A Simple Tap

GM: John Grimm
Players: Dorian, Hek
Synopsis: Break into a construction site to plant a tap.
Date: 9/21/2076

Word filters out…how does it do that anyhow? Is there a runner rolodex somewhere, do fixers get an assignment and then call the guys they know. Ohh well, no matter how, word has been sent to the two of you that a small discrete team is needed. Its going to be a B/E job, so know what your doing. The Jay will be meeting at the Cool Cat backroom, at 9 pm.

A slight chuckle escapes Dorian as he receives word from his Fix, the tall Elf then simply sliding his unfinished whiskey over to Sarah. "Sorry lass, got business." He apologizes in advance for wasting sacred synth booze before straightening out his jacket and making his way towards the back. Before entry he makes sure to light himself a cigarette and give a quick glance around and then he's in.
A place like the Cat is like a sieve, as corporate types with minds calibrated to analyze and report on everything, try to unwind to jazz. Of course they never truly unwind, and it does not take long for cellular data packets to bounce out into the digital ether when club regulars start getting denied entrance to the back room.
By the time Hek gets there, it is a good thing that he has bothered to make some minor attempts to alter his appearance. Glasses, his beard trimmed diferently. Those eyes are hard to disguise, but in the main part of the club there he does not really bother to pause long enough to remain in close proximity to anyone who might notice.

When you enter the back room, in the seat farthest from the door is a suit in dark sunglasses. Next to him are a pair of orks, one on each side, both in suits and glasses. Very MIB. The man in the middle, obviously the Johnson, says nothing for now, apparently waiting for both of you to take a seat after your arrival. Likely you don't both walk in at the same time and all that.

The Scarfaced Elf settles in a seat and shares the mutual silence, enjoying his cigarette as he blows the smoke away from the MIB trio.
"The more details that I have to fill into your plan Mister Johnson, the more it is going to cost you." Hek explains simply, with the friendly demeanor of someone there to help everyone out.
"Gentlemen." A nods to each ork as Dorian heads past him and settles into a seat.

Hek secures the deadbolt and sits opposite of Dorian at the table. "To save you time, I will simplify the likelihood of success like this. If the system you need defeated is built from parts that were manufactured globally and or modified locally within the last five years, I can help you with that."

Once your seated, the Johnson raises his right hand slightly. The ork on the right bends down to pick up a small case, perhaps 8 by 10 with 3 inches thick. The ork then slides the case down to you both. The ork returns to his origional position and the Jay gives a nod towards you both and the case.

«Plot» Hek intends to open the case
«Plot» Dorian says, "Dorian will let him."

As the case is opened, there are two items placed in that foam stuff to keep them protected. A dataline tap with a built in wireless transmitter, and a small chip inside a chipholder.

Gloved for everyone's protection, Hek turns the case towards him and disables the locking mechanism. Instinctively he takes the chip and starts moving it towards the jack embedded in the base of his neck.
"If I don't say mango in two seconds, shoot him." Hek explains simply to Dorian a split second before the chip clicks home.

The Keeb slowly turns in his chair and examines the contents of the briefcase, and judging by the silence of these guys he figured the details were on the chip. "Aye aye."

The data on the chip, are the plans for a building. Then photos of that building under construction, equipment everywhere and the skeleton of the building the only thing really there. An address is listed along with a company name, Mountain Guardian Security.

There is a specific spot on the fifth floor that has been marked. A communications junction site for the building.

"Mango." Hek unslots the chip and puts it back in the case.
"If those images represent the current state of construction on the site, then I'm confident that I can install that device." His assurences are offered to both the Johnson, and the scar faced elf who makes up the third anchor of the scheming trio.
"If you have done any research on the site or its tenant, this will be less expensive for you." Moving into negotiations for the time of everyone involved, Hek doesn't skip a beat.

"Pay." Dorian finally pipes up as he kills the cigarette in a nearby ashtray, exhaling the last drag and then looks back to the trio, nodding along with Hek's statement.

