A Joker in History - Part 1
GM: Nightshade
Players: Nightshade, Joker.
Synopsis: A small time fixer hires Joker on the cheap using Nightshade as the J.
Date: Oct 29th through Nov 1st 2070

There's a lot to be said about the benefits of competition in a market, keeps prices down, keeps quality up as providers struggle to put the best offering on the market for the consumers, but when your rep takes a hit…suddenly job offers dry up and those that come your way are drek for pay.

Joker has recently been caught up in just that muddle and finds himself walking downstairs into the private room of The RagDoll. A troll named Nightshade who he's seen in some of the shadowy spots of Denver has called him in for a job on behalf of a small time fixer named Jorge Curio.

The RagDoll - Private Room

This room might best be described as serviceable. The place has been made for secure meetings or even maybe a small party or card game. Nothing fancy is here, nothing that would stand out or be too fussy. Instead, a large table dominates the room with a faux wood top and thick legs constructed out of burnished chrome pipes, not unlike those you might find on a chopper. Six to eight chairs sit around the table, depending on the client and needs, each with a thick pad for comfort.

The dark brown walls are covered in Harley and Brawl memorabilia, with the centerpiece being a trophy from the 2049 Championship games. A trideo screen sits opposite the entryway, allowing those here to watch the game or use it for display purposes. The room is thickly insulated and soundproof, allowing a measure of privacy from the upstairs. The light in the room comes from a number of lights inset into the ceiling which can be adjusted by a switch on the wall.

Joker makes his way down the stairs calmly enough, hands shoved into his jean pockets. His face is a mask of indifference as he takes in the room, the table, and the troll woman at the table. He acts as if this were a situation he found himself in all the time, but suttle ticks in his bodylanguage, a certain tenseness of his shoulders, things of that nature give away the fact that he is new at this. He steps off the last step and saunters casually up to the table, nodding to Nightshade.

Nightshade is sitting at the large table, she's got an massive overcoat hung on the chair next to her and a cammo jumpsuit on. She looks up "Joker?" She inquires, gesturing to a seat across from her.

Joker nods again and pulls one hand briefly out of a pocket to pull out the chair. Glancing first down at the seat of the chair, to check for something, he seats himself across from the troll without a word. His hands go automaticly back into his pockets. He doesn't seem to be trying to freeze Nightshade out or be rude, he just isn't the talkative type.

Nightshade reaches down to a fair sized steamer trunk sitting next to her she unzips a pouch on the top and pulls out several documents printed on flimsies and slides them over towards Joker, "There's an old theme park a few miles from here called Historia, I've been hired to clear out a section of it. There's a few go-gangs that like to tear it up in the parking lot and a couple of squatters that take shelter in the buildings till they realize there's nothing to eat that far out of town." The flimsies are transparent maps that stack on top of eachother, the base shows an ariel photo of the park, an overlay shows the structures and paths as they once were when the place was new.

Joker looks down at the map thoughtfully, checking out the parking lot and buildings mentioned. He also studies it for entrences and exits, dead ends, and places he wouldn't want to end up if he were escaping from the place. He is no stranger to maps like this one it seems. As he studies the map he waits quietly for more info from Nightshade.

Nightshade gives Joker a few minutes to study the map, "Our employer indicated you might be a little short of supplies at the moment, so he has instructed me to provide you with up to twenty five hundred nuyen in reasonable equipment, and to let you know that if you perform admirably he may have more work for you in the future despite your…reputation."

Joker speaks up for the first time in his quiet southern drawl, looking up at Nightshade witha slight shake of his head, "I got some money. But,if you can get me some gear, I'll pay you 'stead of the fixer I was gonna track down." He makes no mention of his Rep.

Nightshade considers, "That's a possibility, what sort of gear are you short on."

Joker thinks that over for a moment, then says, "Need a blade of some kind, some armor, and maybe a grapple gun or somethin of that nature. That is what I'd pick for a really light settup. I had a katana, two tomahawks, four shuriken, two customized wristle grapple guns, some armor, some forearm guards, and my forearm snap blades before I got caught." he shrugs, relaxing back in his chair, "Any of that you can make happen real quick, I'll buy it off of you."

