dart from here to there, trying to spot any corner to hide in without lingering too long in the open. As ist happens, Orange picks Haldor as her target. Probably one of the smaller and less bulky specimen in the Big House. She moves directly towards him, trying to appear as if she would be meeting someone on purpose.

For his part, Haldor tries not to look too puzzled. He lifts his mug of synthahol to his lips and arches a brown eyebrow as he watches this human woman approaching him. Shoulders roll slightly, the lean ork squaring up professionally as he calmly, clearly greets Orange, "How's the scan, omae?"

"Yo, chummer. Five by five. - How's the booze been lately?" she steps next to Haldor, maybe trying to cool herself a little bit as well with this air conditioner thing. She scratches her nose and maybe she peeks at Haldor's drink. Hard to tell, with the sunglasses. "You mind if I stick around for a minute? I could use the cooling."

"Sure. Why'd I mind the company of a pretty chica?" inquires Haldor. His synthahol looks cheap and smells strong, though it's not troll-grade. Taking a quick swig of his beer, Haldor offers a tusky smile and a deferrent roll of his shoulders. "Right now? Booze is cold 'n' cheap. How much better can it get?"

Orange isn't sure if a flirting ork is a good or a bad option in that place, but it could be worse, definitely! "Yeah, probably right! Look, em, this might sound a little bit weird but… any chance you got a working cellphone or anything that builds a comms bridge out of this part of town?" Orange scratches her neck, trying a winning smile.

«Plot» Orange says, "You get what you see! Everything in order here!"

To be fair, Haldor isn't flirting too hard. Maybe it's an ork machismo thing. Haldor shrugs and pulls out a pocsec, offering it to Orange. "Sure. Signal ain't great down here, but… Best I got."

Orange seems to be relieved and gives a heavy sigh: "Damn, thanks man. I owe you one." She quickly operates the pocsec. "Signal's fine…" She dials and the call is answered…

Orange turns away from Haldor, but the conversation can be overheard - at least her part: "This is Orange, reporting a Foxrtrot Uniform at seven eighteen zero for cross twenty nine eight. It's Orktown southern part. The damn freight is lost. Everything went well. - Yes, one wounded and missing. The other one ran off. - I don't have that information." She lowers her voice further: "Look, it was the damn ghouls. I know how to drive. They jumped off a building, okay? This was not an amred transport, it was a damn blocade running. - I can't help it now. - No, no issues from them so far. I mean, the goods are burning in the field. The damn van is wrecked. I need a pickup at the Big House. Okay. Look, one more thing: This was understaffed, ok? What good is personal protecition gear if the creatures are already hanging around herer? If you want to push your goods to orktown you have to man up or you pay for the airborne transport option, okay? Right. Don't let me wait too long here."

Haldor sips his synthahol and minds his business while Orange is on the line. When she turns back around, Haldor shrugs a little bit and comments, "Anything good at the cookout?"

After the call is over, Orange quickly attempts to delete the call entry from Haldor's pocsec and hands it back.

Orange takes a deep breath, crosses her arms and looks around before she answers. "Medical supplies and personal protection gear against virus infections, all well done by now, I guess. The stuff got funneld in from the CAS through Sinner's territory, destination Orktown." She runs her hand through her sticky hair. "This shit virus is creeping in every hole."

"Do you know more about what we face?" inquires Haldor, his tone growing more rigid and formal. Those piercing blue eyes scan the interior of the bar, making sure no one's too close or paying too much attention.

"Damn I do. I was in pilot seat when a group of a bout six ghouls dived from a demolished building. They were…" she shakes her head, still in disbelieve, "tearing the light armor sheets on top away like tinfoil. They got inside the passenger cabin within twelve seconds. Something caught fire, I crashed the damn thing to get out with my bare life. I tell you, I've flown dark skies, but this shit was crazy. Some locals showed up right after the crash. I don't know what they did. Maybe they killed the bunch or got killed already."

Listening quietly, Haldor nods in understanding. "That seems… Abnormal for ghouls. Moreso than I would normally expect. Do you think they were intelligent instead of feral?"

"I can't tell, honestly. Ghouls are not my field of expertise. But what was odd is that they attacked a fast moving vehicle from an elevated ambush position. It was either pure aggression or they had really keen senses. Also, there was a decent sensor rig aboard of the van. They must've been sitting there in some kind of cover, I guess. Otherwise I'd have noticed."

"Yes," agrees Haldor, "That is why I asked." He frowns a little bit, clearly introspecting as he folds his arms across his chest and leans back against the wall. Brows furrowed, Haldor adds, "It would be fool hardy to go to the wreck and see if anything could be salvaged."

