Battle for Ostrich Creek

Title: Battle for Ostrich Creek
DM: Indrakashi
Players: Shift. Teutonic. Seraphim.

MPRI has an entirely different type of job for those who follow MercNet. Not their normal offerings for CSF, but a multi week contract in the Phillipines, at an outpost called 'Ostrich Creek'. No one is sure why it's called Ostrich Creek, it just is. From all trix searches and the like, it's a minimally sized facility on a creek that is merely a relay station, entirely automated..and really. There is no ostritches out there. It's in the jungle, in a clearing maintained by occasional flame thrower use every few months.

So this is what MPRI is offering for a short term contract, they just need bodies to sit in a damn relay outpost and make sure the lights still work for a few weeks. What ever can go wrong?
Shift does his whole paranoia thing, disguise, drones, ect. Its not always just for MPRI, but its for the other runners who might show up, runners or mercs, whatever. He will pack heavy for the trip though, some good weapons, grenades, and heck, even a missile launcher if they let him.
Seraphim packs comparatively light. She brings a suite of medical supplies, though presumably the field office itself will have a crash room. Savior medkit, medicine bags, biomonitors. She also has a fairly fancy looking little pistol and several bags containing who knows what. The sword is pretty noticeable despite being kept wrapped in black cloth to protect the scabbard. The tall silver haired elven woman does her work in relative silence.
Teutonic heads back into the MPRI office once more, at this point they know his name by heart and don't even bother asking him to fill out the normal paperwork. Sign the waiver and head on through, he gets the express treatment. Upstairs he gets shuffled through to the room again and now waits for the briefing to start and then for them to get shipped to this random outpost in the middle of nowhere. Keep the lights on they said. Too easy he said. This shit's a scam. He's just not sure how yet.
There isn't even a true meeting this time, because it's -that- basic. There's the standard paper work, and a datachip showing where this Relay Post is, and that it's pretty minimal pay, and they'll have onsite Trix access for entertainment. Simply put? MPRI doesn't feel like paying one of their own specialists, to make sure air conditioning is on for the relay equipment. ((This run will be worth more then that, but that is how it's being sold.)) But no fears, those who accept get that lovely security voucher that'll let them sneak their gear around Denver to get it on the flight out of country!
"May as well settle in and get comfortable, gentlemen,. We're going to be here a little while." Seraphim speaks with a soft voice, a smooth alto which manages to project a no nonsense sort of calm. She takes a deep breath after making this statement and then reaches up to adjust her glasses as she considers the others present. "Who knows how long it will be until we find out why we're actually here. Hm?"
Teutonic has a feeling that this job will be annoying. Go to remote outpost, keep the equipment running. Usually the reason they start outsourcing is because their own employees get tired of fixing the stuff. In this case, all he can do is wait and find out if he'll have to spend an inordinate amount of his time here buried in HVAC machines. For now though, he takes his meager possessions and heads over to get settled in with a nod, "Yeah, looks like. At least it's cozy. Maybe if we're lucky it'll mostly work."

Shift has his large bags of gear, and his security armor. He checks weapons and things like that, even his few drones he brought with him. He has quite the assortment, hopefully they won't have to bail at any point in time.
People can collect their gear, and all of that. Thats the easy part, the fast part. There is no getting around having to switch a few MPRI Flights to reach the phillipines. Then getting to drive a land rover out to the Relay post. It's in the jungle, it's hot, it's humid, and the insects never shut up. Then there's the crew they are replacing taking the Land Rover to get back to 'civilization' with taunts of 'We'll bring you cold beer!' in a good natured way. Oh…fortunately for Sera? There's two bunk rooms, so she doesn't need to shack up with Shift and Teut for the duration!
Shifts first priority is to inspect the building, figure possible defensive positions and what to do if the thing is attacked. He will set out his drones to give any extra camera views he might need. Then he will do a quick scout of the area outside, just enough to know whats around them.

