Players: Vollo, Vixen, Kensai
Synopsis: The runners are hired to deliver a time-senstivie package to New Orlens.
Date: 2-10-83
Into the club walks a harried looking woman in her late fifties, wearing a simple green dress that falls all the way to the floor under a set of robes set off with various arcane symbols. "Kitigawa!" She says, hurrying past everyone else in the bar to reach him. "I have need of you. You said you would help. You -promised-."
"Morwenna-san?" He asks, bewildered. "How did you find me?"
"Silly man your aura leaks all over the place. You are too powerful and too conflicted by half. Meet me in my laboratory! As soon as possible!" She makes motions with her hands and then turns and walks right back out the way she came.
…and then disappears in the doorway as if she were never there!
Kensai is already rising from his seat. "Maybe," he says. "I don't know. She is one of the researchers at the Wellness Center, where I volunteer… she's been doing some… experiments lately. I promised to help her out." He looks towards the door. "Must have been an astral projection," he mutters. "Come on." He looks at the pair and frowns. "My mustang only seats two. Someone else have a ride?"
"I have my land rover." Vollo says, "I can follow you."
Vixen nods, "I'll ride with you Kensai."
Vixen grabs her duffel bag of goodies out of her own car before climbing into Kensai's mustang. She isn't going to be caught without her gear again.
Vollo's vehicle is jam packed with stuff. A lot of stuff he diesn't need, but some stuff that might be useful.
The ride isn't too bad - quickly out of the city and to a space more decent and green: not near Fort Lupton but closer to boulder. He eventually drives up a small narrow drive to a small villa hidden by trees and a hill, with a small stream turning an old-fashioned water wheel. "This is the place," Kensai says, parking next to a three-wheel atv. "Morwenna spent a fair bit of time as a magical consultant. You know, where the real money is. Come on I'll show you to the lab."
Vixen looks around with interest. Her eyes happy with the view and the fresh air. "Reminds me of home." She notes and follows Kensai out of the car. Her eyes sweep the area for security and threats.

Vollo pulls up and parks flipping on all the surveillance gear and then locking the land rover by voice control. "Edgar keep me in the loop." He moves around to where the others are and adjusts his holsters and the blade at his side.