Nightshade puts in a quick call, running off the list Joker gave without waiting for an answer and hanging up without waiting for a response. A short time later her poc-sec bleeps. "I can do some blades and armor, fairly quick, but those wrist lines are custom work, would probably take several days at best just to get them and we've only got 3 days to get the site clear and keep it clear."

Joker nods, as if he was expecting that, "What's the price? I'll buy what you can get soon. I'll help with this job without the grapple guns."

Nightshade looks over the list, "Katana will cost you 2k, two Tomahawks are 400, Secure Jacket is going to run you 800, fancy throwing stars 10 will cost you 600, so that makes it 3800, knock off the twenty five and you owe me 1300."

Nightshade holds up finger, "Oh, snap blades, they'd be 3200 for a pair, you want them?"

Nightshade says, "It'd be 4500 if you do."

Joker thinks that over for a moment, then asks, "You can add form fitting armor to that, a full suit? And some forearm guards? If so, do that and I'll pay for the full thing, don't knock off the 2500, I got it covered. Add the snap blades to that hole mess, and tell me the price."

Joker pulls his hands from his pockets, a roll of bills in each. He places thoughs on the table, then stoops to pull another roll from his right boot, placing that next to the other two on the table. Once that is done he starts to unroll and count each stack, frowning down at the money.

Nightshade shakes her head, "Form fitting stuff has to be form fit, takes to long, the forearm guards I can do though, it'd be 7k. I can arrange for the form fitting stuff for you, cost you another two grand making it 9, but it wouldn't be ready for a week, and you'd need to go get fitted, but I know a guy."

Joker nods once more, finished with his seccond roll of bills. He combines them into one stack and pushes that toward Nightshade, "Well, there is the nine." he says, picking up the uncounted third stack and stooping to shove that back into his boot.

Nightshade places the order then nods, "Alright, I'll have that for you shortly. As for the park." She taps a near taloned finger on the map near the parking lot, "Most of the go-gangs stay around this area and tear up the parking lot, we don't need to worry about that so much as long as we keep them out of the park itself." She traces a circle with her finger, "This part, presentville. That's our clear zone, everything else can be downtown Chicago for all we care." She looks over the map, "I'm thinking show of force plus some nuyen to encourage them to stay out of the park for the day. Your thoughts?"

Joker studies the map and shakes his head slightly, "They'll just be back the next day, then you'll have to pay them again. How 'bout this. Show of force, nuyen, and a threat. Tell them that you pay them to leave, if they show up tomorrow you'll kill part of them. They won't believe you, but if they show up tomorrow, just kill some of them to make yer point." he glances back up at Nightshade, "Was that your plan?"

Nightshade considers, "I normally try to avoid killing gangers, it's like killing family with them, leads to vendettas and they're not worth it. A bullet in the foot or a blade in the guts that'll have them pissing themselves all the way back to the doc, sure, but death doesn't get forgiven that easily."

Joker leans back in his chair and returns his hands to his pockets, "Well, if that's what yer thoughts are, I'll follow yer lead." With that, Joker lapses back into silence.

Nightshade nods, "You wanna play good cop or bad cop? I figure we both go out to meet them the day before, pay off those that are there and then do a sweep of the park if they leave quietly. Next day we pull guard duty at the front gate."

Nightshade considers, "Mmm, actually, I should probably pull guard duty while you prowl the fence and make sure no-one slips over."

Joker nods his head in agreement, then adds, "I'll take bad cop. Hopefully I don't gotta talk much, I ain't a good speaker."

Nightshade nods, "Alright. I'll meet you back here tomorrow with your gear, that'll give you the day to get comfortable with it, then we'll head into the park. I'm going to hoof it and come up from this direction, no reason to let them shoot up my whip." She indicates approaching through the forested area behind the park, looks like an unpleasant trek. "You want to hike it or risk your ride?"

