Haunted House

GM: Darius
Players: Darius, Fade
Synopsis: Darius and Fade go to investigate rumors of a haunted building- a long unused warehouse in the Ute sector- and find more than they were bargaining for.
Date: Monday, October 15, 2072, 7:09 PM

Darius has been contracted to investigate a 'haunted' building, a warehouse in the PCC district. Darius is dubious as to the nature of the problem as an actual spiritual presence, and so he has put out feelers on the trix to bring onboard someone with more… visceral talents. That's where Fade comes in. He's asked her to meet him at his shop, a legal enchanting and magic consulting shop in the Ute sector owned by a 'Mr. Hendel', to discuss the job. He informs Fade that the warehouse in question has been out of use for several years, caught up in beurocratic nightmare. He surmises that the 'haunting' is more likely to be some kind of paranormal animal infestation, or even squatters. In case of the latter, he advises bringing along something non-lethal if possible. A detailed plan of the warehouse is not available thanks to the beurocracy that has made his clients purchase of the building so problematic.

Darius will also introduce himself as 'Mr. Grey'
Fade doesn't ask too many questions; it is one of her better qualities. She has only just managed to recover from the bullet wounds that she'd taken in her last job. The idea that this is something which might be less likely to wind up with her full of lead is an interesting idea.

"I know nothing about magic." She explains, "And my non-lethal options are… limited." She doesn't go further into details, "I will go and collect my equipment and come with you. If we are being contracted, I assume there is no problem if I wear relatively obvious armor?"
Darius considers that a moment, "Hmm. How obvious? If it's something you can get a permit for, or wear without a permit, it should be fine. If you're thinking about bringing a military hardsuit and a riot shield, I would prefer you didn't." 'Mr. Grey' says, amusedly.
Fade shakes her head, though she doesn't seem to find very much amusing in it. "No." She says, "But I prefer to wear camo gear when possible. In this context, it should not raise too many questions. I dislike being … obvious."

Darius nods his head, "We shouldn't have any trouble, then. We'll meet at the warehouse and I will survey the site astrally. Then we can form a plan of attack, as it were." He informs her, and hands over the adress of the place. "Is there anything further you'd like to ask before we head out?"

The only response is a light shake of her head, and then the dwarf leaves.

Fade doesn't waste much time. She goes from the meet, to collect her equipment, and when she arrives at the warehouse, is wearing the camoflage gear and carrying a large duffel bag. She also, notably, is wearing a small metal disk on her throat which turns her voice into something more… mechanical.

Darius is dressed exactly as he was at the shop. A sharp corp-mage style suit, with a high collared single breasted robe. All in various shades of dark grey. "Good to see you again. I hope your brought a flashlight." he gestures towards the building, an electronic breaker box has been thoroughly smashed to pieces and is sparking faintly. "It seems our 'ghost' doesn't like lights." he smirks a touch.
Fade does indeed remove a flashlight from her pocket… though when she turns it on, it is unlikely that Darius can tell. "Thermographic." She explains, "Though I will have a look at the box. Appearances can be deceptive." Because hey, if she can jury-rig something to get the lights on, that will likely make the job easier.

The warehouse itself is a squat rectangular building, two stories tall. A shutter-style loading door is bolted shut, while a more standard door, presumably for visitors and staff, sits next to it- slightly ajar. The warehouse features a moderately sized external bay area, likely for trucks and the like, which is enclosed in a chain link fence. The security kiosk is unmanned, and the arm gate at the entrance seems to have suffered at the hands of vandals in the past.

The electronic breaker box seems thoroughly broken. The outer casing has been smashed in with blunt force, and a handful of cables appear to have been completely ripped out. Electriticy is arcing from an exposed connection into the case, making it dangerous to approach.

«OOC» Darius says, "You can attempt to repair it anyway, albeit at TN 6 (8 if you don't have a toolkit on you). Failure probably means an electric shock."

«Auto-Judge[]» Fade (#9097) rolls Electronics B/R vs TN 8:

«Auto-Judge[]» Fade (#9097) rolls 1 for "task pool":

«Plot» Darius says, "Fade attempts to repair the breaker box. This will take her 5 minutes in total. She will not be able to restore full power, due to missing wires and fuses. But she will be able to restore backup lighting."

Fade is not intimidated by the electricity. Knowing how to deal with electronics is a major part of her work. Darius might think that she's insane when she wanders over to the box, and jams her hand into it. Starting to connect disparate parts of metal, she pauses for a moment. "This will be a few minutes." She says. "Please ensure I am not killed by a ghost in the mean time."

«Plot» Darius says, "Essentially, this means the conditions inside will be 'dim light' instead of 'total darkness'."
«Plot» Fade says, "You mean minimal or partial light?"
«Plot» Darius says, "Partial."
«Plot» Fade nods.