«Auto-Judge[]» Shift (#12621) rolls Intelligence for "Droney sensors KP:1":
2 3 4 4 5 5
«OOC» Shift says, "Stand"
You paged Shift with 'it's not until the Drone goes past two hundred meters it finds any thing; it finds some old camp fires. At least a week old, and thats about it.'.
«Plot» Indrakshi says, "As for defensive structures; the place isn't front line fortifications, but it was designed to withstand storms and like gun fire."
Shift will report to the others the signs of old campfires outside the perimeter, though he has no idea what they might have been for.
Seraphim ends up stripping down to a black bodysuit and denim jacket rather than wearing full clothing, having grown tired of sweating so heavily. She sweats cleanly, something peculiar to her kind, and seems to be handling the heat with a moderate amount of calm. When Shift is deploying drones she watches, her glasses shifting from transparent toward blue. "Fires? Then we hav guests here. If they were planning on doing anything to the facility they probably already would have. Shall we get inside and search the building out? May as well unpack."
«Auto-Judge[]» Seraphim (#11927) rolls Intelligence for "Elfvision! Do I see anything I should be afraid of?":
1 1 2 2 2 5 8 9
«Plot» Indrakshi says, "The clearing around the Relay Post is ~20 meters total. After that, it's thick jungle. You can't really make out any thing past that Sera."
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Old campfires, maybe a week »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Seems like an odd place to camp. »
Once Shift is comfortable with the security setup, he sets up his gear for rapid access, and will wear his security armor, despite the heat. He will also routinely send drones out for scouting missons, just a kilometer out and back, to check things.
«Auto-Judge[]» Seraphim (#11927) rolls 6 for "Rating 6 Bug Scanner!":
1 3 3 4 5 17
You paged Seraphim with 'the palce is infact, not bugged. The security logs how ever, show several proximity alerts triggered about 400 meters out, and despite repeated attempts to locate a reason, none were ever found. Official logged reason: 'Probably some wild boar''.
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Security logs indicate that there have been repeated proximity alerts in the area. About three hundred meters into the jungle? The reason listed is 'probably some kind of wild boar', but if you see camp fires… Well. »
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Evil native demon monster. Thats my guess »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Or… People… »
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Something that swam up here from Australia, weird shit in Australia »
Commlink-Teutonic> Teutonic sends, « Okay, I'll take first shift. You guys get some sleep. »
Teutonic heads in and sets his gear up. While they go do the scouting and what not, he heads to the trix systems and sees what they got hooked up. Just some proximity alarms, but it's better than nothing. Okay, he can do this. Someone has to take first shift and since they just did all the scouting, it'll be him. He announces this and settles into the operators chair before sliding the equipment over and pulling his deck out. One into his head and the deck, one in the deck and to the alarm console. «Okay guys, sleep tight. I'll keep us safe then I can sleep when you two get up.»
When people decide to rack out, with Teut's brain jacked into the alarm system, nothing happens for the night..or the next few days. It's not until the next night when Teut would infact, along with every one, the sound of a screeching Klaxon alert.

"Unauthorized personnel in the perimeter."

It screeches annoyingly until some one shuts it off. The problem? No Cameras are -showing- a fucking thing, and the perimeter starts officially 500 meters out!
Shift grunts, and launches one of his drones, hoping its sensors will see what these cameras aren't finding.
<Auto-Judge[]» Shift (#12621) rolls Intelligence + 1 (sensors) for "Yes, crappy sensors, but better than nuthin":
1 1 2 2 5 10 16
Seraphim actually wanders the entire premises holding a small bug scanner in her left hand. She checks all the usual culprits, incuding any junction boxes and computers she might be able to locate. The process does not take a great deal of time. A silver haired elf wandering the premises dressed in black. Then she is moving toward her personal bunk. Her stuff is comprehensive, but fits into a rucksack and satchel; little enough that she can carry all of it on her at one time and still be actionable. Barely.