There is little movement around the area - unless you count the dozen or so black cats patrolling the area, or the heron seeking food in the stream… Kensai walks past the front door and toward a small courtyard, where one more figure can be seen - an elderly japanese man, sitting on a bench, watching a koi pond and smoking a pipe.
"She is inside," the man tells Kensai in heavily accented english, gesturing with his head. "She is impatient."
"It's not a short drive, Yigami-sensei," Kensai says.
"Ah. You know that. I know that. She probably know that. But you know how she is whe she has an idea in your head."
Vixen follows Kensai with her head on a swivel. She listens to the back and forth between Kensai and the old one but simply provides backup for whatever trouble there might be. She's not really expecting that here in this place there will be battle but Vixen only lets down her guard when she's sure of the company she keeps. And the word Experiment and lab are a catch phrases that are a little close to home.
Vollo gives the old man a bow as he passes.
One of the many black cats will take a liking to vollo and follow him in, taking a clear liking to the fuzzball.
Kensai goes through a sliding glass door - which actually appears to be four inches thick - into a well-lit lab full of bubbling beakers, self-actuating abacuses, a variety of glowlamps shining on dozens different plants, and other such marriages between technology and magic. Morwenna is here, though not dressed as nicely as her astral self, instead in a pair of footy pajamas with black cats for feet and a shawl made of shimmering silk. "Good, finally," she says, and then gestures towards a container the size of a shoebox. "There it is!" She continues. "Go on ahead and take it. You don't have much time! It's only good for so long!"
Vixen Blinks as she looks around at the lab and then an amused expression is quickly masked as she takes in how the Morwenna is dressed. Her eyes move to the container that she is gesturing at and she arches a brow. But she maintains her professional demeanor and lets Kensai do the talking. He likely knows what is in the container.
Vollo smiles at the cat and steps in close to see what the lady is talking about.
The case is a made of some kind of aluminum-esque metal, with obvious hermetic seals (mundane ones, not magical), and a simple metal handle.
"I… have no idea what you're talking about."
She rolls her eyes. "You're wasting time. I've told you all this already." She frowns. "Or have I told you now? Time is confusing. But fine, I will tell you. AGAIN. For the first time." She points. "That has three vials of nectar taken from approximately three hundred Mana Lily blossoms." She points at the plants under the gro lights.
"Mana lilies?" Kensai asks.
"Yes, mana lillies. I invented them. Don't be dense you're wasting time. My colleague Marie has to have those to begin her stage of the experiment. They are -only- good for another twenty four…" she checks a chronometer. "Twenty three hours."
Kensai shakes his head. "So she can pick them up?"
She glares daggers at him, like he's some kind of dolt. "She's in New Orleans."
Vixen glances at Vollo and mouths the words, 'Road trip.' And a thumbs up sign.
Vollo blinks and nods. Then he begins to calculate time and distance.
«Plot» Kensai says, "by today's travel, driving to boulder would take 20 hours. 1300 miles."
"That is 1300 miles or about 19 hours."
"I don't know who your friends are," she says. "But handsome kitty elf actually has a brain. That's with no stops for gas, flying right through the pcc border with no slowdown, etcetera etcetera. And no before you ask flying isn't an option. They cannot go much higher above sea level than they are now without becoming unstable."
Vixen nods, "Well good thing I have a fast car."
Vixen dropped Silver Harley Valkyrie.
Vixen dropped Silver Porsche Winter <Chmmy>.
Kensai sighs. "You really want me to make that trip?"
Morwenna looks at him. "Listen. You want me to put in a good word with you with the center, so you can continue your studies? Then you do this for me." She looks at the others. "I will speak to my colleague. She may have some money to offer upon arrival."
Vixen has made that particular road trip before and knows how long it will take. "We should swing by Narnia and pick up one of my faster cars." She nods, "And my bike too I think." She nods, "Wonder what the record is?" She mutters and does a quick little google search about world record land speeds.
The woman waves it off. "Just take it and go," she says. "The job needs doing. This could be an incredible breakthrough in the field of experimental parabotanical herbiculture."
"ANd I can leave Edgar at narnia to be safe." Vollo says.
Vixen nods and mentions to Morwenna on the way out. "I have the largest greenhouse in Denver and it's guarded by a free spirit. It isn't far from here. If you want to grow plants in a more natural environment that is." She makes her offer off the cuff. Not really expecting an answer. To Vollo's question she nods, "No where safer."
As they're leaving, the elderly japanese man looks at them. He has risen to his feet, and is looking in the koi pond. "Kitigawa-san," he says. "Bring your friends over here. I know my wife wants you out in a hurry, but this will be just a minute."
Vollo looks at the old man curiously, glancing to Kensai and Vixen.
Vixen pauses as the old man speaks, shrugs and follows Kensai to speak to the old man. She doesn't look particularly impatient but somewhat curious. She studies the old man without being blatant about it.
He waves them over with a smile, and bows to them both. "I am Yimagi Sugo," he says. "It is an honor to make your acquaintance." He looks down at the koi pond, and then back to the companions. "I understand you are heading south for my wife? Yes? Good. If you could do me a task, while you are there. I have a friend that fishes on an island there… he was having some trouble with something. I could tell, but he would not explain what. Could you check up on him? He has gone quiet."
Kensai looks at the others. "I think we can probably make that happen," he says, dubiously, but willing to help. "I do have duties to return to."
He bows. "Thank you, Kitigawa-san. I will be in your debt."
Vollo nods and asks for the details of which island and who the man is. He keeps track of it on his MEIII
«Plot» Kensai says, "Azure Reef Island. Captain Jean Claude de LaFayette."
Vixen nods and gives a bow, "It shouldn't be too much trouble to check up on your friend. We will be honored to assist." As the mission parameters start expanding she sighs and now it's time to let Pauly know the score. She'll suggest that he grab Santero and take the yacht and meet her in Miami. But he might have better ideas.
Narnia Glade isn't that far from Boulder. Once you pull into the driveway she points to the silver porsche and the silvery Valkyrie. "They are all fueled up and ready to go. Let me grab some provisions, and I gotta make a call. She nods, "Take your bathroom breaks now. Any last minute requests?" As she rushes towards the house. A few minutes later she is loading up the trunk of the porsche with a duffel bag, into the passenger car goes a backpack filled with food rations, water bottles and a large thermos. Dressed in her biking leathers, her holstered Ares and two sets of keys. She tosses the keys to Vollo. She's seen Kensai drive." She winks. "The bike is faster than the car. But I'll keep pace with you."
Vollo takes the land rover Edgar to Narnia. He programs the defense system and anti-theft system and then packs his personal gear that he is taking with him on the road trip. (See current gear tab) He gets his identification in order for the border crossing and then packs several other small backpacks of gear. He is ready and looks at the porsche, and begins to load up.