Joker stands and pushes his chair back in with a foot, "Don't own a ride, I'll walk. Thanks for the gear." with that he turns and heads for the stairs up.

Nightshade nods, waiting till Joker is clear before putting in a few more quick calls that go straight to voicemail and don't get a response about his remaining gear, then she stands picking up and stowing her gear and information before exiting."

The next day Nightshade arrives with two trunks in tow rather than just her normal one. She makes her way down the stairs in the RagDoll. Carting other people's crap around always grates on her nerves, though the cred helps mollify those feelings.

Joker was hanging out in the corner of the ragdoll and follows Nightshade down once he notices her. Typically his hands are hiding in his pockets and he moves casually down the stairs, checking out the two trunks, studying his partner of the day as well.

Nightshade thunks down the fair sized trunk, she's making an obvious effort carrying both but it doesn't seem to wind her too badly. She sets the simple combination lock on the chest to 028341, then opens the chest pressing the toggle inside and zeroing the code. "There you go, all set." Mounted diagnally under the lid is the Katana held in place by straps, the throwing stars are mounted on either side, in the main area of the box the secure jacket is folded with the forearm guards in the middle and sits on top of a small panel that when lifted shows the snap blades and tomahawks. The whole case is on sturdy wheels and has adjustible straps that can be pulled like a wagon or used like a harness, it looks like a slightly smaller version of Nightshade's own trunk.

Joker steps up to the trunk and glances inside, then nods his head once and says, "Thankya." Without another word he pulls his hands from his pockets and starts to undo the buttons of his overshirt, the scars on his palms and inside curls of his fingers winking at Nightshade. "Give me the updated game plan while I suit up if you've gon and changed it. We leave out when you say so." He lapses into silence as he undoes all his buttons and slips the shirt off, wearing his wife-beater tanktop underneath. He then reaches down into the trunk and starts to pull out and his gear and suit up. Pulling out the jacket and slipping that on, then buckling the forearm guards over his now covered arms, ECT.

Nightshade gives a quick cuss, "Comms…you're not wearing a radio."

Nightshade sighs, "Well, we'll be radio silent once we split, no help for it now. You don't carry anything ranged other than the stars?" She says looking over his loadout as he gears up.

Joker shakes his head as he reaches up to unstrap the Katana and sling it over his shoulder, buckling it across his chest. He then reaches down for the compartment in the bottom and pulls out the snap blades, strapping them onto his right arm. He considers the Tomahawks for a moment, then decides to take them as well. Pulling them in their harnesses out he slips them around to hang along his lower back. Once thoughs are secure he takes the stars in their two harnesses from the chest and straps one to each thigh. Grabbing his dress shirt he tosses it into the trunk and slams it shut, rolling his shoulders to make sure everything sits fine. "The tomahawks can be thrown to." he responds simply to Nightshade's question, which is pritty much a yes.

Nightshade considers this, then nods, "True…probably quieter than my guns too." She regards him with a critical eye then offers a suggestion or two to make the gear look more natural under his coat before hoisting her trunk up and settling it on her shoulders, "My gear…is a little obvious, I'll save putting it on till we're into the woods."

Joker nods simply and shoves his hands into his coat pockets, waiting for Nightshade to lead the way out. He leaves his trunk on the table, ither not carying if it gets stolen, or figgering that people saw Nightshade cary it in, so they won't touch it.

The trunk sits like a massive backpack, the straps obviously designed for this. Nightshade looks up towards the exit and grumbles, realizing the trunk won't clear the stairs that wan and drops it back down into a less comfortable hold. "We'll go start with light recon and see how it goes." She glances at the trunk he's leaving behind, "Don't want it?" she asks. Turning around to pick it up and carry it out if he doesn't.

Joker glances back at the trunk, then quietly walks over to it and lifts it onto his back backpack style, heading out after Nightshade.

Nightshade chuckles, "If you don't want it, that's fine." Once outside she hoists hers up to her back. "I just find them handy." She heads over to an old cargo van, putting her trunk inside she moves to the front seat, "Hop in, I'll drive us to the far side of the woods."