And then there are alarms. Sera peels an eye open and slowly shakes her head, sighing as she does so. No movement or now. No noise either. She does, however, subvocalize.
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Don't tell me I am going to have to walk the perimeter to figure this out… »

Teutonic has already cut that alarm off and is relaying the information on the location to Shift and his drone. «I got nothing on the cameras shift. See what the drone can find.»
Miko has left.
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « I'm scouting now. »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Let me know if you gentlemen need me. »
Commlink-Teutonic> Teutonic sends, « You wanna help me watch these cameras? Even with it jacked directly in my head i can only process so many at once. »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Not a problem. We can route them through my HUD and I can keep an eye while I walk the building. »
Commlink-Teutonic> Teutonic sends, « Okay, sending some now »
You paged Shift with 'Your Drone is picking up dozens of signatures, but the physical sensors? Nothing, just signature locks. You do not like this, at all. Especially when an explosive arrow sprangs off a tree branch near the drone and -explodes-'.
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Dozens of targets, none of them showing well on sensors. I'm guessing magical camo or invisibility. And it looks like explosive arrows have been fired at me »
Shift pulls the drone back up into the air, flying high and back toward the building. He isn't going to waste it on something simple like this.
Commlink-Teutonic> Teutonic sends, « Oh joyous. »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Explosive… arrows? »
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Yes, arrows. »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « That rules out cannibals. Not much left to eat if you blow up. »
Commlink-Seraphim> Seraphim sends, « Sorry. Bad joke. You wouldn't believe the year I've had. »
Shift will move quickly towards the garage, finding something to use as cover and opening the doors so he has a decient field of fire. With enough room that he can sense using his special adept abilities anyone entering the garage. Motion sense and Magic sense should cover that.
Shift also creates his own ultrasound, with his voice, its like humming.
Teutonic is still on cameras and these things aren't going to be very useful, but the proximity alarms may be. «Alright well, What are we going to do folks? Do you want me to call for help? I'll keep up with the prox alarms, should be able to warn us about enemy movements. I can't actually see shit with the cameras.» He also activates the RAS Override so he can watch his six outside his current matrix task too.
«Auto-Judge[]» Seraphim (#11927) rolls Stealth for "Ruthenium Cloak, Six Scanners":
2 2 2 3 4 5
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « Just close the doors we aren't shooting out of, and let us know if it looks like they are breeched. As for help, I think they hired us AS the help. »
«Plot» Seraphim says, "Stand on 11. Bleh."
Commlink-Shift> Shift sends, « You can call if you like, I just expect them to say handle it ourselves »
«Auto-Judge[]» Shift (#12621) rolls Stealth for "Ruthenium 6 scanners, hiding in cover in the garage.":

Commlink-Teutonic> Teutonic sends, « Got ya, closing everything but the garage »
The savages are indeed coming, they don't -just- have arrows mind you, but thats mostly it, if you could see them. Shift sort of can, via ultrasound, still, they either have odd mutations, or magic working for them. It's only when a brief bark of light automatic pistol fire howls out, or arrows clatter off trees, the ground, or structure, or explode in it, that gives away any thing is out there! They'll be out of the jungle soon though and into the potentional killing field of the clearing!
«Auto-Judge[]» Indrakshi (#6312) rolls 2 vs TN 5:
4 5 = 1 Success
«Plot» Shift says, "Using 10 rounds of Incidiary to burn up the forest and limit access"
Shift unloads full auto, his SMG spouting firey ammo into the forest until several small fires start. Shifts plan of course is to limit access or burn a few who were two close. He quickly switches to EXEX now.
Fire means they can't press their advance through one flank, and will need to circle back around for the others, which means the -first- wave is pressing across the Creek. You can see the water move when they step, but no bodies. It's rather disconcerting, and the rattle of steel can be heard too. Oh god are they fixing bayonets to charge Seraphim's WINDOW!?

Seraphim has the most frightening thing ever, the Window she was firing from? It entirely shatters into her body as these enemies fire at, intent on destroying it, and then loud yells begin and the water is disturbed briefly, before it's no longer. They're -charging- and more and more can be heard to enter the water, flooding the creek over their dead comrades. Shift might be ready to shit him self, since he can see it's an unending tide! Seraphim quickly draws a combat knife from a sheath lcated at her left side. "Going to be overrun here in just a second. Get away from the window!" She turns her pistol on the window, laser sight scattering across the broken glass. Another shot, but no accompanying screams. She is scowling as she backs up, moving through the room to try and find more cover. As she does she's calling out, «This is Seraphim, free agent kilo-six-three. The relay outpost is under assault…» Coordinates, directions, speculations about the enemy. No reason to spare details.