"Unless someone pays for recovered goods of course," she continues casually.

"Do you know anyone that would?" inquires Haldor, blue eyes shifting swiftly to fix on Orange's face.

"Well, Big Guy, who do you think I were talking to? I know, this doesn't seem like a professional job," she tucks at her purple leather jacket, "but it's seriously backed up by some players across the Warrens, right? I'm just the driver, but I'm pretty sure recovered goods are compensated."

Orange suddenly grins: "You're considering it, aren't you?"

"I am always considering," Haldor pauses a moment. He looks Orange seriously in the mirrorshades as he replies, "A challenge that benefits those in need around me."

Orange: "I tell you what: I go back with you, we see if we can recover any goods or one of the missing transport guards. The other one got injured, he's doomed. This stuff is already paid for by the Horsemen, so everything we recover will be a win for the seller and the buyer."

Haldor's nostrils flare at the response. Quietly he adds, "And the community."

She offers a fist bump: "Okay, let's do it then, damn it. I'm going by the callsign Orange."

The fistbump is returned. "You may call me Haldor."

The battlefield

Orange quickly leads the way out of the Big House and directly into the neighborhood. Abandones buildings, grasslands, unfinished construction sites quickly dominate the surroundings. Orange must have some kind of low-light vision as well, with her shades still on and the sun already behind the horizon. It's gloomy, the sky still colored in some shades of yellow, red and purple. While they move, Orange does reveal a Heavy Pistol under her jacket. And from her military trousers she produces two sets of basic protection gear: masks, gloves, some rebreathers.

Moving quickly, Haldor keeps pace with Orange easily. When they've exited the population centers of OrkTown and moved into the outer outskirts, he pulls Colt Manhunter from under his leather vest and behind his back. Orange produces safety gear, which the ork gratefully takes from her. The rebreather and mask go on first, the gloves coming next as he jogs along with the smaller human woman. As they near the location, Haldor slows down dramatically at Orange's signal for caution, keeping his Manhunter at the ready.

The distance from the Big House to where the van found its demise is big enough for a good run. Orange is breathing heavily when she waves for caution at the final corner. The situation they face is this: on a patch of open land, dotted with heaps of earth and covered with dried grass and brushes, like long forgotten piles of rubble or bomb craters, there is a half-burning van 'parked' against a concrete segment. The vehicle is about twenty meters away from the next street. A fight takes place around the vehicle. Some ganger-type orks are attacking the van, or someone inside. No, wait. SomeTHING inside or around the van! An inhuman, high pitched scream can be heard, shots are fired and it becomes more and more clear that whatever the 'attacking' group wanted in the first place, they are currently defending their sheer lifes against ghouls. The ghouls are quickly moving in crouching positions among the high grass and brushes, forcing the orks in melee combat. The burning van sheds an eerie light on the scene.

After a moment it also becomes clear, that this whole patch of grassland as well as some of the streets and buildings next to it is a moderate battle field. It's not only the van, but maybe it started the mess. Now there are several groups fighting within this area of about three hectare in size. Ghouls seem to have appeared from several corners and directions. This is a royal mess!

"Shit," Orange sums up the situation, "the van's still burning. That's unusual, but the crates are fire proof. Maybe one of the guards had some grenade with him that blew off", she wonders. "Well, the thing is this, the van is still operational. If we can make sure there is none of these beasts in the driver seat or back, I can set back and steer this wreck out of the field, at least. Every inch away from here helps. What do you think?"

"Hot drek," hisses Haldor. He flicks off the safety on his Manhunter, looking over at Orange. Nodding his head toward the van, Haldor inquires, "If we kill our way to the van, how long should it take to get the supplies out?"

Orange shakes her head but she can't help but to give a broad grin: "No way I'm going to unload this stuff there with all the choir boys hanging around. I'd try to get the van out. If that's impossible, we can try our best with one of the crates. They weight around 65 kilos." - "My hopes are that we have enough distraction right now, from all this em… mess going on here in the meantime," Orange adds.

"If you think it'll run, let's get it going," replies Haldor. He promptly starts hustling toward the van as quickly and quietly as his lean ork form will let him move.

Orange still can't believe what she's doing here, but she applauds Haldor's determination. With her weapon drawn and some military experience she follows right in his track, covering his flanks and back as good as possible. - Haldor's path to the van practically leads right into the area where a group of four orks are engaged in combat with maybe three or four ghouls. They would have to pass right through them, hoping that in this chaotic scenery, neither ghouls nor orks would care about another figure slipping through. But, honestly, this is a daring move.