Kensai grins as he sees Vollo's blades. "We stop off at my place," he says. "And I will get my own. Perhaps we have a rematch, one of these days. I could carve a bokken."
His home is in the CAS, so picking up his gear is easy enough.
They start down the road, under the clear sky. Many miles pass, the mountains slowly fade to shadows on the horizon.
Kensai is sitting in the passenger seat, watching the sky, then watching the plains. "The size of this country is stunning," he says. "Look at this. All this space. As far as the eyes can see… and the sky is so big."

«OOC» Kensai says, "all right. *checks map* probably want a gas stop at about 3 and a half hours at that speed."
«OOC» Vixen nods. Which highway are we on again?
«OOC» Vollo says, "US 287 south"
«OOC» Vixen says, "300 miles therabouts. Amarillo?"
«OOC» Kensai says, "after a stop at CyberExxon, do you switch driving duties?"
«OOC» Vixen says, "Yes. I think it's best if we do that."
Vixen opens up the throttle and accelerates to a cool 180. Staying slightly ahead of the porsche and using her comm to warn of any potholes in the road.
Vollo drives initially staying at just over 108 miles an hour. He feels the wind whipping through his hair, and his heart lifts as the engines roar and they fly through the cold Denver air. The stars are out and bright, twinkling through the night like a scattering diamonds across a blue-black blanket.

Clear sailing for so long. Big skies, long, straight roads - endless, endless miles. They stop at the CyberExxon, get big drinks, cheap rest stop food, empty bladders, and keep on going.
Drivers switched, Kensai takes over the bike. As he settles into the metaphorical saddle, he runs his hand over the smooth lines of the silvery combat bike. "You're a beauty," he whispers to it, stroking a metallic panel as one would stroke the mane of a horse. "Carry me well?"
The open road is different on a bike. If he thought the space was wide from the inside of the porsche, even with the top down - experiencing it on the back of a motorcycle was different. There was nothing between him and the vastness, no protection from the elements except what he wore, and he could feel the engine beneath it as well as hear the harley's distinctive roar.
The miles fall behind the runners like leaves in the wind - and it was not until somewhere south and east of Amarillo that they see the smoke rising, and another mile after that before you hear the gunfire
And then there's the explosion.

Vixen is taking her rest time in the passenger seat. Vollo is riding ahead on the bike. As soon as Vixen becomes aware of the problem ahead, she keys her comm. "We should pull over and lets see what's going on."

At this distance - at the edge of sight, maybe 10 miles - there's a turned over tractor-trailer with people around it. You think you see some bikes, too, and you can definitely hear the weapon fire.
Once Kensai pulls over Vixen hops out of the car and grabs her duffel bag. Its filled with a tangle mangle of crap, but rummaging around she locates her binoculars. Standing up on the seat to get a bit more elevation she scans the highway ahead to see if she can get more clarity on situation.
Commlink-Silver> Vixen sends, « Well it looks like a truck heist. Bikers and the truck's jacked. We got two choices. Avoid it or stop it. »
Vollo turns the motorcycle around and circles the porsche a little to come up alongside.
Commlink-Samurai V> Kensai steps out of the car, too, looking down in the distance. "I cannot see what you see," he says. "But perhaps I can see a little more." He looks towards the sky, and then down the road, and then at the land around him - and he starts chanting in archaic japanese.