The Jay nods, then finally speaks. "The security company is listed, but it should be nothing significant. There should be no evidence left behind of this, otherwise the device would be found and this all would be pointless. The pay is 12.5 each. As far as the company inside, its going to be leased to three different companies when completed."

"The photos give the appearance of a construction project that will not be done for at least another month or two. Given the rate you're offering us, you are obviously in no hurry. Think you can wait at least a few days, let me survey the site and get a feel for how the crews move around the job site?" Everything that Hek says seems lifted out of a corporate site security handbook.
"As few as two or three days to observe could give us a real edge here." Otherwise fine with the payout amount, as he looks to Dorian for feedback on the extended timeline.
From afar, Hek has evil scheme for Johnson's device that requires a couple extra days. He could otherwise do it tonight.

"You have 48 hours."

"Well we have 48 hours it seems." Dorian replies to Hek as if he was about to agree with the man but gets slapped a time limit in his face.

The device is sealed, if you open it, you'd have to find a new case to put it back together, and anyone finding it would know. Its also possible opening it could damage it, since you can't tell whats inside due to the seal. It also does not seem to have an outgoing signal at the moment, you sumise its waiting to recieve a signal first, likely a specific RFID to turn it on to transmit. The range would be very short as well, only someone getting within 10 meters would be able to activate it.

«Plot» Hek says, "Next - Research the physical address and Mountain Guardian Security. Hek will work with his fixer contact, also the Surenos and Ramirez as all three might have had run ins with, or potentially know about the company. As you ask around, you find a bit of information, but not much simply because of who you are asking. Mountain Guardian Security is just another security company that works mostly on short term assignments. They don't have any single location the protect beyond thier own offices and assets. The guards are slightly above your donut eating security, but they aren't black ops teams. Just, well, average.

The building is being constructed by Pikes Construction Inc, they have a decient history of doing good work in the CAS sector, and are well known in Colorado Springs. This building is thier first in the FTZ, and they are eager to ensure everythign goes well. Hence, the security company.

«Plot» John Grimm says, "Declare any unusual gear. Building is in a A-B sector of the FTZ."
«Plot» Hek says, "XSG with APDS @ 9 conceal under the long coat"
«Plot» Dorian says, "Beretta 99SC APDS at Conceal 8 total."
«Plot» Dorian says, "Actually make that Hi-C"

The FTZ, the hub of Denver. The area of britest lights, but in those slim areas of shadows lie some of the darkest residents of Denver, living under the masks of normal society. The trip to the building is uneventful, and you can find a spot a few blocks in any direction. This area seems to have several buildings under construction, mostly remodels of historical buildings. Your target is at a corner lot, and has a perimeter fence of chain link and blue tarping behind it. There are multiple lights around the base of the building, but none on the higher levels.

«Plot» Hek says, "Checking for perimeter sensors and anything that would make going over the fence challenging."

Well, Dorian spots something, laser tripwires are effective, but in an area where wind and other disruptions can cause them to go out of focus, its likely they have a lot of false alarms and require recalibration. Once you circle the construction area, you can see that an alley on one side has a few larger dumpsters for all the construction materials. It might make a good springboard to leap over the fence…..as for getting out another method would have to be found, but then there are upper floors.

There is a single security trailer on site, with a camera pointed in all four directions outward from the trailer. Its positioned at the corner of the building so two sides are well covered. The other two sides would fall under street cameras and other nearby buildings.

"Pretty well setup." Hek suggests as he and Dorian go over the details of the site. "Do you know how to wire up the device?"

The north side of the building faces the street, and is within 10 meters of the sidewalk, with a drive up/drop off setting. The east side is the alley side. At the SE corner of the building is maintaince/dumpster area and the loading dock site. The south side of the building is a parking lot, not huge, likely limited to special execs, along with that SE corner loading dock. The west side is also street access, but closer to the street itself, no drive up access.

The Trailer is just a bit SE from the SE corner of the building, giving it a good view of the South and East side of the building.