Darius nods his head at the dwarf when she gets to work, "Of course. I'll assense this outside area while you work, before I take a closer look astrally." He might as well be talking greek to a mundane, of course.

«Auto-Judge[]» Darius (#9060) rolls Intelligence vs TN 5 for "Assensing the warehouse. Background count of 1 in this area.":
1 3 8 8 11 11 = 4 Successes

Fade essentially tunes out Darius' words. Her augmented brain helps her make the connections necessary to get the lighting on in some sort of way, and she unzips the bag. Her sword, her pride and joy, is slung over her shoulder, and she produces a very advanced-looking bow, into which she notches - in deference to Darius' preferences - a blunt-headed arrow. "Let me know when we wish to advance."

Darius's eyes glaze over a moment, as he switches his sight to observe the astral ebbs and flows around the Warehouse. He spends a few moments glancing around the place and hrms to himself. "Well. I spotted a couple of astral signiatures floating around. Literally. So squatters seems less likely all of a sudden. I'm not quite sure what they are, though. Possibly spirits. Certainly magical in nature." he informs Fade. "Keep youe eyes peeled."

Fade accepts the update with the same stoic demeanor she'd accepted everything else. The arrow is slid out and replaced in the quiver, and a different, barbed-tipped arrow is slotted in its place. She doesn't… actually say anything, though she does nod.

Darius nods in response, "I'll hold off on scouting astrally. If these creatures are magical as I suspect, they will be able to see me as well as I can see them." he informs her, "So let's just head on in. I saw two signiatures out here, and another two inside."

Fade nods a second time, and naturally assumes that Darius wants her to head in first. So… she moves to do just that, going towards the door, and pausing to listen for a moment before she opens it, as carefully as she can with her bow out.

The door opens up into a short corridor, with another door at the end. The lighting in this room comes from a single 'exit' sign above the door you just came through flanked by a pair of low intensity tube lights. It's dim, but workable. No signs of hostiles.

"Wait here a moment." Darius tells Fade then, and sets to work conjuring a watcher spirit to warn him of anyone coming in behind them.

«Auto-Judge[]» Darius (#9060) rolls Conjuring vs TN 4 for "Summoning F3 Watcher Spirit":
3 4 5 5 7 7 = 5 Successes

Fade keeps the nasty-looking arrow notched, though lowered, as she steps forwards. She naturally keeps to the left as much as possble, though she's glad she got the lighting on. This is an enemy that neither of the yet can claim to understand… and lacking that knowledge makes her nervous.

«Auto-Judge[]» Darius (#9060) rolls Charisma vs TN 4 for "Soaking 4L Drain, +1 BG count":
2 2 3 4 4 5 = 3 Successes
«Plot» Darius says, "Drain fully soaked, I have 5 services from an F3 watcher spirit."
«Plot» Darius says, "I will command it to watch the door, and warn me of anything or anyone coming in."

Darius holds out a hand, and gestures with the other one. Dust and debris from the ground around him swirls and coalesces into a globe in his palm. "Watch this door- warn me if anything aproaches." Darius commands it, and the ball of junk bobs up and down a moment before dissapearing from sight. Darius gestures to the next door, "Ladies First."

Fade eyes the spirit that has been summoned with, obvious mistrust. But she doesn't voice her suspicion. Instead, she nods her head, and takes point, starting to walk ahead at a calm, measured pace - mostly so as not to leave Darius behind.

Darius walks behind the dwarven Ninja. He's not particularly stealthy, he is, in fact, walking rather casually. Typical, arrogant mage, perhaps. He's not even carrying any obvious weaponry.

«Plot» Fade says, "Okay, I'll advance until we hit the warehouse proper. :)"

The next room is more open- a sort of central hub with four exits- the one they just came through, one to a small office, and two leading off to various ground level storage units.

Fade halts her position in the center of the room, and looks to Darius - after all, he seemed to have a vague notion of where the targets seemed to be.
Darius notes, "Two of the signiatures seemed to be in the loading bay, that way." He gestures to the right. "The other two are wandering around the edges of the upstairs area, which seems to be largely open plan. The other two were outside, both around the back when I first saw them."

Fade nods once more, and advances to the right. In her, limited experience with magical phenomena, when one starts to deal with one, the others flock to it. Therefore, it would be best not to begin in an open area.

«Auto-Judge[]» Darius (#9060) rolls 3 vs TN 4 for "Mystery Roll":
4 4 5 = 3 Successes

Darius acquiesces with Fades decision. The door leading to the storage rooms and loading bay, to the right, is old. It creaks when it is opened. There is a sudden, feral roar followed by clattering metal down the dark hallway. "…that did not sound like squatters at all." Darius comments.