Vixen watches through the binoculars for a bit telling them what she sees then say's, "If we get involved I'm going to want the bike." She nods to Vollo, but we could just drive a bit through the desert and go around this whole shitstorm." Though she looks a little unsettled by the idea of the dodge.
Vollo pulls around next to the car and hops off leaving the motorcycle for Vixen.
Kensai's prayers finish, and there's a stirring of dust, and soon there's a small woman, a little taller than a dwarf, made of blown leaves and prairie dust. Kensai bows deeply to her. "Honored Kami of the plains - thank you for answering my prayer. There is danger up ahead - red-violence, spilling over into the astral, i'm sure. Can you go look at for me, and report? I want to know the aggressors and the attacked, and the presence of any magic-users among them. Thank you."
The spirit bows back - though the bow is much more shallow - and disappears, leaving only a trail of dust in its wake.
Kensai watches it goes, and then turns back to the others. "I will retrieve my rifle from the trunk, as well as my katana. My opinion on this matter is clear - there is no room in this world for bandits."
Vixen nods and exchanges places with Vollo on her bike. She places her security helmet on and nods, "OK. Anyone want to ride shotgun with me? Should we flank them?"
Kensai walks over to Vixen. "I will ride, if your steed will bear me," he says. His demeanor is… shifted a little, since summoning that spirit. He's not as stooped-shoulders as he's been in recent months, not as weighed down by the buckets of blood he's spilled for a criminal daimyo. He seems older, sterner - more proud, more confident, and if you squint you can almost see someone else's face interposed after his in moments. His Ares alpha is now slung across his back, but both swords are now worn, too.
At that moment, the dust stirs again, and the small kame is among them. "Five," she says. "Four against one. Was two, but one lies dying. Two men armed with modern-day muskets. Another, huge one, has a hammer as tall as vixen-sensei. A shaman lurks by, servant to horse - but a heart as black as a nightmare's."
Kensai says, "Thank you. Remain nearby, in case I have need of you."
«Plot» Kensai says, "1 service left for the prairie spirit."
Vixen nods to Kensai, "There's room." Then to Vollo. "Get within firing range. Try not to get any bullet holes in Chammy's baby." She nods, "Kensai. You focus on that shaman. I'll get you within stabbing range." She nods. "Lets go be heroic and shit."
Kensai seems thoughtful. "Get me close enough, i'll engage the troll. The shaman is -" He frowns, concentrating on something being said in a place the others can't here. "Nearby. There will be an actual mounted rider not far away from the spot. That's her."
Vollo moves around to the trunk and switches out some equipment. Then he gets in the driver's seat and starts creeping forward, trying to time it right for when Vixen charges on the bike.
Gunfire echoes across the plains - whoever's still alive in there is putting up a fight.
Commlink-Silver> Vixen guns the engine and Kensai can almost feel the G's as the bike shoots forward leaving the porsche in the dust. She'll be distracting enough that they won't even see the porsche until it's too late. "Hold on."

«Plot» Kensai says, "three motorcycles are arranged on one side of the truck (which is on fire). Two gunmen are on the ground, firing the occasional burst - the troll is on top of the truck, approaching the cab. Meanwhile, a roto drone floats around, releasing timed burst of light machine gun fire at the gunmen, forcing them to keep their heads down - but not the troll?
Finally, you can both see her, mounted about 70 meters away from the fighting, her painted mustang standing on a small rise, is a woman in tribal leathers holding a long, scoped rifle. She throws out one hand, and a lightning bolt slashes across the sky - narrowly missing the flitting drone."

But last she checked shamans were still mortal and this one will feel her pain.

As vixen closes, Kensai slowly rises, balancing himself on the back of the motorcycle. He puts a hand just gently on her shoulder as he gets ready, waiting… waiting… then he tenses his legs and SPRINGs into the air, turning a somersault mid-air to make sure he can plant his feet as he does. There's a heavy -whump-, and he's there, waving his arms for a moment as relativity almost ruins him… but he takes control of himself, and with a slow, calm motion turns to face the troll, calling out a challenging cry before slightly lowering himself and putting a hand on the hilt of his katana.