"I am thinking that we can use the car, most likely on the west side, to get up over the fence. But only one of us can go. It would look too suspicious to just leave her parked there on the sidewalk." Hek takes a stab and forming a plan, running the suggestion by Dorian. "The other parks nearby. You have an encrypted comm, right?"

The building appears to be going to have 10 floors when complete. Currently at the top is a medium size crane.

"Basics, yeah. Nothing too fancy but more than enough for this kind of place." Dorian nods at that, he has a R4 Taccom with teh subvocal mic to boot. "I'm not too hot with electronics, I mean I get the basics but it could take me awhile and I might do a sloppy job. I know you're good with this type of shit though."

"It is going to be a bitch to get back out of there, over that fence." Hek actually seems to hesitate for a second.

"We can try locate a dumpster or something you can roll up from the inside up to there. Shit might be loud though." Dorian adds.
Dorian says "Wait.. What if we cut power to the security trailer right before you need to leave? Gives you that second you need to dart away from cameras."
"I doubt that they are running microphones. Takes special gear to filter out the background noise. Lots of motion around here." Hek states the obvious, that there is plenty of hustle and bustle in the FTZ.

Dorian nods to that. "Sensors can give off false alarms too, find the windy side and he might ignore it even if you trip it."
Dorian says "Hopefully that windy side ain't one he got a camera on."
"I have some, uh…" Hek hrms, searching for a way to explain things. "Dampening. It will help me mask whatever I have to move over to the fence."
Dorian says "Alright, we get you in west side. I park a little distance away and keep an eye on things. When you're ready we rendez vous wind side and leave casually."
"Sounds solid." Hek confirms.

"Need rope or anything?" Dorian asks. Some levels might be stair accessible afterall.
"Nah." Hek shakes his head. "The device is already going to be awkward enough. If it comes to that, you can pass it over the fence to me."

Dorian nods. "Alright let's go with that then."

The elf casually drives up and since it was getting late and construction areas were mostly deserted, it's easy to find an oppurtune time to roll the car up next to the Fence and set Hek up for a jump.
"Slide over. Take the wheel." Hek says a moment before he pulls the car out of traffic and up onto the sidewalk. By the time it stops a second a half later, he has opened the door. It closes, and he disappears.
Inside of the vehicle, Dorian can barely hear Hek's thick soled shoes on the roof of the vehicle. The vehicle's suspension absorbs his weight and barely shifts side to side as he leaps off of it…
…sort of straight at the layer of sensor strewn wire that has been melded to the top of the fence. Maybe a long overcoat was not the best choice of gear for the mission.

Fate, its a fickle thing. That jump was just a little off, the razorwire catches the edge of the longcoat, and turns his elegant leap into a tumble. The jump had good distance, and perhaps that was a problem. Due to mysterious things, there is no sound as Hek hits the ground and then slides into a wall of rebar…a single bar managing to penetrate his lower leg, tearing through about a half inch of skin.

«Plot» John Grimm says, "Hek takes a Moderate Physical Wound"
The device. Obviously the fault of the device. With the way Hek contorts his body to protect the tamper proof electronics case from being punctured, that is the only reason to explain how a master such as himself, could take a grazing puncture wound to the leg. Luckily for him, magic mutes the curses and winces of pain that occupy the next few seconds of his life. And then with those out of the way, he makes sure to locate and retrieve as much of the shredded fabric as he can. It's up to fate if anyone notices the blood, and bothers to think twice about it at a construction site rubble pile.

Hek is only mostly lying. The guy does not know drek about first aid, other than what the medkit in the trunk of his Americar tells him to do. But he is a man, out doing man shit to earn nuyen. And no way is he going to admit that he came unprepared to deal with failure. He works his t-shirt off from beneath his bodyarmor, rips it in a few bandages, and wraps them around his shin where the piece of metal managed to expose tendon and shin bone.
Commlink-TightFist> Hek sends, « That'd be wiz chummer. »

Dorian rummages through his rucksack and retrieves a liter bottle of Blud-B-Gone. Never leave home without it kids. He's going to exit the car briefly so that he can toss it over the fence towards Hek's general jumping direction. Who knows where he went after that.