Joker pushes his trunk in after Nightshades, if she lets him, then moves around to the passenger seat and climbs in. He lounges back in his seat the best he can, though all the gear on his back could not be comfortabble.

Nightshade laughs as Joker makes up for being in Troll sized seat by keeping his gear on, "Interesting tactic." The drive isn't very pretty, abandoned homes and a dying town then broken up roads till they reach a spot where it looks like then can pull off, a few sharp bumps later they're parked and Nightshade is stepping out to kick at the tracks the tires left in the dirt and grass so they're a little less obvious.

To (Nightshade, Joker), Dalton pages: Are you two plotting?
To (Nightshade, Joker), Dalton pages: Watchers are hunting down Joker. Just thought I'd mention it :)
You paged Dalton with 'As in right now?'.
Dalton pages: Yes, every few hours I send out one to find him.

Joker slips out and joins Nightshade, just standing with his hands in his pockets as she kicks at the ground. He doesn't bother himself, figguring if someone wanted to find the big van, they could do it easy enough.

Nightshade and Joker are standing by beside an old cargo van in the woods near Historia theme pak, there's a chittering noise near Nightshade's ear and she says, "Well follow them and see who wants what." Nightshade stands still and leans against the van, "Someone's looking for you or me Joker. One moment while I find out who." A watcher spirit attempts to follow Dalton's back to it's origin.

Joker nods and quietly starts to pace around the big van, hands in pockets and an anoyed look on his face.

Dalton is sitting in a lawn chair on top of the World Tree magic shop, a pocsec in his lap as he reads up on something. He waits patiently for his watcher to return as he works on other things.

Joker is singing in his head…'we're just two lost souls swimmin ina fish bowl'…as he paces.(yay, now he contributed to long range posing)

A watcher spirit, looking to be made of bone and barbs materializes before Dalton shortly after his watcher returns. "Who you looking for and what do you want?" It asks curtly, it's tiny voice hits the t's like teeth clicking together.

Dalton arches a brow as he spirit appears, but responds "Joker, and what I want is a few questions answered." He puts his pocsec away as he waits for the response.

The spirit nods then vanishes fast traveling back to where Nightshade waits relaying it's message, she listens to it's description, "Great…questions." She gestures to the spirit, "Go ask if it can wait or if this needs resolution immediately, tell him Joker has a deadline to meet within a day, add that for 10k Nightshade will make sure Joker is at his doorstep upon completion of that deadline."

Dalton nods as the spirit arrives and relays its message. "Tell her that I can wait a day, and that since I really don't have 10k to spare, I'll take my chances finding him myself."

Joker stops circling the car to stare at Nightshade for a moment, Electric blue eyes sizing her up. He would probably have killed her with that look if he had lazor vission. Once he is done staring pointedly at her he goes back to pacing her van.

Nightshade chuckles when the spirit returns, "Go tell him he's a liar and a cheapskate, but at least he's a patient one." She then turns to Joker, "I'd recommend going to see him after we're done, word on him is he isn't above sending out the big guns when needed…pity I couldn't pick up some cred on the deal though."

Joker stops to stare quietly at Nightshade again. He obviously isn't intimidated by her, and shows no inclination to follow her advice. Hands in his pockets he turns, then starts to walk quietly around her van, endlessly tracing out a path around it. Curiously enough, he leaves no footprints.

Dalton grins when the remark returns, and then sends the spirit back with one last message. "Tell Joker I just want to talk, I mean him no harm." Then he heads downstairs back into the World Tree.

Nightshade glances over at the spirit as it appears and delivers its message to Joker, "Most likely he's telling the truth about that though, threats would be delivered by a much bigger spirit." She takes her trunk out of her truck, glances towards the road making sure it's fairly well screened from casual observation then takes her gear from the trunk. Two massive blades fill the diagonal of the trunk side by side, one either side of the blades and only slightly smaller are a pair of ares alphas, filling up the corners of the boxe are several ammo clips. Nightshade removes her coat, then puts the two blades on her back pulling the coat down over them a little awkwardly, it looks like it would have been much easier to draw and resheath the blade once the coat was on but she avoids doing that for some reason. Once the coat is on and closed she hangs the pair of alphas one from a sling on either side they clip into the harness to keep them from swinging while she moves. She would look ridiculous…if you were fond of laughing at trolls that literally bristled with weapons.