Vollo drives in close to where the gunners are set up and fires four shots into the side of the first man. He dodges and rolls out from beneath the hail of bullets. There is a little blood, but this first gunner is on drugs and seems to resist most of the damage he dealt.
Vixen directs her bike off the highway and into the open field once Kensai jumped like a ninja off the bike. It takes a lot of her concentration and asks a lot of the sleek beast of steel and chrome, but it performs admirably and she readies her weapon and shouts a war cry into the wind, preparing to take her shots.

The silver haired runner has lost count of the many lives she's snuffed using this gun. But one thing stands out for sure, whatever she has taken aim at is now dust and shadow. Her weapon barks in her hand and takes a chunk of flesh from the woman's shoulder. Blood sprays behind the woman. Vixen accelerates pushing her bike its limits, skidding through the mud and flesh of the earth on her own steel horse.

The shaman is good. She slips off the back of the horse with a motion as easy as falling water, and even as she does, she drops to a knee, lifts her aim, and squeezes off a round. Her shot is -almost- on target, but Vixen's moving too fast - and she doesn't appear to have the same experience with movement her compatriots do.

Vollo pulls his trigger as fast as he can, aiming at the first gunner. His eyes move to the second gunner and he prepares to shoot him as well.

On the top of the truck… the troll with his enormous hammer comes right for Kensai, taking advantage of his enormous reach to gain a massive advantage - the hammer comes down like a comet, unstoppable, irresistible.
But this isn't kensai's first rodeo. He barely seems to move, but the hammer whizzes past him, and then his sword is flashing from his scabbard with the speed of a striking cobra. It's a perfect blow, flawless iajitsu, but it finds tough troll boney deposits and his blade skitters off, leaving only a narrow cut that the drugged-up troll barely seems to notice… but that's not all. Kensai moves past the troll, changing position, using his free hand to set aside the trolls arm and even use him as leverage for the spin… he turns, now a half step behind the troll, swinging his katana with both hands right into the back of its neck… and between the second and third vertebrae with a surgeon's precision. The troll falls, and its head rolls off the truck to roll to the side of his fallen companion.

That's when the drone overhead speaks - its deadly machine gun centering on the last gunman, who, having focused all his attention on Vollo, is left unable to dodge. There's a roar like peeling thunder, and the gunman is torn apart by explosive-tipped bullets that send bits of gore and concrete spinning through the air.

The shaman lefts the detonator higher. "I came here to destroy this truck," she says. "Withdraw your people so I can wipe this poison from the land! Gaia weeps! Will you deny her succor…" she looks back up at the sky, as if remembering something, and suddenly kicks her rifle toward Vixen. "Kill the drone!" She says. "Kill it!"
Vollo slides up to the door and tests his R6 maglock card against the vehicle's alarm system.

Vixen nods, "Tell you what chica. You can blow this truck up. Just let us get the poor guy out of the truck and then you can blow up the world if you want." She moves carefully closer as she's distracted with the drone.

As vollo runs his passkey through the lock, he sees a pueblo man in an official uniform waiting, with a gun trained on the door - and the body of his dead co-driver draped over him as cover. He opens fire, almost by reflex, but he's been slowed by wounds and hurt.

Vollo dodges up and backwards, careful not to lose his footing. He pulls out his cerebus pistol and keys it over to gel rounds, firing twice.

Vollo takes his shots with the cerberus loaded with a dual clip of gel rounds. He overdoes it just a bit and the shots to the head and neck are too much for the already wounded man. "Dammit." He lifts his head clear of the cab and looks at Kensai. "I am going to hand these guys up. It might be a little messy."
Kensai, on the meanwhile, takes his moment to line up his shot, mentally switching the firing selector to full automatic, and opens fire. The one-time red samurai's aim isn't exquisite, but it's proficient, and does what he intends it to do. The rain of explosive bullets is too much even for a vehicle's sturdy body and circuity and it explodes in a shower of sparks and shrapnel.

Vixen looks at the mage as soon as the drone explodes into bits. The sound of gunfire from the truck gives her a momentary heart attack and then silence. "Now you'll let me and my friends leave. And you can… finish blowing shit up."