Fade's eyes narrow, and she turns in the direction of the roar. She finally speaks. "No." Which, was obviously worth confirming, before she starts in that direction. She's taking it slow; assuming that the monster will know they are here and with no desire to allow it to get the drop on her.

Meanwhile, on the astral plane, formless, glowing orbs are drifting towards the source of the sound. The things Darius saw earlier- he's not perceiving right now. His Watcher catches sight of one, but before it manages to warn the mage, one of the orbs 'sucks' it up, and seems to swell slightly in size.

Darius does frown, slightly, though. "The watcher just dissapeared." He comments. "Not killed- just dissapeared." he clarifies. That was unusual.

Fade frowns slightly, and, after a moment's thought, she slides her bow onto her back, and instead draws the sword. Darius' confusion tells her that they are being ambushed; and she will feel better knowing that if something tries to tear her face off, she can eviscerate it swiftly.

The hallway features many doors- some open, some locked- leading to 5x5m rooms, all of them apparently empty. The entrance to the loading bay consists of a pair of double doors. The roar comes again, closer now. The doors burst open, smashed off their hinges completely. A hulking creature, stooped so that its head doesn't scrape against the ceiling, covered in horns and plates of armor. An eeirie glow comes from the room it emerged from.

Fade reacts almost instantaneously, reaching into one of the pockets on her outfit and slinging a small razor-sharp disc at the roaring creature, before her hand regrasps her katana. The disc is flung wild, spinning off into the distance and skittering harmlessly against the wall.

«Plot» Darius says, "Creature takes M damage, and as the spell is light-based, also suffers a +1 TN on all actions this round."

"That's a Dzoo-Noo-Qua!" Darius warns Fade. "Aim for the head!" he adds and then holds out a hand. He begins murmuring in some ancient dialect of Aramaic, and gestures with his outstretched hand. Light shines deep within his eyes, building and coalescing into a tangible beam which projects forth, searing across the creature's torso leaving smoking, blackened trailes. The creature shields its eyes and recoils at the intense light, and lets out a furious howl of rage.

«Plot» Darius says, "It will charge at Darius, perceiving him as the greater threat. It uses its whole turn moving putting it in melee range with Darius (but unable to strike this round)"
«Plot» Fade says, "I will step up to it and slash."

The creature's nostrils flare and it punches the wall (knocking loose a fist-sized chunk of debris) and then charges down the hallway towards the pair of them.

«Auto-Judge[]» Fade (#9097) rolls Edged Weapons + Combat Pool: 6 vs TN 4:

«Plot» Darius says, "My bad. Got only 1 success on the melee roll, meaning TN was 11 in soak. No change to result."

Fade is tuning Darius out again. She's also speaking in Japanese, to try and center herself. "A Samurai does not fear death." She whispers, and steps around the side of the hulking monster. She can't very well reach the head, but she does manage to carve a deep gash into its side with her sharpened weapon. Quietly, she's surprised that it didn't go all the way through; Trolls are usually not /this/ hard to cut.

As soon as the gash is cut, the flesh bubbles and sizzles and… begins to knit itself back together again in a gruesome display of viscera. The creature does not bleed profusely, like most beings would, but dribbles bubbling, viscous ichor from the wound.

Fade's dance of death is a disturbing one. The little Samurai is a blur of motion amongst flailing fists and stomping feet. In the end, the blow which strikes home truest is directly up and through the chest cavity, spearing the heart and tearing much of the front open in a grizly display of violence not at all consistent with her usually calm and quiet demeanor.

And still the thing is moving. Thrashing around as it topples to the floor. "Hmph."

"The head. You have to destroy the brain!" Darius reitterates. The creature's flesh is beginning to repair itself already, chest closing back up, ribs fusing back together. Irregular, bony crowths replacing the armor that was cleaved in two. Darius gestures againm a different pattern, a different phrase in Aramaic. His throat swells at the end of his incantation, and he opens his mouth wide. He spits a gob of sticky, sizzling grean acid at the creature. It howls in pain as the acid burns into the re-knitting flesh and the armor plates. But the flesh regenerates faster than the acid burns. Still, it keeps the creature down for a few moments.

Fade is good, but even she isn't confident she could actually destroy the head whilst the creature is thrashing around trying to crush her. Instead, she slides her sword back into its scabbard, and shrugs her bow back off her shoulder. She doesn't particularly like leaving Darius to deal with the thing, even for a second, but if she's going to have a chance of making such a challenging shot, she needs to be outside its range.