Shift seems really lucky tonight, firing away and still landing nades on the half invisible folks, yet there are more and more screams as things just keep dying.
The grenades work wonders; invisible or not, fragmentations tears apart bodies, screams of the dead and dying overshadowed by the natives sprinting through the water with the rattle of metal weapons being prepared, and arrows flying. Except the bodies that are rather close to the window? You can -sort- of tell where they are, when puffs of white spores spray out, making a thin milky haze in the air.

"Uh. Say again? Roger that..tasking Drone Sweep to support."

Teut is again, on the receiving end of things, it doesn't help he -can't- see. It helps the enemy Shift set every thing ablaze <along with the Drone coming in for that matter>. But Those short blades find weakness in Teut's armor and sink in deep, possibly rupturing internal organs as he can -smell- the cloying scent of flowers? What the hell Flowers?

As Teut is being swarmed over Seraphim swings around, violet eyes casting over her fellow runner. She curses loudly then, speaking in Sperethiel and Japanese for those who comprehend. Then the woman is leaping into motion. She's quite nimble darting forward and crouching low so that she can throw herself into place above the fallen warrior. Her knife rises, quick strikes at each of those surrounding them. The tip finds purchase on one of her opponents, but it is obvious that despite the blood following it she will have difficulty fighting two invisible warriors with just a knife. Still, she covers Teut. They will have to go through her to get to him.
It's not like Teutonic meant to get cut down, but there's only so much his training to sense enemies without sight can do against invisible guys swinging invisible swords. Even less so when there are two of them. But at the least Seraphim got away. He does his best to push their blades away, but he just gets cut more and ends up bleeding on the floor. Still breathing, but bleeding.

Grenades are fun, grenades are good, grenades can ruin your neighborhood. Yes, Shift continues to blow things to chunks with his nade launcher. Though he is giving thought to upgrading the skillsoft, he needs a little more accuracy.
Seraphim repels another assualt from the things surrounding her, still warding them away from Teut. A kick brings her some breathing room and she quickly sheathes her weapons. What follows is the ring of a sword being released from its sheath at her belt. The long, slender blade is held in front of her and everything in the elf's body language changes. There is perspiration on her brow but she seems calmer just for holding the weapon.
Now the drone support -does- arrive, a soft whisper in the air as it approaches, a dark shape overhead, and the sudden howl of fire as it's HMG begins to pummel the jungle, along with FWOOSH of rocket pods starting up along the creek and yet burning jungle.

"Vectoring additional elements! It looks like a fething army down there!"

The Rigger says, but it's not likely any one will -press- their advantage into that maelstorm of shrapnel. Especially with additional drone elements inbound…but there's still three natives -inside-.

"We're seeing more signatures further out. Dispatching a Slick."

At least that's good, right?

Now Seraphim is a glittering arc. She spins the long slender blade as one of the enemy's comes close, slashing it downward through the air. Monofilament edge cut through the first's leg, sending blood spurting down the side and legs of the thing as it is struck. A savage kick sends them reeling backward in time for her to turn and thrust, placing her weapon through her other foe at an angle- downward, thanks to height. On a human she would strike a lung, perforat the diaphragm and open up the colon. The blade comes free easily, too sharp to simply become stuck.

Shift figured the MGL would be no good, so as he ran he grabbed his SMG, when he turns the corner he spots them, seeing the hazy images with his ultrasound and feeling thier movement through the mana in the air. He raises his SMG, the skillsoft taking aim at each one and letting loose with a burst, dropping them one by one.
By now? The jungle is a blazing inferno in most areas around the Relay Post, and the sound of a Helo is likely welcomed. Though Shift is going to need to help Teut get there, and Seraphim likely doesn't enjoy the sensations in her body. It's there with a pilot, who is pointing a Sub Gun out the cockpit door to hose randomly at the tree line. From the air? For those watching signatures? It's a clusterfuck, some thing like a Japanese Banzai Charge! Then they'll be evaced to a medical facility..and get a -very- nice bonus when they return to Denver.

END LOG.