Hek's night seems to be hanging onto a margin thinner than the laser beams that traverse the tops of the fence that nearly killed him. For some reason anticipating to come from his left, it appears to his right. A dark spot against the backdrop of the building across the street. The only thing that gets him to the chemicals in time are muscles cultivated in vats specifically for their twitch fibers.

«Auto-Judge[]» Dorian (#7753) uses 1 of item 6: Blud-B-Gone (1L) from Gear (#12165).
The best laid plans…
Hek finds himself working to douse twisted pieces of discarded construction scrap metal with the liquid that Scarface had the foresight to bring along. There are so many things that Hek still has to learn about running the shadows. Like how to get over a fence without nearly killing himself.
Not quite sure how much to use, he errs on the side of caution and empties the bottle all over the jagged piece of steel that sliced his shin open. Then with that taken care of, he makes his way into the partially constructed building. The stairs provide the most direct route to where he needs to go and he makes use of them. Thanks to the Johnson's briefing materials, the junction box is easy enough to find.
Having learned not to take anything for granted, Hek carefully examines the box, searching for any alarms or anti-tamper mechanisms.
«Plot» John Grimm says, "Roll electronics to detect alarms, then elec b/r to get the box open, elec to hook it up, and elec b/r to close it and appear all good. TN 6, then 4 on the rest"

Blud-B-Gone, your best friend while out on the job. Atleast that's what Scarface thinks, a bottle of that and your trusty Thunderbolt. But the latter couldn't exactly be brought along, which is a very good thing in this neighborhood. One shot of that, and you got drones heading your way pronto.

«Plot» John Grimm says, "Pose your results."
Finally in his element, Hek sets to work on what they have been paid to do. He lays out the electronics kit on the bare, unfinished cement floor. Going on what is practically instinct at this point, he utilizes a couple of probes and pry bars to pry the case open. A muttered curse is swallowed by the magical silence after he slices through the anti-tamper tape hidden inside the interior of the box.
With no choice but to go on, he positions the dataline tap alongside the power supply for the fiberoptics. Quite familiar with the interior of junction boxes, he splices the tap into the primary fiber trunk coming up from the ground floor. That done, he diverts power from the junction box's power supply for the cellular transmitter. Since he has not been given any instructions on what to do with it, he just uses the multi-meter to confirm that the device has power before buttoning everything back up, and paying special attention to try to line up the tape so that, visually at least, it appears unmolested.
With the device in place, all is still quiet. The wind blows a tumbleweed across the ground, wait…thats just a mess of barbed wire that was left behind. Now, how do our intrepid thieves get out of here, without alerting someone to thier passage.

Commlink-Scarface> Dorian sends, « That had huh? Alright, I'll go grab some pie and coffee at a dinner and bring some back. »
After communicating the bad news to Scarface, Hek hunkers down to wait for the sun to rise. As it turns out, he does not have to wait that long because the construction crew gets an early start at around 5:00am. A start that coincides with a shift change of the onsite security. Not wanting to try his luck, Hek allows the guards to rotate out and waits for the workers to arrive.
The security protocol is simple enough. A guard stands at the perimeter gate and scans the badges of the workers. It is during one of those exercises, when the guard is busy collecting badges from a three times occupied truck that Hek escapes under the cover of invisibility.

Scarface will be picking him with some promised coffee and pie, because well, why not right? Some comfort to enjoy while enjoying a rybar stabbed leg.
«Auto-Judge[]» Dorian (#7753) spends 50 nuyen for "So much coffee and pie, plus the leftover ot bring to Hek".

With the morning confusion and traffic, its definatly easier to slip out when invisible. Even if some mage was watching at a distance, the use of objects still assists in avoiding line of sight. A message sent to the jay, and your payment is left in a coffin for you to pickup, the code given to unlock.