When it comes down to it, Haldor is a straight forward ork. He motors quickly and silently, weaving through the melee with a speed and grace that one does not typically associate with orks. Keeping his heavy pistol at hand, Haldor keeps his head on a swivel.

Luckily, the orcs in the vicinity of the van are forced in melee, so they don't really make use of any firearms right now. Haldor slips through the mess like a shadow, unnoticed by a fighting pair and another injured ork who tries to spot a ghouls that just vanished in the darkness beyond the firelight coming from the van's back.

Orange, however, is not so lucky - or proficient. Halfway through the danger zone she spots a ghoul falling in line right behind her. "Shit! Enemy on six!" she hisses sharply towards Haldor.

First impulses are abandoned as Haldor lifts his Manhunter and takes aim at the ghoul coming up behind Orange. The ghoul's sudden appearance does break Orange's initiative in some sense. She tries an all-in dive towards Haldo, rolling past his left side and crashing into a pile of rubble. This saves her life, maybe, but it also leaves her exposed for everything to come. Good thing is, the ghoul now confronts Haldor!

The orange-haired Rigger just dove past Haldor for her life and came to a rough halt against a pile of rubble. This daring move cost her a good chunk of her momentum, but she lives for now. What next? Orange has her smartgun-rigged Ared Predator III ready, but after this full dodge, she decides to get back on her feet and be ready to get into the Ford van as soon as possible. While standing up, she tries to provide Haldor wih a tiny advantage by giving him verbal support and some brief tactical information.

This beast is eager for flesh. Haldor's flesh. If there was any doubt about the seriousness of the situation, it's become pretty clear at arm's length. Good thing is, breathing seems to be much harder now. The ghoul's breast pipes a whistling sound with every breath. This was a serious hit.

"Get the van going," calls Haldor over his shoulder while the ghoul is faltering. His piercing blue eyes lock onto the slavering beast still coming toward him, tightening his grip minutely as he adds, "I'll cover you." Promptly Haldor pulls the trigger again, hoping to replicate that second shot.

«Plot» Orange says, "This ends the combat turn immediately for now, but the situation around the van makes it very likely, that there will be other confrontations. But for the moment, Orange and Haldor can take a quick breath and continue with their plan"

Orange: "Fuck, too close but damn straight shooting; come on, check the back of the van, I do the driver seats. Be careful. Don't open the rear entry, use the sliding door…" quickly she shuffles behind the steering wheel and connects a fiber optic to one of her dtajacks behind her ear. Nervously but focused, she observes the movement around the van through the damaged front window. "I run a checkup, only four seconds…"

What Haldor can see without closer observation is that the van's rear is burning from the outside, as if covered with burning oil. The sliding door on the driver's side is open. Smoke is rising through the opening from within.

Without further observation is great. Haldor looks like he's about to shoot the ghoul in the head while it's on the ground, but pauses as his piercing blue eyes settle on the open sliding door. Flaring his nostrils, the ork jogs toward the open sliding door, keeping his gun aimed at the ground as he moves to inspect the rear of the van as if he didn't know what he was about to face.

The van's interior in the back is burned and charred. Smoldering plastic produces thick and toxic smoke. There is no movement at all in this van, so it seems to be alright to step closer for a more detailed look into the transport cabin. There are three massive crates fixed to metal rails on the floor. A disembowled, armored figure lies in one corner, heavily burned as well. Its security helmet and the whole chin were ripped from the head. Might have been a female or male ork. Probably one of Orange's escorts. It smells of charred flesh and lingering combustive agent, maybe from a grenade that exploded recently.

"Clear," intones Haldor as he surveys the van's interior as thoroughly as an ork can in the circumstances. Leaning into the van, Haldor reaches in to grab the corpse by the helmet and wrench the smoking husk out of the van. Quietly, Haldor murmurs something that may be a form of prayer while he's clearing the body from the back. Promptly, the ork climbs into the back and slides the door shut. "Let's go."

While Haldor approaches, Orange reports to the back through a small window: "We've burned tires on the rear axle, grinding metal there, also a breach in the dorsal armor and a serious loss of vehicle sensory input, but we can manage. Engine is still up, on fifty percent though." Finished with strapping herself into the Rigger safety seat, Orange now enters the van with full RAS override for Rigger control.