Darius wastes no time, a faint breeze surrounding him now as he continually chants in increasingly agitated Aramaic. He gestures wildly, his throat swells once more, and he spits forth a powerful stream of acid directly into the creature's face. It thrashes and roils in pain as the acid bores through the molecular structure of flesh and bone alike, seeping through the hole left through the arrow to destroy sensitive brain matter inside. It releases one last ear-shattering howl, as blood foams from its mouth. It's several moments before it stops thrashing so wildly.

Fade puts her bow back, and redraws her sword so that she can, carefully, clean it off. She regards the thrashing beast with a vague curiosity, before she lets herself look at Darius. "That was distinctly unpleasant." She says, and, with a hint of accusation, adds. "I find it difficult to believe that it would be mistaken for a spectre, either."

That Eirie glow seems to answer Fade's question- a glowing spirit drifts through the wall and, seemingly, ignores the mage and the ninja. It floats down to the creature, gargling and thrashing, and despite being a massless, formless glow 'nuzzles' against it's face. The pale blue glow dims slightly. And then grows in intensity, shifting hugh to red. "That… on the other hand…" Darius comments. Another one comes drifting in through the ceiling, and two more drift in from behind them.

Fade narrows her eyes at the glowy "This." She says, "Is your department." Her sword is drawn… because, well, spirits are a dangerous thing she doesn't understand, but she /has/ killed one by hitting it. Once.

«Auto-Judge[]» Darius (#9060) rolls Paranormal Animals vs TN 4:

Darius holds his hand out towards Fade. "Careful." He murmurs, and begins to back away until one comes through the ceiling. "Shit!" mutters Darius in an urgent whisper. "These things are will-o-wisps. They eat… well. Souls." he informs her.

Fade's jaw clenches, and she shifts her grip on her katana, raising it point-upwards. She does not, however, say anything else. Because unless Darius has a better idea… her options are still limited to 'hit it and hope for the best' or 'flee'. And she has no intention of fleeing.

The wisps go red, one by one, as they draw closer. Apparently all reacting the same way to the large troll creature's death. One of them seems larger than the others. "Even a mundane can destroy them, through unarmed combat and force of will. Your weapon will slow them down, but they will soon reform." he tells her. "I can banish them… but only one at a time. And I'll be vulnerable." They become even more hostile, and are now clearly closing in on the pair.

On the astral, Darius and the creature's Aura are locked in battle- a beam of essence between them. Darius overcomes the creatures resistance after a few moments, and his essence envelopes it and crushes it, forcing it back to its native metaplane. In the physical world, the creature begins shaking violently and fading before it simply 'pops' out of existance.

Fade is quietly impressed with Darius's display. Not that she has any clue what is going on; this could be as easy as popping soap bubbles for all she knows. Whatever the case, she throws out another shuriken, hoping to dissuade the creatures from approaching further. It does not work.

The creatures once mor elash out at Darius with those Pseudopods of light, flailing at him. Darius backsteps, deflecting blows launched his way the whole time. He might be a novice Ninjituist at best, but at least he's got SOME training.

Fade is a far more accomplished melee specialist, but whilst her whirling style might succeed in slashing through the incoming tendrils of light, there is nothing for her sword to find purchase on and thus the blade slips clean through.

Darius scowls a bit as he stays on the backpedal- the creaures might be trivally weak for Fade, but they are actually stronger and more skilled in close combat than Darius. Darius does have the advantage of being able to do this, though: One of them swings for him again, and he punches the incoming pseudopod. On the astral, his aura projects itself once again, drilling a hole straight through the creature's own and causing it to burst, dissapating another one.

Fade continues to dance amongst the lights. It is, strange, fighting an enemy that she can not physically hurt, but nevertheless which threatens death with a touch. Her skill is far in advance of theirs, however, and her senses guide her through the motions as though she is fighting the wind itself. The dwarf is as silent as her adversaries as she completes the motions, providing the cover that Darius requires to complete his task.

Darius keeps his back to Fade as they two of them circle in the group of lights, doing his best to repel his attackers between bouts of magic, crushing them one by one. Eventually, the last of the spectres fades. Darius, drained from his spellcasting earlier and defeating the spectres, slumps against the wall and wipes sweat from his brow. "Well. Most certainly not squatters." He admits.

"I'll inform my client the contract is done- you can meet me at the shop again for your share." Darius tells Fade. "I'm impressed. Most mundanes would not so easily keep their wit about them when fighting ghosts and demons."

Fade slides her katana back into the scabbard, and nods her head once. "My ancestor's spirits watch over me." She says, "I have little fear for what any earthly spirit may attempt to inflict upon me." Is it true? Well. In all likelihood, her ancestors would reject her out of hand, despise her just as the rest of her kind do. But it is a pleasant thought, and one she chooses to believe, as she walks away. She'll be by to pick up her share, eventually