East Castle Rock, dominated by the abandoned 'Historia' Theme Park gets a bit more traffic than West Castle Rock, given its popularity with various Go-Gangs that roam the area. The residential districts have all been consumed by the encroaching neo-wilderness, but that failed park is still in fairly good condition, and its parking lots offer a vast expanse of drivable hardtop.

Each equipped in their fashion the pair make their way towards the Historia theme park. A quick recon reveals that the interior is largely empty only a few stray gang members walking in to relieve themselves in choice spots or make time with their girls and guys in spots not previously made choice for other reasons. In the parking lot about fifty go-gangers are tearing up the asphault using the massive lot as an impromptu drag strip. At least three distinctly different gang colors are showing and several folks without clear gang colors circulate between them, there's five cars racing as well as several bikes.

Joker follows behind Nightshade like a smaller, silent shadow. Speaking vary quietly as he notes the people leaving, entering, and doing other things he asks, "Hostages or no?"

Nightshade looks over the gangers, they're armed but only lightly. "No, I think polite force first, but since you're short range…you stick here. If things go south, you take out the wandering ones so they don't slow me down if I need to leg it." She looks at the gates, then at the cars racing. "Actually, if things go south, bleed 'em but leave 'em alive enough to scream, I'll need distractions."

Joker nods and steps back a couple of steps into the shadows of the trees, reaching up to draw his Katana. He waves her on with it, then turns to quickly step even further into the woods, weaving threw the trees like a jungle cat.

Nightshade watches Joker go for the first few seconds, then chuckles, "Great, another damn squirrel…going to have to think of something to call this one…chipmunk…lemur…hmmm" Eventually she passes out of earshot a few minutes pass before the go-gangers see her approaching, a few more before they make out exactly how much ordinance she's carrying and gather up, word are exchanged and then Nightshade passes out several credsticks, most of the gangers disperse several start honking and the stragglers in the theme park start making their way towards the entrance. Nightshade stands off to the side by the gate watching them leave.

Nightshade waits till the major evac has taken place, then calls over to Joker, "Alright, I'll make sure nobody else comes in, you make sure the place is cleared out, by morning we need presentland clear, and we need to keep it clear till the end of the day…well not counting the folks who'll be arriving, but you won't mistake them for anything else.

Historia Park - Parking Area

Historia was once a major tourist draw for Castle Rock, back before the Crash of 29. Now it's a destination for go-gangs, for the mobile criminal, for the thrill seeker. The parking lot, able to hold up to fourteen thousand cars at its peak, is now a cracked expanse of pockmarked ferrocrete littered with abandoned vehicles. Some of the Go-Gangs have cleared out huge sections of the parking lot for racing and other deathsports.

The main entrance to Historia is fashioned to look like a massive portcullis, the entryway to a castle or fortress, towers to either side occasionally staffed by crows or vultures.

Joker stalks out of the trees and walks over to the gate, moving into the parkinglot with his sword still out. Nodding to Nightshade in passing he steps up to a jog and heads across the parking lot, moving toward Presant lands as instructed.

Historia Park - Main Midway

Once this was the proud central midway of the Historia Educational Theme Park, the proud avenue has crumbled significantly from its glory days. Designed to mimic small-town America, with it's carefully manicured lawns, fluttering flags, post office, drug store and small gas station, it's disrepair is all the more obvious. Now a stopover for go-gangs, it looks like the archeological remains of civilization after barbarians have ransacked it.

Windows have long ago been broken out, with the tags of various gangs competing for wall space. Trees and vegetation wage constant war with the concrete pathways for dominance. The detritus of parties, pieces of broken buildings, parts of rides and other less identifiable trash spill in to the streets, creating a haphazard obstacle course in places.