Kensai looks down at the bodies, studying the carnage, and nods. "Hai," he says, and reaches down to help lift the bodies as Vollo hands them up to them. "They have had better days, hai?"
The woman nods. "Thank you," she says. "I will tell the earth mother you have helped me, and will remember your name at the next snake dance." Her eyes scan the sky again. "No more drones," she breathes, with a sigh of relief, and then looks down, and sighs. "And so passes the Hammer-cycles. Another road gang, hired to do a job… fallen like wheat from the thresher." She looks back at Vixen. "No hard feelings? I hired these men to stop this truck, but we were not… friends. Are any of yours wounded?"

Vixen shrugs, "Not sure. Seems like they are fine." She lowers her gun a little not directly pointing it at the mage anymore and moves back to her bike. Her last word of advice to the shaman, "You're swinging at windmills. This…" Pointing to the truck and the death below her, "Is pointless. You need to find a better way." She notes quietly but it's not her biz really. She sighs, "One of my friends was hit with a lucky bullet."
The woman starts walking in that direction, holding out a hand toward the ground. dust stirs, and a hand rises up out of it, lifting the rifle up and handing to the woman. She smiles and thanks the small prairie spirit that had been lying in wait, and then looks over at Vixen as she walked. "Perhaps," she says. "But this truck, today, will not deliver its load of high-carbon footprint fuel to be used in aquatic factories. Production will be disrupted and the earth with have a little longer. Have you heard the legend of the starfish?"
Vixen shakes her head, "I don't think so." She looks around the desert that surround them and lifts a skeptical brow, but then says, "No, I haven't heard of it." As they make their way towards the truck.

"A small child was walking along the shore of the yucatan sea at low tide," the woman says. "Stopping by each starfish, to throw it back into the ocean. When her uncle saw, he came out to chide her. 'What are you doing?' He asked. 'You can't possibly think you can save them all. There are too many!'" She walks towards Vollo, looking at the bodies that have gathered. "The girl smiled at him, joy in her eyes, and picked one up. 'I know I can't save them all, uncle,' she told him. 'But I can save this one!' And threw it into the sea." She reaches vollo now, and looks him over. "You didn't tell me your wounded friend was so handsome."

Vixen likes the mages story and nods then glances at Kensai, a silent communication between them. Basically, Win some, lose some. She keys her comm, "You're going to have to get her number, we don't have time to play the dating game."

The woman touches Vollo's leg, and as she does she starts singing, softly, something that sounds like a lullaby in her native language. She's still oozing blood from her own wound, but she made a promise… the magic almost slips, but she furrows her brow in concentration, and for a moment there's an image of a horse's face over her own, and the sensation of distant, thundering hooves…. and then the wound is knitted up, almost all the way.
Vixen leaves the mage her contact info and tells her if she finds herself in need of better friends than the friends left dead on the road, to call. Never hurts to work for the random eco friendly terrorist.
Vollo leans in and humms with the lady while she works. The horse's face startles him a little but then he just kind of goes with it.
Kensai watches in respect, studying the spell as it works, his gaze going faraway as he turns his head and regards her. When she's done the spell, she looks at him, too - looking into him - and then she turns her attention toward the truck. "Thank you for this help. The way this will burn will be much cleaner than if allowed to at sea…"
That said, there are more cars coming, and suddenly it's easy to remember this is in the middle of the highway. "Go," she tells them. "We can talk later, and…" There's another sound of thunder, but this time it isn't hooves, it's something else, something brilliant and purple and vibrant swooping through the sky. "The spirits approve," she says. "Praise be."
Vollo takes the driver's seat again and seems happy that the porsche is still in good condition. He signals to Kensai and then to Vixen. 'WHo is riding with me?"
Vixen gets back in the passenger seat with a heavy sigh, Kensai gets back to driving the Harley, which hopefully avoided getting scuffed in the battle, and Vollo back on the bike. The sun finally creeping over the horizon setting the land on fire. She watches in the side mirror as the truck disappears from view and then the brilliant explosion. Her mind returning to the legend of the Starfish and she ponders it for a while before allowing herself to rest for the last leg of the trip to New Orleans. "I'm with you Fuzzball."