The Escape

The moment the engine roars up, all attention in the closer vicinity is caught by this prominent beacon. It's only a few seconds after, when the first unaimed shots are fired at the van. One hits the windscreen, two others the outer hull. A distorted speaker transmits Orange's surprisingly calm voice: "All hands on railings, brace yourself. We're moving backwards, straight line."

The engine kicks in! … and almost dies again. A loud metal skreacking comes from right under Haldor, where the axle's traction starts to protest. Luckily, the van has a front drive, and so the whole van starts to move against all odds, digging its way backwards out of the mud, rubble, and brushes, away from the concete wall segment it was parked until now. It's a shaky drive in the back, that's for sure. Unless Haldor stripped himself to a folding seat or a crate, he has to struggle in order to keep his body under control and ready for anything.

As commanded, Haldor grabs onto the nearest railings. He braces himself the best that he can, grimacing tuskily as the windshield takes still more bullet damage while Orange makes fast their escape. With the van shaking, rattling, and (mercifully) rolling in the intended direction, Haldor remains braced while he sets his jaw so that his tusks can really feel the vibration.

After a few meters, there is a loud, wet bumping sound against the burning rear entry of the van. Whatever it hit, it's caught under the tires and underfloor. Hopefully a ghoul, not a poor local ork… The van doesn't slow down, but another impact can be heard from above. Orange confirms the worst case via loudspeaker: "Blind passenger, topside! Can't identify! Watch the hull breach!" And indead, something makes its way to the torn open part of the van's roof. Since the sliding door is shut, the hole in the top has become the chimney for the thick, black smoke from the smoldering interior. Sight is reduced drastically, but still good enough to make out a figure lowering itself through the torn roof.

«Plot» Orange says, "If you agree we can treat your first action at 19 as delayed, so you could act at 15"

These ghouls are weird, decides Haldor as he shifts his way over toward the hole in the roof. Just close enough to get a clear angle on the figure he can make out trying to climb in from the roof. Up comes the Colt Manhunter again, the ork pulling the trigger yet again.

The ghoul, clad in what appears to be a torn leather jacket, without any trousers at all, struggles to stand up. A ghastly apparition, especially in this confined space. With its victim so close and trapped, it presses forward, ready to rend and gnaw.

It seems Orange is paying attention to what is going on back there; suddenly, the side-door slides open again.

"You heard the lady," growls Haldor as he lunges for the ghoul first. The heavy metal ork promptly attempts to do the only thing he can do in these tight quarters. Smash the thing's face in against one of the containers before Irish whipping it out of the sliding door that has conveniently slid back open. Hopefully that'll buff out.

«Plot» Orange says, "I think the only thing that applies is damage modifier, so the ghoul is on 7. Everythig else is negated in melee"

Feeling the ghoul's skull give on impact with the side of the van, Haldor whirls around and heaves the ghoul out of the open sliding door. He doesn't bother to watch and see if it gets back up again. Instead, Haldor moves to try closing the sliding door again.

The door slides back again. Problem solved! With a loud crack, the van hits solid pavement and Orange steers the wreck into a clumsy but stable u-turn since the handbrake lies in pieces some twenty yards away anyway: "Looking good, we're on the pipe! I get us some distance between us and this mayhem drek. You have a safe place here in the vicinity? We're still being followed."

"Nah. I ain't got a place," replies Haldor. He braces up again, growling to himself as he thinks. "You said the Horsemen were involved? Can't we just deliver straight to them?"

Orange replies: "The van won't make it to Saddle Rock, but I can try to get a relief. Can I have your phone again?" She slows down and leaves the VCR machine, looking back through the small window with a grin: "We actually made it, damn it. Good work."

Helpfully Haldor shoves his phone through the small window. "Call for a pick up then," agrees Haldor, "Good driving."

Orange clamps the phone between one shoulder and ear and makes the call: "Orange here, reporting in. I got help from local em… civilian. We secured the package, repeat, secured it. Need new rendevous point asap. Position is seven fifteen five for cross nineteen nine seven. Best thing is we meet with the client right away. Can they move to our position? We might have dogs on our heels. - Roger that. Over and out." She gives the phone back: "Horsemen are coming to us, I think. We just sit tight and keep the van moving through the back alleys here in this neighborhood. Thirty minutes and we're fine I think. - Oh and, Haldor, get one of those crates open. There should be some vaccine in there as well. Hopefully. I'd rather have one handy, actually."

«Plot» Orange says, "Alright, we can cut here! Thanks for this dynamic RP. Was fun!"
«OOC» Orange says, "That's good! I'll send the log in as usual. Would you be fine with having the Horsemen as a contact?"
«OOC» Haldor says, "Hell yeah."