The last dregs of the go-gangers have pulled out leaving the Midway abandoned.

The Midway is quiet, the only sounds are those of age, decay, and the Denver winds.

Historia Park - PresentVille

Ironically, Presentville is of newer construction than the rest of the Historic Kingdom. Some of the buildings look like they'd still be in use if the park had not fallen into disrepair. Presentville was added later as the themepark was falling into decline. More a traditional amusement park, this section hosts a rusted looking rollercoaster, decrepid bumper cars, a house of horrors and a tunnel of love. The water in the tunnel of love have gone stagnant and debris can be seen floating in them. The Awakening was no less gentle with this park than it was with the rest of the world. The tree cover here is thick, buildings are only glimpsed through them.

Joker moves along from shadow to shadow, sword now sheathed completely. His feet make curiously little noise for his size, and he regularly stops to listen and scan his surroundings as he moves further into the park.

There is more movement in this area as wildlife has moved back into the neo-wilderness, the bushes and trees that have grown up through the sidwalk and in some places even inside buildings. The old rides creak and groan. You're fairly certain the rollercoaster and bumpercars are clear, but the tunnel of love and house of horrors are dark and their depths could hold any number of things.

Joker sneaks up to the corner of the house of hrorors, squatting as he creeps up beside the entrence. He stops moving and starts listening hard, attempting to hear inside.

«OOC» Joker says, "going to flip on thermo, see if I can see threw some walls, and make sure nothing pops out from behind that plastic to scare me. Any heat I'll be suspicious of, this place is supposed to be mostly abbandoned, you know."

The entrance to the house of horrors is a massive devil's head. It's tongue making a staircase that will slide from side to side as you try to walk on it into it's gaping jaws, the door at the back is painted like a pair of tonsils, though it has been defaced with curling hairs drawn on it to suggest…a different piece of anatomy.

Joker sighs unhappily and turns to move quickly up inside the devil's mouth. He is careful to make sure the tongue doesn't move, or if so moves quietly, as he goes up the stairs at a near crouch, trying to be sneaky.

The plastic ghoul bounces a few times as it reaches the top of it's arc, then the air hisses out of the hydrolics, powered by the opening of the door this undead creature lives on even after the rest of the haunted house has died, almost poetic…The room you step into has a spongy floor, at one time it was probably rather bouncy but now the degraded material just sucks at your heels like sticky wet sand. The walls look to have once been covered by loose material and vents showing behind the shreds of cloth show where air would have made the material billow. A dark tunnel ahead continues into the house of horrors.

Joker steps past the ghoul and starts to move quickly down the hall into the darkness, half crouched with his sword ready. Sometimes he pauses to check a hiding spot, but for the most part he keeps right on moving, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up.

This deep inside the house the darkness is nearly complete, so the horrific scenes painted on the walls are have little impact. The tunnel begins to bend sharply to the left and angle downwards more and more steeply, even with your supernatural balance you're finding it difficult to remain standing.

Joker quickly steps forward, then leaps up onto the wall and runs along that, sword held above him, or is it beside him? He runs along the wall until the slope levels out or his 6 meaters is up, wanting to keep on his feet for as long as possible.

Between your wall running and the sharp downard descent you're able to keep running far longer than just 6 meters, while you only descend about 20 meters you cover almost triple that running around the wall of the tight spiral slide.

Joker drops to the floor, hopefully at the bottom of the slide, and attempts to get his barings, scanning the area as he creeps forward.

Joker is in a deep hole, windows high above let in just enough light for you to make out a massive staircased wall of what looks like rubber foam, each 'step' is close to a meter high though several smaller steps are available on each level. There are seven levels each bearing what you can just barely make out to be images of a level of hell. The individual pieces of the wall look as though they could at one time have moved forwards and back to 'push' people off the wall and back down into the hole. The exit is at the top. Many of the sections appear to have been slashed cut or clawed at some point. There is something else in this room breathing…
